Hope has Holiday Fun!

This Sunday (4th August) we are excited to start our new group specifically for the summer holidays, at the Eastside Community Hub!
“Hope has Holiday Fun” will be a breakfast meet up at 10.30 - 11.30am

There will be lots of yummy things to eat, hot and cold drinks and some crafts for the kids to do.
During the summer we want to stay connected with you all now that all our usual groups have paused for the school holidays, so we thought what better way to do this than get together for food, fun and a good old fashioned chin wag.
All are welcome, so invite your friends along. Can’t wait to see you! 😎☀️🥐⛱️

Last week I went swimming.

Nothing unusual in that.

I love swimming. I try to go a few times a week.

So, there I was, stood waiting for the leisure centre doors to open at the ‘magical’ hour of 7am!

We, (the hardy gaggle who turn up for that first session on the day) race through the turnstiles, into the changing rooms -to our favoured lockers and benches - then on into the pool.
However, this particular day, I started unpacking my bag which should have been crammed full of all my post swim essentials (shampoo, conditioner, brush, towels) only to notice, to the shock of my bleary eyes, that I had picked up my youngest child’s school bag – not my swimming bag at all!! I had a water bottle, some books and a ruler – but nothing that I actually needed!

Life has it’s ups and downs and sometimes we just don’t prepare ourselves well enough for these. Even if we do, (I had packed both mine, and my daughter’s bags, the night before but just chose the wrong one!) life can still get in the way!

As a community locally, many are still feeling the impact of the covid lockdowns and subsequent cost of living crisis which is something none of us were particularly ready for.

Some of us have prepared and planned well, and life has still got in the way – loss of relationships, redundancies, health problems or other issues.

If this is you today, then I want to remind you that it’s not just you. You aren’t the only one. But also, to say that if you need someone to talk to or some practical help that we are here.

Happy Tuesday everyone, love Bec xx

18/06/2024

Good morning Everyone.
I hope that you are all well on this early summer day.
I wanted to share something today that I saw during lockdown. It is something that
the NHS used for ‘wobble rooms’ – a place where staff could go when they needed
to get away from the pressure and strain that Covid brought. The signs on the walls
read -
“You are not alone. Kindness will get us through. Embrace the Challenge. Look after
each other. You are stronger than you think.”
It got me thinking what for us, is our ‘wobble room’?
And also...that it’s ok to have a wobble!
But remember..
You are not alone! We have a family in Hope Whitby and what a privilege that is!
Families love and look after each other. We have, and will, keep meeting, keep
checking on one another and keep being real and honest.
Kindness will get us through! Kindness. It’s a beautiful quality and feels so good to
show that to one another. But today I want to remind you that it’s also important to
be kind to yourselves. Take time out to rest. Relax and recharge.
Embrace the Challenge! Whatever your personal challenge is today – and this will
be so different for everyone, try to embrace it. See that not everything in life can
stay the same – and that the darker days will pass. But also, remember to talk to
those around you, those who love you and will support you through those difficult
times. We at Hope Whitby will listen to anyone who needs that listening ear.
Look after each other! We strive for unity when we look after each other, and we
have seen deepening of relationships through this. We are a Christian community
who loves and makes meaningful connections with each other.
You are stronger than you think! This has been the most beautiful thing over what has
been a very tough few years for us as a community building up after covid. We
have, as a community, seen courage, creativity and compassion. Our period
poverty campaign was launched in 2020, Beacons prayer has flourished, our
Malachi Storehouse Foodbank has been well placed to provide the community with
food and clothes. Hope Gives Hope (warm space) launched in 2022, and Hope
Does Holidays in 2023.
Be encouraged! In this season we continue to show love to a community we love. To
have deep and full conversations with one another. To journey deeper with our
God. A season where people have stepped up, tried new things, shared a phone
call with someone in need, taken a food hamper. A season where we have laughed
at trying new things. A season we have stood, cried, and laughed with each other.
A season when we have taken the time to realise how deeply we need one another
on this journey with God. This is a season to remember that we are not alone, that

kindness will get us through, that we embrace this challenge, that we look after
each other and that you are stronger than you think.
Thank you, Whitby, for your support of Hope Whitby.
If you are in need of food, support or friendship then please get in touch.

Hope Gives Hope – Hope Whitby 11/06/2024

It is a sad situation that in 2024 there is the need in Whitby for the services that we at Hope Whitby deliver, but the need is there, so we will help all we can.

‘Hope Gives Hope’ - our warm space at Penny Hedge, Whitby - has thrived. A new initiative started at the beginning of December ’22, it was always a gamble whether people would turn up, despite us knowing that they needed the help we could offer.

The numbers started around ten, steadily increasing to the teens, and then more recently hovering between twenty-five and thirty five on average each week (although there have been occasions when more have turned up!)

As is so often the case, what started as one thing, has grown to assist a further problem and has also benefited from other services seeing the ‘success’ and wanting to partner with us in providing additional services to the benefit of the people of Whitby. (So far, we have a social worker supporting the warm space initiative, The National Literacy Trust coming in to deliver book reading to the little ones, Ange Taylor from ‘Multiply North Yorkshire’ and help from the Credit Union. Whitby Fire Brigade also recently dropped by to give fire safety checks to anyone who needed.)

The main reason we set up ‘Hope Gives Hope’ was to be a warm space. A place people could come during the cold winter months and get free hot drinks, breakfast and food hampers/sanitary products, and I would say, that just over half the people there come for this.

This past year both families and individuals have been hit hard by growing inflation pushing up food prices. Basics such as meat, yoghurt and vegetables have almost doubled in cost along with rising prices of juice, chocolate, water, fish, cheese and ready meals.

For example, a bag of brown onions at one supermarket has gone from 64p to £1.24 while a brand of cottage cheese rose in price by 100.9%. (Sky News, May ’23.)

“Levels of food poverty among children having doubled in the year to January ‘23, the government must act urgently to ensure everyone can afford and access healthy essentials like fruit and vegetables.” (Sky News, May 16th ‘23.)

However, it soon became clear that for others the warm space acted as the only place in the week that they went. So, ‘Hope Gives Hope’ quickly became a twofold operation – providing food to those in need and supporting those in our town who are lonely.

Stuart Andrew, the UK’s minister for loneliness, recognising this issue nationally, has initiated the first ever cross government strategy to tackle loneliness in the UK. This report shows that loneliness is now being treated as a crisis that drives a range of health issues such as depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, dementia and even stroke. As Dr. Murthy writes, “Loneliness is far more than just a bad feeling – it harms both individual and societal health.”

The UK Campaign to End Loneliness and The Office of National Statistics state that the total number of people in the UK “often” or “always” lonely grew from 2.6million in 2020 to 3.3million in 2022.

We at Hope Whitby recognise the value in offering a place for people to belong, to build bonds in the community, and be supported.

Anyone is welcome, any week.

We can only run these services due to financial donations so if anyone is able to give, we are always happy to talk through where their money would go - back in to the community we all live in and love

Hope Gives Hope – Hope Whitby Serving the community is our passion at Hope Whitby, and during the winter months we started a ‘warm space’ to help people struggling with both heating costs and the ever-rising cost of living, as well as those who feel lonely.

What a fantastic time we had at "Hope Eats" and "HYP" today!
There were some lovely treats... especially Griselda's delicious scones and Jane's famous Victoria sponge!🍓🍰
Bec did a brilliant talk about Patience and God's timing, there was lots of time for a good chat, and then we all had great fun playing some games with the kids at "HYP". I think we'll all sleep well tonight after playing musical bumps, musical chairs and the Jelly bean game!! 🥵😴
Can't wait for next time. 💕
