Today’s session included this logic puzzle from nRich and using the flakes to disguise simultaneous equations! 😀

Calculator Confidence and Compass Fun Workshop.

Is your child about to move into Year 7?

This workshop is to introduce your child to two new pieces of maths equipment that they will have little, or indeed no, experience of using.

Scientific calculators have so many functions and buttons that they can be overwhelming to use and the latest Casio calculator, recommended by most schools, is actually not very intuitive to use! With this in mind, I have designed a new workshop where we will get to know the key features and shortcuts for the calculators so your child can have a confident start in maths! The Casio FX-83GTCW comes in a few colours and I recommend NOT getting the grey version as some of the additional features are printed in yellow text and it's hard to read!

We will also learn how to use a compass for drawing by creating some fun and colourful art. There is an area of the maths curriculum known as "constructions" that requires careful use of drawing compasses and so many students, even my older ones, find them extremely difficult to use!

The session is 90 minutes long and will include a drink and a snack. It will also provide your child with the opportunity to chat about starting secondary school and if they are heading to Woking High, I will be able to answer lots of their questions and at least one of my sons will probably be there too - in-built mentoring! All for just £20 a student.

Loved using these number cards today. So bright and colourful!

Using two sets of 0-9, my Yr7 student worked out:
⭐️ how many square numbers could be made
⭐️ how many two-digit prime numbers could be made

Then we used the card for revising mean, mode, median and range.

Lots of maths but it feels playful using colourful cards! 🥳
