In today’s Through the Lens, we revisit Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leibovitz is one of the most influential portrait photographers of our time, known for her powerful and evocative images that have shaped the visual language of celebrity culture.
Born in 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut, her early exposure to travel and varied cultural experiences, thanks to her father's military career, laid the foundation for her later work. After studying painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, she found her true calling behind the camera and quickly rose to prominence in the 1970s as the chief photographer for Rolling Stone magazine, where her raw and intimate photographs captured the essence of a tumultuous era.
Leibovitz’s work is characterized by its ability to transform public figures into deeply human subjects, often blurring the lines between the private and public personas of her iconic sitters. Her portraits have a cinematic quality, often staged with elaborate lighting and careful attention to composition, creating a sense of narrative in each frame.
Whether photographing John Lennon just hours before his death or crafting elaborate, fantastical scenes for Vanity Fair, Leibovitz’s work has a singular ability to connect the viewer to the emotional depth of her subjects. This unique combination of vulnerability and grandeur has made her a sought-after photographer for both commercial and artistic projects, shaping her legacy as a storyteller through imagery.
Despite her commercial success, Leibovitz's work has also been marked by deeply personal projects, such as her documentation of the final years of her partner, Susan Sontag. These intimate images reveal the quieter, more reflective side of her artistry, proving her versatility beyond the world of celebrity portraiture.
Her fearless approach to both her subjects and her craft has earned her a place among the greats in photography history, making her a pivotal figure in modern visual culture.

Side note, I broke my finger when I was 15, can you tell which one? 😆

Today's "Through the Lens", we revisit the iconic Henri Cartier-Bresson
Often hailed as the father of modern photojournalism, was born on August 22, 1908, in Chanteloup-en-Brie, France. From a young age, he exhibited a profound curiosity for the arts, initially exploring painting before ultimately finding his true passion in photography.
It was during his travels in Africa in the 1930s that Cartier-Bresson first picked up a camera, and from that moment, he began to see the world through a lens that would forever alter the course of visual storytelling. Influenced by the Surrealist movement, he developed an eye for capturing the unexpected, the candid, and the fleeting, seeking out what he famously called "the decisive moment"—that split second when everything in the frame aligns perfectly, revealing a truth more profound than any posed portrait could convey.
As a founding member of Magnum Photos, Cartier-Bresson revolutionized the way the world perceived photojournalism. His approach was both unobtrusive and deeply intimate, allowing him to document some of the most significant historical events of the 20th century—from the liberation of Paris during World War II to the last days of Mahatma Gandhi. Yet, beyond these monumental moments, he also had an unparalleled gift for capturing the essence of everyday life.
His images, often rendered in stark black and white, transcend mere documentation; they are visual poetry, rich with layers of meaning and emotion, resonating with a timeless quality that speaks to the universality of the human experience.
Cartier-Bresson's legacy extends far beyond his own body of work; he fundamentally altered the trajectory of photography, inspiring generations of photographers to approach their craft with the same blend of technical precision and artistic intuition. He believed that the camera was an extension of the eye, a tool for seeing and understanding the world, not just recording it.
His ability to blend the art of photography with the reality of human experience remains unmatched, making him a towering figure in both the history of art and the evolution of visual culture.

Today we’re featuring the lovely work of John Starkey 😁
John is a seasoned photographer with an unwavering passion for capturing the world in high-contrast black and white. Armed with his trusty Sony 7c ii and Leica Q2, he has spent the past eighteen years exploring the art of street photography, developing a distinctive style he describes as “minimal street / fine-art street photography”.
His keen eye for composition and his ability to find beauty in the ordinary have earned him plenty of recognition, and a large following over on his IG.
Beyond his technical expertise, Starkey is a curious, adventurous and friendly spirit, and one of our favourite regulars (although we love you all). With a love for travel, he has explored countless corners of the globe, yet it is the vibrant energy of London that truly captivates him.
The South Bank and North Bank offer an endless source of inspiration for his photography, and he is often seen wandering their streets, camera in hand, seeking out the perfect shot. A connoisseur of both visual and botanical arts, Starkey’s days are often punctuated by the simple pleasure of a Sunday roast and an appreciation for the delicate beauty of bonsai and Japanese pottery (he has a pretty insane collection!).
At the youthful age of seventy, John continues to be a prolific and versatile photographer, effortlessly transitioning between street, landscape, and macro photography. His enthusiasm for his craft is infectious, and his work and attitude serves as an inspiration to photographers of all levels, even us experts 😉

