Kirtan York

Goddesses of the Underworld.
One of our chants on Sunday will be about Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kahli and Innana: all goddesses of the underworld.
Here is the story of Demeter:

Demeter was the Greek goddess of the harvest, highly revered by the people of Ancient Greece, many of whom depended on farming for their food. She had a beloved daughter named Persephone, who was kind, beautiful, and shared her mother’s love of nature.

One day, as Persephone was wandering through a lovely meadow gathering flowers, the ground suddenly split open. Hades, the god of the Underworld, emerged from the chasm and captured her, wanting Persephone to be his wife. Imagine how Persephone must have felt!

Demeter, heartbroken by her daughter’s disappearance, missed her deeply. Her sorrow affected all of Greece, causing the harvests to fail, and stopping crops, fruits, and plants from growing. Desperate to reunite with her daughter, Demeter appealed to Zeus, king of the gods, to help her get Persephone back from Hades. Seeing the impact of Demeter’s sadness on Earth, Zeus agreed to assist.

Meanwhile, Hades wanted to ensure Persephone’s stay in the Underworld and offered her a special fruit, a pomegranate, knowing it would bind her there. Zeus then approached Hades, requesting that Persephone be allowed to return. Hades agreed, but only if Persephone hadn’t eaten any Underworld food. Unfortunately, Persephone had already eaten six pomegranate seeds.

A compromise was reached: Persephone would spend six months of the year in the Underworld—one month for each pomegranate seed—and the other six months with her mother on Earth. From that time on, whenever Persephone was with Demeter, Demeter’s joy would make crops, fruits, and plants flourish. But when Persephone returned to the Underworld, nature would go dormant, marking the beginning of winter.

The Wheel of the Year is turning into Autumn. Come give some gratitude to Mother Nature for the abundance of the harvest, have some autumn berry tea and sing some kirtan at Heslington Meeting Rooms this Sunday @ 5pm. Yesterday was International Women's Day: Apart from one lovely hour of beautiful kirtan with a group of women at KYRA in York, I worked, cooked, listened, rushed, shopped and tidied and went to bed at 10, exhausted. And tomorrow is Mother's Day?! If you, like me, are tired, overwhelmed by emotional labour and the to do list and need to return to yourself, come join me for 2 precious hours in supportive company to sing your heart open, shake off the heaviness of winter, connect with MA and be nourished. We all need a bit of that, I certainly do. Can't wait to sit with a lovely group and to sing together to MA @ Om Yoga Works Leeds tomorrow from 2 to 4pm
