In June Nella and Nikki were at the Wolverhampton CFO Activity Hub; CFO programmes are part-funded by the European Social Fund. Nella and Nikki completed a week-long project exploring the topic of mental health awareness with service users currently under probation supervision.
Being a community project brought some different factors in to play such as scheduled events on the CFO Hubs time table, participants other commitments and the fact that this project itself was elective. However we were so thrilled to hear that those who participated on Monday’s session spoke to some of their peers in order to recruit them onto the project. We finished the week with 8 participants who had been involved since Tuesday.
The play followed a man's journey with his own mental health battles as he faces challenges that are very common for those who have had experience of the criminal justice system such as employment, accommodation and substance misuse used as a coping strategy. We wanted the play to have the overall theme of stories with a sub-theme of ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. The participants seemed to really resonate with this and stated that they have often felt prejudged due to past choices but also the way they present due to their mental health.
Our consequential thinking scenes explored how just being open to discussing mental health issues and being brave and seeking help when struggling can really inform our choices, ensure we are making the right ones and ultimately save lives. The participants stated that having the CFO Activity Hub as a safe space to go, engage in their community and gain support from others when struggling has really been a lifeline to them. This was evident from our discussions but also the participant’s engagement with the hub and staff.
We had 14 members of staff come to watch the performance with a mixture of senior members, support workers and coordinators. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and members of staff stated that they noticed so much growth in confidence and professionalism in the participants from how they see them day-to-day. The performance ended with the hub manager stating that he is going to send an email as soon as he leaves the room to ask for more projects.
We would like to extend a big thank you to the Wolverhampton CFO Activity Hub staff. They were incredibly welcoming, supportive and friendly. The passion and dedication they display on a daily basis is admirable and they made the week even more fun and meaningful than it already was!!