Today’s TTL: NASA
This will be part one of four, each having a different focus, with the first looking outside of the solar system 😊
NASA's photography of celestial objects opens a window to the cosmos, revealing the mesmerizing beauty and complexity of our universe. Through the lenses of powerful telescopes, such as the Hubble Space Telescope, we are granted views of distant galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters with unparalleled clarity and detail.
Hubble, launched in 1990, orbits beyond Earth's atmosphere, capturing images free from the blurring effects of our planet’s atmosphere. Its contributions to space photography have been nothing short of revolutionary, showcasing the iconic and intricate structures of the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula, the swirling chaos of the Whirlpool Galaxy, and the breath-taking grandeur of the Andromeda Galaxy. Each photograph not only serves as a visual spectacle but also provides invaluable data for astronomers, enhancing our understanding of the universe.
Beyond Hubble, NASA employs a fleet of specialized telescopes to capture the vast diversity of cosmic phenomena. The James Webb Space Telescope, set to succeed Hubble, promises even deeper views into the universe’s history with its advanced infrared capabilities, which can pierce through cosmic dust clouds to unveil hidden star-forming regions and ancient galaxies.
The artistry of NASA’s space photography lies not only in the raw beauty of the images but also in the meticulous process of capturing and processing these distant wonders. Each photograph often comprises multiple exposures, stitched together to enhance detail and colour, revealing nuances that might otherwise be invisible to the human eye. The data collected from different wavelengths are then combined to produce composite images, where colours are assigned to various elements based on their energy levels, creating the vibrant, awe-inspiring visuals that have become synonymous with space exploration.
These images transcend scientific value, inspiring a sense of wonder and curiosity in people of all ages, and reminding us of our small yet significant place in the vast expanse of the cosmos.
It's absolutely mind-boggling to find a professional-grade DSLR from 2009, originally priced at a hefty £5000, now available for a mere £349.99! These cameras were built to last, and it's incredible how well they still hold up in terms of image quality.
This particular model is in exceptional condition too. There's no sign of wear and tear, with the rubber grips intact and no noticeable scratches. It's a real steal for anyone looking for a high-quality DSLR without breaking the bank.

Today’s TTL: Lewis Baltz
Lewis Baltz was an American photographer whose stark, unembellished images chronicled the changing landscape of suburban America in the latter half of the 20th century.
Born in Newport Beach, California, in 1945, Baltz grew up amidst the rapid post-war development that would later become the focal point of his work. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and Claremont Graduate School, where he honed his distinct minimalist style.
His early influences included the stark, geometric compositions of Edward Weston and the social critiques embedded in the works of Robert Frank and Walker Evans. However, it was his unique ability to marry these influences with a profound philosophical inquiry into the human condition that set him apart.
Baltz’s photography is best known for its engagement with the New Topographics movement of the 1970s, which sought to document the mundane and often overlooked aspects of the built environment. His seminal series, "The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California" (1974), depicted the anonymous, box-like structures of industrial parks with a clinical precision that challenged traditional notions of beauty and landscape photography.
Through his lens, he presented a world stripped of romanticism, emphasizing the alienation and environmental impact of suburban sprawl. His work forced viewers to confront the often-overlooked consequences of progress, urging a reconsideration of the relationship between humans and their environment.
Baltz's work can be seen as a meditation on the nature of space, anonymity, and the invisible forces shaping modern life. His photographs, characterized by their stark black-and-white tones and meticulous composition, evoke a sense of detachment and objectivity. Yet, this very detachment invites a deeper emotional and intellectual engagement, prompting questions about the cost of modernization and the loss of individuality in homogenized spaces.
Is it art, or is Derek just messing around by the river again? Maybe both.. 😄😉
Some recent photos from Derek, some for his current project on the River Severn, some not. Mostly shot on his Leica M240 & Zeiss 50mm f/2 Planar T*
