It was our last Nia class for Whitchurch until September 5th this morning. Our usual beautiful venue the Gill Nethercott Centre was a Polling Station today so we went to my mum’s instead.

Thank you to Sue Brown and Sue Dorey for looking after us at the GNC and to the Whitchurch Silk Mill for our connecting coffee after class every Thursday.

See you in September!

A few more weeks dancing the magical routine Bloom. Celebrate the natural cycle of more light in February Thursday at 10 am at the The Gill Nethercott Centre. 🌱

Imagine your body unfolding like a sprouting seed, basking in more light and blossoming. At the end of class we rest as a seed again in the natural pause of Winter, taking time to feel safe and supported by the Earth, gathering energy for the next cycle.

The new Nia routine Cure is coming soon…

Why is Nia usually danced in bare feet? In fact why is it good to take your shoes off as often as possible? This is what Debbie Rosas the founder of the Nia Technique has to say…

Feet never lie.

They’re wonderfully forthright and let us know instantly if something is wrong.

Through direct contact with the floor, our feet send us spontaneous, accurate readouts on the efficiency and safety of our movements.

This is why I remove my shoes whenever possible.

What do I wear in a Nia class?
No special clothing is necessary, something stretchy and in layers that you can take off as you warm up and… bare feet.
If you wear shoes make sure they are clean and have soft non marking soles.

Next week we will mostly be wearing bunny ears celebrating the Chinese spring festival, 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit!

We often get asked... "Why do I have to take off my shoes in a Nia class?"

First of all, there are no "have to's" in Nia. While Nia is classically practiced barefoot, if you want to leave your shoes on, go for it!

For those who choose to kick off their shoes, we practice barefoot as a way to stay aware of sensation and connected to our bodies.

There are 7,000 nerve endings on the bottom of each foot.

Practicing barefoot stimulates a physical and psychological sensation of being grounded making you deeply aware of each step.

We danced Bloom in Nia class today at The Gill Nethercott Centre in Whitchurch.

Bloom tracks the cycle from seed to bossom back to seed. Smiling faces abounded as leaflets unfolded in warming sun as well as terrible glee when thorns developed on rebellious plants. Those images are making me chuckle still.

There’s room for more plants in the Nia garden whether you are a stubborn w**d, a showy blossom or a “common or garden” daisy.

I’m about to step into Brown belt, the next Nia teaching with Debbie Rosas the head honcho!
I found something brown to wear, I picked some nice smelling flowers and I battled with my printer to print the booklets.
I’m ready!

Our focus is RAW this week, listening with the whole body Relaxed, Alert and Waiting. We wait for new sounds in the music and notice how and where the sounds create sensations in the body. Flip WAR right over, really listen and Express any emotions and sensations that arise.

This week the focus of Nia class was the throat and we wore sky blue. 💙
Before that it was the Nia Winter Olympic spirit and I wore my hat and goggles! ⛷
Then there was the Chinese Year of the Tiger. We wore red and my bunches were my tiger ears. 🐯
We danced the same moves from the Nia routine Express (thank you Kelle Rae Oien and Debbie Rosas) but what a different energy each week!

02/12/2021

I was feeling off balance this morning. I felt nervous and twitchy. In Nia class I set the focus of “the feet” with the intention to feel more grounded.
We danced the routine Express (thank you Kelle Rae Oien and Debbie Rosas). During class a classmate mentioned the Wi******er Christmas market had been playing a Wombles song. That was it, for the rest of the class we had huge Womble feet! So much fun and undergrounding.
I couldn’t see any wombles outside the Gill Nethercott Centre, I did see ducks with their big feet.
My twitchiness has drifted off with the river Test that flows by the dance floor. I’m laughing and ready for fun. Off I go. Best foot forward.

Class was from Cornwall on Tuesday. We danced Dragon to the sound of waves crashing on the beach behind me.
It worked really well, thanks to Karen Burgess for the incredible backdrop and to Helen Church for the speaker. I still need a roadie and technician, I couldn’t get the sound of my classmates. They could hear each other so that was ok. What should I have pressed Susan Rees?

Feeling relaxed after the second holiday feeling focused class. 🏖Thank you to everyone for wearing their bright colours, hats and sunglasses. 😎
You can see the remnants of my tan on my face. Once I’ve had a nice bath I might see if I can get the orange makeup off my white bra!!

Zoom Nia classes on Fridays at 10am and Tuesdays at 6pm.

All being well, in-person Nia classes will start from the end of May. Thursdays at Whitchurch and Fridays at Micheldever at 10am. I will keep Zooming Tuesdays and Fridays.

10/03/2021

Tuesday night Nia took our bodies to a holiday feeling of fun, relaxation and ease.
I fixed my beach towel on my bookcase as a backdrop, slipped on my brightest top, retrieved my sunglasses from a dark drawer and fished out a cocktail umbrella from long lost supplies.

Who knew Zoom Nia classes would transport us on holiday? Where shall we go on Friday?

Tuesdays at 6pm
Fridays at 10am
£6

I’m looking forward to in person Nia classes starting again in May on Thursdays at the Gill Nethercott Centre in Whitchurch and Fridays at 10am at Roundwood. Tuesday nights will stay exclusively on Zoom so my friends from further a field can still dance together.

Dance for Pure Joy

I loved my Nia class with my Wi******er friends so much that when my teacher, Elisa Risquez, announced she was leaving I was devasted. She told me there was a Teacher training course in 2 weeks so I signed up. Less than a month later I was teaching my first class. Couch potato with one joyful hour of Nia a week to fitness instructor in one small leap! With the support of Elisa, my classmates and my instructor, Dorit Noble, I am loving teaching Nia 3 times a week. Come and join us for dancing, laughing and pure joy. (Non dancers and couch potatoes especially welcome.)
