From biscuits to tooth paste, this huge demand has led to enormous deforestation in Indonesia 🇮🇩. Plantation expansion has led to land encroachment & reports of violence in local communities. Also, orangutans & other species are endangered as a result.

What do these vegetables have to do with trees? Everything! Planting trees around fields protects crops from wind and wild animals. 🌬🌬🌬🌬🌬🌬🌬Trees also create a cooler microclimate, increase fertility and soil moisture and provide protection from the sun. Trees and veggies love each other. 🍉🌶🍅🍇🍆🍠🥕🌽🥝

Only 5000 chimpanzees remain in Uganda, and their habitat is shrinking due to a growing demand for charcoal and firewood. Chimpanzees are shy animals, but have been forced to leave the forest in search of food, creating conflicts with farmers. Together with the Jane Goodall Institute, plants tree corridors that connect remaining forests, so chimps can safely move between them.

You search the web with Ecosia 💻💻💻💻 Search ads generate income for Ecosia 💸💸💸💸 Ecosia uses this income to plant trees 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌿🌿🌿🌿🌲🌲🌲🌲Ecosia publishes their financial reports and tree planting receipts every month. All profits stay within the company and will eventually either be invested or used for tree planting 🌱

With summer teaching moving online, you may be asking yourself, why now?
1) The Uni will re-open eventually! When it does, will need us more than ever! (See previous post).
2) With all of us at home, we’re all on our devices. By downloading the Ecosia extension using the York link in the bio, you can help fight from home.

Ecosia is both environmentally and financially sustainable.

Their financial reports show that they have sizable reserves. Their tree fund allows them to pay all of their reforestation partners in 2020, just as they had planned.
But upcoming financial reports reveal that revenue for is dropping due to COVID-19.

The incoming recession means that fewer businesses will support Ecosia in the future. More than ever, their advertising partners (who fund tree-planting projects) need you to use Ecosia, and to spread the word about the tree-planting search engine.
🗣🗣🗣🗣🍃🍃🍃🍃 What do we reckon, can the help with this challenge?

Ecosia on Campus first started as an idea between three students in September 2018. Since then, student internet searches have financed the planting of over 135000 trees. 🌳🌳🌳🌳

There are now seven universities worldwide that have made Ecosia the primary search engine on campus - let’s make this happen at York! With almost 19000 students at York, a simple switch like this could have a big impact on the planet 🪐🪐🪐🪐
