The world-renowned Hollywood actress and model hit the big screen this month with her eponymously named movie ‘Barbie’.

Many of us experience pain or discomfort in our ears when travelling by plane. As you jet off on your holiday, the following might help to relieve the pressure in your ears:

- Have boiled sweets (or a bottle or soother for very young children) at the ready
- Take decongestants to minimise any build up of fluid caused by colds
- (Allergy sufferers) ensure you’ve taken your allergy medication
- Try using filtered ear plugs which are designed to slowly equalise the pressure against your ear drum

Being exposed to loud sounds for any length of time causes fatigue to the sensory hair cells inside our ears. This can cause temporary hearing loss or tinnitus. 👂

...It would have been the 77th birthday of this amazing lady today. The first woman to be honoured as one of Hollywood’s top stunt performers, and also given the title of the ‘Fastest woman in the world’ due to her speed racing records.

What you may not realise by looking at Kitty O’Neil, is that she had accomplished all this despite losing her hearing as a child.

O’Neil said “Deaf people can do anything” and she encouraged other deaf and hearing impaired people never to let hearing loss be an impediment to their lives.

Today is World Hearing Day.

World Hearing Day is a campaign by the Office of Prevention of Blindness and Deafness of the World Health Organization. It is recognised globally each year on 3rd March, regarding raising awareness surrounding hearing loss, and to promote ear and hearing care.

The intensity of sound is measured in decibel sound pressure level (dB SPL); sounds that are louder than 85 decibels can lead to noise-induced hearing loss. The legal UK noise limit for a firework display is 120 dB SPL.

Here are a few easy tips to help avoid damage to hearing:

- Keep a distance of 15-20 metres away from fireworks
- Children’s hearing is more vulnerable – so it’s best to keep them at least 50-60 metres away from fireworks
- Wear noise cancelling headphones
- Ear muffs will cancel out a lot of noise aswell as keeping small children’s ears warm, or ear plugs can be covered with a beany hat
