The year 4s have started their swimming off this term with a fantastic effort. They have been learning to bilateral breathe (both sides) whilst swimming front crawl. At the end of the lesson, they learnt how to perform various streamlined jumps into the water. Well done to these children from Heron class for achieving the Star Swimmer award!

Joy Lane Community Swimming Pool News!

We are so lucky to have a wonderful swimming pool onsite and would like to share with you some of the activities the children have got up to in their lessons.

This week, keeping in with tradition on the last week before the holidays, the children have been taking part in various team games and activates followed by a fun swim. Lots of fun and splashes was had by all!

On Sunday 3rd April, Mr Ashley-Jones is running the London Landmarks Half Marathon in aid of the charity 'More than Words' that supports a wonderful pupil who attends Oyster Bay Nursery. You may remember that little Teddy walked 100 steps in October in support of of our Community Swimming Pool fundraising campaign and raised well over £ 3000 in the process; to date he is our biggest fundraiser!

So as a thank you to Teddy , he wants to do something special in return for the 'More than Words' charity who support him and his family. Teddy has an unknown genetic disorder and lower limb cerebral palsy so for him to walk his '100 'steps is an outstanding achievement!

Today we had a visit from the wonderful Nikki Spiller from Spiller Brooks Estate Agents who has donated £1000 to Teddy's fundraiser! Thank you to Nikki for this generous donation in support of Teddy and the JLPS swimming pool fundraising effort.

We are supporting community swimming pool fundraiser. For every chocolate brownie sold we will donate £1 to Joy lane. The community pool is used by over 800 children each week and has been part of the Whitstable community for over 38 years. The school needs to raise £30,000 to cover the cost of necessary repairs and improvements. If you know of any businesses/companies that could help in our mission to fundraise for the pool, please get in touch.

We are very fortunate to have a unique primary school resource here at JLPS, which over the years has been instrumental in helping literally thousands of our children learn to swim in a very safe and nurturing environment. Our swimming pool and qualified swim school instructors are fabulous, and we believe in sharing our facilities with our local community so that many families can benefit from this wonderful resource.

The pool is hugely popular and has been an instrumental part of the Whitstable Community for the last 38 years. However, while we are delighted to have and offer these facilities, the cost of maintaining and running the pool continues to rise. At the moment, we are subsidising this using school funding, but as school budgets continue to get ever tighter, we do not believe that in the longer term this is sustainable, especially after the pandemic, which has had such a chastening effect on us all.

The time has now come to mobilise the wonderful Joy Lane and Whitstable community to fundraise for further improvements and urgent repairs to our very special swimming pool. Our school is expanding, and in order to safeguard swimming for future generations here at Joy Lane, we all need to collaborate so that this school resource, which benefits the whole community, continues to thrive.
