This afternoon York Red Watch took part in a cross border RTC training exercise with our friends and colleagues at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

It is important for us to keep our skills up in this area, as well as work closely with other agencies.

This afternoon the York Firefighters have been out and about in the city centre engaging with the public and giving fire safety advice.

Today we attended a bin fire started by three disposable bbq’s. Please be careful when throwing away bbq’s and make sure they have fully cooled down before putting them in a bin.

We've recently been to a kitchen fire in a property. It's not known exactly how it started as no one was home at the time but you can reduce your chances of having a fire by:

- Turning off all appliances and your cooker when not at home
- Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob
- Double check the cooker, hob and grill are off when you've finished cooking
- Take care if you need to leave the kitchen whilst cooking, take pans off the heat or turn them down to avoid risk
- Never put anything metal in the microwave
- Always clean your oven and grill. A build up of fat and grease can ignite and cause a fire so be careful to keep these areas clean and grease free.
• Avoid cooking when you are tired or have been drinking alcohol because you won’t be alert to potential dangers.

Last month we attended a flat fire which started due to a cigarette not being fully extinguished before the occupier went to bed. Luckily no one was hurt and the internal doors in the flat were closed which protected the rest of the property.

If you smoke we suggest using a fireproof ashtray and putting some water in the bottom to ensure ci******es are fully extinguished. 🔥🚬

We are looking for passionate people to become On-call Firefighters at Huntington. An On-call firefighter is someone who responds to operational incidents from their work or home within a time frame of being alerted. The majority of our On-call Firefighters also work full or part time.

On 27th January between 10am-12noon we’re holding an On-call recruitment event at Huntington fire station where you can meet the team, ask questions and have a go.

Do you have working smoke alarms in your property? If you’re renting they should be provided by your landlord, as well as a carbon monoxide alarm if required. Find more info below 👇🏼

Do you live in rented accommodation? Has your landlord provided working smoke alarms on every floor? This is a requirement in all rented homes in England. But remember it’s up to you to test them regularly during your tenancy. gov.uk/firekills

It's Halloween tomorrow and we want to remind you to 🎃 Instead of tealights or candles in pumpkins try using battery operated candles, torches or fairy lights 🔦
If you're dressing up, make sure costumes are bought from reputable retailers and are CE marked. If the worse should happen and someone's clothes do catch fire remember to STOP, DROP and ROLL.

Over coming weeks, there are several events taking place where candles and fire play a big part 🔥

As always, we ask, if you can, use alternatives to the real thing.

But we understand this is not always possible, so want you to remember what to do if the worst was to happen ⬇️

York and Acomb crews were called to a car on its side this morning. They helped the driver out who was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Well the York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership have the answer.

Pop along to either Huntington, York or Acomb fire station on Monday, 23 October or Tuesday, 24 October.

The sessions take place between 3pm and 4pm and then again, between 7pm and 8pm on both days.

Bring your bike to be security marked using our ‘Dot Peen Marking Machine’ which offers a permanent, forgery proof mark.

Bike lights and reflective accessories will also be available.

If you get into trouble in the water then remember, float to live. Here's how:

1. Tilt your head back with ears submerged 👨‍🦰

2. Relax and try to breathe normally 💆‍♀️

3. Move your hands to help you stay afloat 👋

4. It's OK if your legs sink we all float differently 🦵

5. Spread your arms and legs to improve stability 💪🦵

To prevent chimney fires from happening, make sure you get your stove serviced, your chimney swept, store fuel away from your stove, and of course, never leave the fire unattended 🔥

Our friends over at Tadcaster Fire Station are having an open day next Saturday! Head down between 10am - 3pm to meet the crews and see the fire engines 🚒 👩🏻‍🚒

Next Saturday we will be hosting our open day at Tadcaster Fire Station, in support of The Firefighters Charity and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Please come along to meet the crews, have some fun and see the vehicles, including some specialist ones our friends from other stations are bringing along!

We had a great day talking to everyone about being safe in, and near the water yesterday. We had throw line practice in the water, learning CPR, and lots more fun activities.
