Want to quit smoking? A good tip is to find out exactly what triggers that craving and think about ways to change it into a positive routine.
These triggers are usually little daily habits – for example, having a coffee in the morning could spark the smoking urge. You can take this habit and add something positive to it instead, for example having coffee with breakfast, or having a coffee and going on a walk.
When you recognise your triggers, try writing them down and thinking about ways you can avoid or change those habits.
Kick the habit, smash your goals, and breathe easy.

It’s important to remember that you don’t have to go at it alone when you want to quit smoking!
Have a kōrero with your whānau and allow them to help you out, even if it’s just through small gestures and changes. They could help you by:
- Not offering you ci******es
- Giving you positive reinforcement and support
- Lending a hand if you get the urge to smoke at home, such as by helping you focus on something else like a game or video!
Part 3/3|For many of our clients, smoking was all around them, “Growing up I thought it was totally normal to smoke. My parents smoked, grandparents smoked, aunties, uncles, everyone around me smoked.”
In recognition of , we spoke to our clients about their quit journey, many of who are breaking generational habits and taking charge of their hauora ✅
“Taituara, taiwhare, taieke”: with backing, even the tallest of oceans waves can be conquered 🌊

You might think it’s hard to ignore that sudden craving for a ciggie – but it can be done! If you feel the urge to have a smoke, instead focus on the 4 D’s:
🕙Delay - Wait a few minutes, as the urge will often pass quickly.
😮💨 Deep breaths - Take a few long, slow breaths. It’ll help!
💧Drink water - Briefly hold it in your mouth to savour the taste.
🏃🏽♀️Do something else - You could watch a funny video for a bit, do some quick exercise, or have a healthy snack!
For many, having a cigarette feels like a mini escape from everything.
You can keep those 5-minute holidays but let’s turn it into something better for you!
How about giving some of these ideas a go?
Part 2/3| Giving up the ‘smokes’ is one of the best things you can do for your health – that’s no secret!

Give yourself a pay rise!
If you smoke a pack a day, that’s around $14,600 you could be spending on smoking alone.
Think about what that money could buy you:
- A holiday for you and your whānau
- School fees for your tamariki
- Building up your savings
- Money towards saving for a house or putting towards the mortgage
- Buying a car.
The options are endless!
PART 1/3
To celebrate and recognise Smokefree May, we had a kōrero with some of our clients to understand their quit journeys a bit better.
Their voices, experiences and vulnerability show us that there is no need to be whakamā (embarrassed) about where you’ve been, it’s about the journey and making positive steps to a better you.
If you want to give up the 'smokes', start your journey with us here https://readysteadyquit.org.nz/

To support you on your quit journey, we have a range of tools and techniques that are proven to help you quit smoking for good. One of these tools is Ni****ne Replacement Therapy (NRT).
NRT works by releasing therapeutic ni****ne into your bloodstream at much lower levels than in a cigarette, without the tar, carbon monoxide, and other harmful to***co smoke chemicals. This helps relieve your difficult cravings.
Over time you can reduce the NRT dose to eventually quit ni****ne altogether.
