A Delectable Feast
We are honoured to be hosting Ruth Leigh on Sunday 22 September at 2pm for an afternoon of Jane Austen
Ruth has published several novels but this day will be a highly entertaining talk all about the characters in Pride and Prejudice.
In 2023, Ruth published the Jane Austen-inspired book A Great Deal of Ingenuity
The pages of Pride and Prejudice sparkle with household names. Proud Darcy and prejudiced Elizabeth, book-loving Mr Bennet, the snobbish Bingley sisters, predatory Mr Wickham and oily Mr Collins.
But what about all the other people busy cooking, mending, flirting, walking and socialising in the background?
In this entertaining collection of short stories, Ruth Leigh shines a light on the lives of nine characters from the novel. For instance, how is married life at Hunsford for Mr and Mrs Collins? Will mousy Maria Lucas ever find a husband? How does Sally the maid feel about mending Lydia’s worked muslin gown? Which Meryton matron will triumph in luring a respectable and marriageable young man into their parlour? These stories give the reader a window into the worlds of Meryton, Rosings Park, Pemberley and Hunsford as you’ve never seen them before.
Come and be entertained in the Long Room at Octavia Birthplace House and then enjoy a full afternoon tea made of dishes enjoyed by Jane Austen using recipes from the time. Menu to be published soon.
Tickets are £30pp which includes a delectable feast of cakes and tarts, refreshments as well as an entertaining talk.
Booking essential….follow the link below, do not miss out. It is rare that these events come our way so make the most of it on your doorstep! Book Now!

We had a lovely time making Patatas Bravas, Empanadas, Marinaded Steak with Salsa Verde, Ham and Cheese Croquetas, Chorizo and Prawns in Sherry, Albondigas and Basque Cheesecake to finish.
My job is not really work, I am so lucky to be able to cook alongside lovely people like these two and watch them share the delicious restaurant standard food at the end.
Well done! It was excellent and an absolute pleasure to work with you!
Thank you all who came to the pop up last night. It was great to link up again with Octavia Hill Birthplace House. We have been doing this for 9 years now!
Last night was Middle Eastern style food. A sharing platter of yoghurt, courgettes, tomato with harissa topped with whipped feta, dill, mint, parsley and toasted sesame, served with homemade flatbreads to start.
Followed by Chicken Tagine, Tabbouleh, Cauliflower with Pomegranate, Beans with Hazelnuts and Orange and Butternut Squash topped with Sriracha Yoghurt. A Walnut and Tahini Cake to finish.
A huge thanks to my helpers Pam, Sarah and Roger.
So many events coming up….follow us on Eventbrite so you don’t miss out and keep watching this page for links and information
