Blue Tounge Update

Due to confirmation of Blue Tounge on 2 new premises in Norfolk and Suffolk the temporary control zone has been revoked and replaced by a restricted zone covering Norfolk and Suffolk!

Please check the restriction here, before moving any ruminants or camelids!
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/66d22199bdecebe01a1833fe/RZ-declaration-Norfolk-Suffolk_20240830.pdf

Ruminants and Camelids cannot be moved out of the restriction zone without a special licence which must be applied for!

🐈 DECEASED CAT 🐈

Sadly we have had a domestic long haired tortie cat brought in to the practice. She was found deceased on Tuttles Lane West at the Barnham Broom Junction.

She is chipped but it’s unfortunately not registered. If you think she may be yours, please get in contact with the office.

‼️ BLUE TONGUE DISEASE ‼️

3 cases of Blue tounge have now been confirmed in the area and the Temporary Control Zone (TCZ) has been extended. Movement restrictions are in place for all ruminants including cattle, sheep and camelids.

https://defra.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=514ec88edec74575958d860f0196d2ea

There are 3 general licences now available for use. Please check carefully that they apply before making any movements.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/bluetongue-movement-licences-and-designated-slaughterhouses

Blue Tounge is a notifiable diease in the UK meaning that there is a legal obligation to report it to the APHA even if it is only suspected

Call 03000 200 301 if you’re in England

Blue Tounge is a virus spread by biting midges. We would like to highlight the importance of biosecuirty, fly repellent, reducing manure and standing water as much as possible.

We urge all our clients to remain vigilant. Signs to look for:

In sheep: Ulcers or sores in the mouth or nose, discharge from eyes or nose and drooling from the mouth, swelling of the lips, tongue, head, neck and coronary band

In Cattle: Lethargy, loss of appetite, redness of mouth, eyes, nose, skin above the hoof and teats, nasal discharge, fever and milk drop

‼️ ROAD CLOSURE‼️PLEASE SHARE ‼️

We have been informed today that Youngmans Road is going to be resurfaced tomorrow (Friday 9th August). This means it’s going to be closed in places temporarily, making it more tricky to get in to the practice.

Luckily we can be accessed 2 ways, either via the Barnham Broom Road or via the Wramplingham Road, so please make sure you leave plenty of time to get to your appointment incase you have to turn around and go another way to get to us. We would recommend leaving 15 minutes earlier than normal.

Please also be mindful that you may have to wait to leave the car park or wait to get into the car park depending where they are surfacing the road when you arrive or want to leave.

Please share this post with friends and family who are booked in with us tomorrow to pre warn them about this!

We apologise about the disruption this is likely to cause, but is out of our control!

Attached is a map showing Wood Farm in the centre of Youngmans Road. You are able to visualise both ways that we are accessible.

Last week we welcomed two new members of staff to our Wood Farm Family!

On Monday we welcomed Shannade to join the vets team. Fresh out of The Royal Veterinary College in London, she decided that she would like a job working with mixed species. She likes medicine and animals so decided that putting them both together would make her dream job. She clearly likes the puppy cuddles aswell!

On Thursday we then welcomed Liam to our nursing team. He enjoys the consulting part of his job and getting involved with x-rays. The reason he does his job is to maintain health and welfare. He joined the team to develop his nursing skills further a field with the mixed species nursing not just the small animal nursing.

Student nurse Kate has been practicing her bandaging skills in preparation for her mock practical exams next week! Some of you may recognise her patient as he normally hangs around the practice at Christmas time 🎄🐶

Roddy the Llama from Wymondham Alpacas & Llamas was brought to the practice to be castrated. Due to his size and strength he was given a short anaesthetic so his surgery could be carried out. He woke up feeling a bit worse for wear 🥴. But soon was back on his feet and able to walk back to his paddock with his mates!

🐴 RESPIRATORY DISCOMFORT IN HORSES 🐴

Depending on the time of the year the horses respiratory system is subject to different stresses including pollen, dust, mould and cold. Whilst tying to perform its vital function to supply oxygen to organs and muscles.

Identifying some factors that cause discomfort and providing long-term care to the horse or pony is the key to a long and healthy life.

It is important to remember that different pollens are present through out the year and thanks to Audevard they have produced a very handy calendar to make owners aware when different pollen counts are high in peak pollination.

Respiratory discomfort can be presented in many different ways but usually the main symptoms are;

🐴 Increased respiratory rate at rest

🐴 Coughing

🐴 Nasal discharge

🐴 Reluctance to work

🐴 Heave lines along the flanks

Audevard have two respiratory based supplements in their range for horses that need some help with managing the respiratory tract.

The Balsamic Control is a long lasting supplement for the lower respiratory tract in horses that are prone to respiratory flare ups and maybe need a long term support

Where as,

The Balsamic Air is a rapid relief supplement for the upper respiratory tract that may be needed in specific events like transportation or with a batch of poor quality hay. And can be used in the feed or be nebulised also.

See attached pollen calendar and the balsamic range flyer.

As always if you are concerned about your horses breathing and respiratory system, please contact the practice to arrange a visit from one of our vets who will be happy to help!

🐱 Meet Cilla…

Cilla will be looking for a loving home in the coming weeks so if any of our lovely clients can offer a home please do get in touch.

Cilla turned up at one of our nurses yard a few months ago with no microchip and no home. A few weeks later Cilla popped out 5 gorgeous little kittens, who have all hopefully got loving new homes to go to once ready to leave their mum.

Cilla is a lovely little cat who we estimate is only about a year old. She really deserves a loving home of her own.

Cilla will be neutered and tested for FeLV/FIV before going to a new home.

Today we have said a sad farewell to Ellis!

Ellis has been a part of the Wood Farm Team for several years. She spent a lot of time seeing practice and gaining experience when she was a student with Wood Farm. We are all going to miss her dearly, but wish her the best of luck for her new adventure. We are also sad to lose her sweet little side kick, Ivy!

💙NATIONAL RECEPTIONIST DAY💙

We take this opportunity to appreciate an important third of our Wood Farm Team, known as the Receptionists. They are at the end of the phone to answer your calls and queries and our front of house team to meet and greet all of you and your pets, amongst other duties and responsibilities their jobs entail. They don’t “just” answer the phone! Here are 3 members of the team, Sue, Fran and Emma. But we must also mention the rest of the team that weren’t working today! We have Jane, our head receptionist. Becky, Sharon, Jude and Libby, and not forgetting Michelle and Wendy who are our dispensing team!

07/05/2024

❗️EDITED TO SAY THAT ALL IS WORKING AGAIN ❗️

❗️❗️INTERNET AND PHONE LINES ❗️❗️

We still have no internet at the practice, meaning we have only one phone line. This is an issue with our whole road not just ourselves. This means all calls are being directed to one phone so please only call this for an emergency!

For any non urgent enquiries, prescription requests and routine appointments please email or message us on here.

Thank you for your understanding!

❗️📞 PHONE LINES 📞❗️

We unfortunately have no phone lines or internet signal here at the practice. We are trying to fix this as quickly as possible! If you have a true veterinary emergency please call the phone which has been redirected, but we do only have one line!

For any non urgent enquires, please send an email and we will pick these up when the WiFi is sorted!

Thank you
