Here are 5 easy stretches you can try at home!

- Piriformis stretch - Can help prevent and alleviate general hip tightness

- Lumbar stretch - Can help lower back pain, improve mobility and range of motion

- Hip flexor stretch - Can help improve hip mobility and loosen tight muscles in the hip

- Trapezius stretch - Can help relieve tightness and pain in the upper back, neck, and shoulders

- Suboccipital stretch - Can help relieve pain and tightness in your neck, improve range of motion and help relieve tension headaches

The vagus nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). It helps to control things like swallowing, digesting, and good sleep 😴

High vagal tone is considered good & is important as it has been shown to improve:
- Gut motility (digestion)
- Digestive hormone release
- Growth
- Social development
- Less aversion to certain foods once weaning

Low vagal tone is considered not so good, with babies having symptoms such as:
- Irritability
- Colic
- Poor sleep

The biggest cause of low vagal tone is chronic stress on baby or Mother when pregnant.

Your baby seeing a chiropractor can help to increase vagal tone. Infant massage techniques to stimulate the vagus nerve are very effective. Having the TMJ (jaw) checked can also help as the vagus nerve travels through the jaw and can be impacted by dysfunction here.

Three reasons why this might be the case!

- Impact on joints - The repetitive impact of road running can stress the joints of your pelvis and spine, especially if your gait is incorrect. Over time this strain may lead to muscle imbalances and spinal misalignments, resulting in pain.

- Warm up & cool down - Without a proper warm up your muscles are left tight and susceptible to injury, to avoid this ensure you incorporate dynamic stretching into your pre run routine.

- Proper footwear - Investing in a well cushioned, ankle supporting running trainer should be a priority for any regular runner, in order to reduce the impact on your joints and remaining injury free.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently released their first ever guidelines for chronic low back pain (LBP) due to it now being the leading cause of disability globally.

1 in 13 people currently suffer with low back pain. This equates to 619 million people globally.

The managment guidelines advise non-surgical interventions including:

- Education programs
- Exercise programs
- Spinal manipulative therapy massage
- Cognitive behavioural therapy
- Medicines such as over-the-counter non-steroid anti-inflammatories

What does this mean for chiropractic?

Chiropractors are extremely well placed to provide most of these advised treatments! It’s great news for the profession and really promising for successful outcomes when visiting a chiropractor for those who suffer, or may in future suffer with chronic LBP.
