Today marks the summer solstice, meaning it`s officially summer time! ☀️ But why is this important for our everyday work practices? 🤔

Well, the summer solstice means the longest day of the year, with the highest number of daylight hours (we can expect at least 16 hours of daylight in the UK). This means that the weather will keep getting hotter, and while all our projects involve working outdoors, we will be encountering extremes of heat as summer progresses.

The combination from the effects of physical work, heat, and loss of fluids and salt through sweating can be dangerous and can lead to heat exhaustion and sunburn. As such, here are some points to remember while working outdoors:
• Wear light weight clothing and cover up to prevent sunburn;
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, min 2l;
• Stay away from carbonated, alcohol and caffeine-based drinks;
• Take regular rest breaks in shaded areas;
• Wear sunblock with a high SPF (30+);
• Monitor your own and the health of your co-workers whilst working in the sun - inform your co-workers if you notice anyone becoming pink coloured skin;
• Wear tinted safety glasses to protect your eyes from glare;
• Try and schedule heavier works at cooler points of the day, e.g. at the start and at the end of the day.
