Post-War Fashion and the Artists of Today
Mrs Connie Gray
As the world emerged from WWII and Christian Dior introduced his revolutionary ‘New Look’ in 1947, fashion illustration became pivotal to the success of a fashion industry that had struggled to survive the war years in Europe. Drawn by the masters of fashion illustration, their art dominated the front covers and pages of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar with their gloriously chic interpretations of the latest looks from the haute couture houses of Paris and London. Traditionally considered to be commercial art, this genre of art is now understood to be part of a lost school of Fine Art. Through this fascinating talk, discover the most influential names in post war fashion illustration, their differing approaches to documenting fashion for the stylish reader and why these remarkable fashion artists were the trendsetters of their time.

Every year on 4 September, the canons of Worksop’s medieval Priory celebrated the summer feast of their patron Saint Cuthbert.
On 31 August and 1 September 2024, explore this rich history through a mixture of public talks, family activities, music, and worship.
The highlight will be an early morning, candlelit Matins service for Saint Cuthbert, performed as it might have been known some 700 years ago, around the time of Worksop’s famous Tickhill Psalter.
This ancient, meditative service will feature what is possibly the very oldest surviving English music. Composed around 930 AD for King Athelstan, in honour of Saint Cuthbert (above), these special liturgical chants will resound across the Priory for the first time in 500 years.

National Treasures - Saving the nation's art in the Second World War
Dr Caroline Shenton
This is the gripping and sometimes hilarious story of how a band of heroic curators and eccentric custodians saved Britain’s national heritage during our Darkest Hour. As Hitler’s forces gathered on the other side of the Channel to threaten these islands, men and women from London’s national museums, galleries and archives forged extraordinary plans to evacuate their collections to safety. Utilising country houses from Buckinghamshire to Cumbria, tube tunnels, Welsh mines and Wiltshire quarries, a dedicated team of unlikely heroes packed up their greatest treasures in a race against time during the sweltering summer of 1939, dispatching them throughout the country on a series of secret wartime adventures, retold in this talk.
