“The fear is that, if we withdraw winter fuel payments for those in fuel poverty, it will lead to excess deaths.”

“The concern that I and many colleagues have is that people will fall through the safety net."

While York Central's Labour MP agreed with the Conservatives and made lots of press appearances saying she would do anything to stop the vicious cuts to Winter Fuel Payments, it seems it was all talk.

Rachael Maskell abstained on Tuesday's vote rather than standing by her principles and voting against the cuts to crucial support for pensioners.

Nearly 13,000 pensioners in York Central were let down by Rachael Maskell this week. The Conservatives will not stop campaigning against this cruel decision by the Labour Government and will work tirelessly so pensioners are supported this winter.

11/09/2024

Another broken promise from the Labour MP for York Outer.

21,566 pensioners in York Outer will lose their Winter Fuel Allowance as energy bills are expected to rise 9% next month.

It is clear Luke Charters only works for the Labour whips and not his constituents.

10/09/2024

Luke Charters MP voted for tens of thousands of pensioners in York to lose their Winter Fuel Payment.

Rachael Maskell didn't have the courage of her convictions to vote against the Labour Government and chose to abstain despite warning pensioners will die this winter.

Labour is leaving pensioners out in the cold 10/09/2024

The lives of pensioners can be protected this winter but only if York's Labour MPs join the Conservatives who are voting against Keir Starmer's cruel proposals to cut Winter Fuel Payments for older people this year.

Rachael Maskell MP agrees with us and has warned pensioners will die because of the winter fuel payments cut.

Luke Charters on the other hand has been silent.

Conservative Group Leader on City of York Council Cllr Chris Steward has called upon Ms Maskell to have the courage of her convictions to vote against the Labour Government and convince her fellow MPs, like Mr Charters, to do the same.

This heartless proposal is already causing stress and worry for our city's older people and, if it goes ahead, could ultimately cost people's lives. We need to put an end to this today by telling our MPs to vote against the proposals.

If you agree with us, sign the petition below.

Labour is leaving pensioners out in the cold Labour has announced cuts to the Winter Fuel Payment, putting pensioners at risk financially.

09/09/2024

Labour plan to scrap Winter Fuel Payments for the majority of pensioners as energy bills are expected to rise by 9% in October.

This means over 35,000 pensioners in York could lose their fuel allowance this year.

Will Luke Charters stand up for his constituents in York or leave them in the cold and vote through another disastrous Labour policy?

Conservative Group Leader Cllr Chris Steward has hit out at Labour's decision to scrap plans to reopen Haxby Railway Station and called out York Outer's Labour MP for misleading voters during the general election campaign after declaring his support for the project over a dozen times.

After closing nearly one-hundred years ago, Haxby Railway Station was set to reopen after successful bids to the Conservative Government's Restoring Your Railway Fund. With this funding, detailed plans have been drawn up and City of York Council has purchased land on Towthorpe Lane. Then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visited the site in February to announce full funding for the station setting the goal of the first train stopping at Haxby by the end of 2025.

With the Restoring Your Railway Fund now scrapped, it is unlikely Haxby Railway Station will reopen with local Labour representatives remaining silent on their Government's decision.

Speaking after Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves' decision to scrap funding for Haxby Railway Station, Cllr Steward said:

"Once again, Labour has been caught out offering false promises to voters to get elected. Despite promising residents in the north of York dozens of time that this key project would be in safe hands if they were in government, it has taken them less than a month to scrap funding.

"What is even worse is local Labour leaders have not even had the decency to face voters and offer them an explanation. We are still to hear from the Labour Council, the York Outer MP and the Labour Mayor. Proof that residents in York have no real representation if a decision by the Labour Government is not in the best interests of our city.

"The Conservatives were ready to deliver Haxby Railway Station and had the funding in place. We will keep campaigning for Haxby Railway Station; as well as holding the new government to account as it is clear none of our city's MPs are willing to do so"

Ellis Holden has been selected as the Conservative Candidate in the coming Hull Road by election, which will take place on 4th July, the same day as the General Election. Ellis lives locally and also stood for the Conservative Party in last year’s Local Election.

Commenting Ellis said ‘I have been motivated to stand because I believe the current ruling Labour Group and before them the Lib Dems have been letting the city down. They really have behaved like two sides of the same coin with high council tax rises, outrageous increases to councillor allowances and all the time the roads deteriorate and are understandably one of the biggest complaints I here from residents. Housing is also a big issue for ward residents and the failure of Labour and Lib Dems to complete York’s Local Plan is costing the taxpayer every day in costs and also denying many residents a realistic chance to buy their own home. I also believe it is vital people stick to their word and yet Labour running the council has gone back on both their commitment to freeze council tax and slashed their free school meals for all primary pupils to a few pilot projects in certain very specific areas’.

Chris Steward, Leader of the Conservative Group on City of York council, said ‘It would be great to have Ellis on the council representing Hull Road. He has shown how passionate he is for his local community over recent years and I know would be a superb councillor across the city and in getting a fair deal for Hull Road ward’.

Great to have Conservative Party Chairman Richard Holden join us on the campaign trail in Rufforth yesterday.

Lots of voters do not trust Labour to deliver the dualling of the ring road when some in the Party say it is not a priority.

We know it is priority for residents and Julian Sturdy has secured £65million of funding to help deliver it.

A vote for the Conservative Party on July 4 is a vote to dual the ring road now!

PLANS TO DUAL THE RING ROAD APPROVED!

Conservatives in York have welcomed last night’s decision of City of York Council Planning Committee to approve the A1237’s dualling from around 200 metres west of the A19 junction to the Hopgrove roundabout. The decision was unanimous and assuming it is approved by the Secretary of State will see the biggest change in traffic in York in decades. As well as just over 5km of road dualling (in both directions), the plans will see two overbridges and six underpasses. The scheme will be part funded by City of York Council, part by the Combined Authority and the majority will come from the government, after years of lobbying from Julian Sturdy MP.

Cllr Martin Rowley, Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group said ‘Whether Julian Sturdy MP or us as the York Council Group we have long campaigned for the dualling of York’s Northern Ring Road and it is great to see it finally moving forward. Realistically the road should have been dualled when it was first built in the 1980s and we still wish to see the full stretch done, but this will be a huge reliever of congestion on the A1237 and should also reduce traffic in the city centre. It is great that government funding has finally enabled the road improvements to progress and this will be a vital boost to York’s economy.

Cllr Rowley continued ‘We are very aware that building and extending roads is only part of the transport solution and that much more must be done on Active Travel and encouraging walking, cycling and public transport. Like many, we feel the council side of Active Travel was not what it could have been on the dualling application and we will be pressing the council to go much further, whether an additional underpass on the Ring Road or in the much broader city transport issues’.
