A clip from the ceramics workshop from the previous post.
Time to take a look at ceramics! We visited Trisurya Keramik who make our incense holders (TK03-07). This was one of the biggest workshops we’ve visited and it was intriguing to watch the artisans at work - you can really see the concentration and focus in their faces. This is no surprise as you can see the skill and hard work that goes into creating these pieces!
After visiting the river barrier, we travelled to see the Sungai Watch team at HQ and their sorting facilities. It was brilliant to see where the non-organic and plastic waste collected from the rivers ends up. When the barriers are cleared, the waste is transported to the Sungai Watch facilities to be processed and sorted into different categories. The waste is then washed, shredded and prepared for up-cycling.
A highlight of our visit to Bali was seeing the river barrier that we donated money to Sungai Watch to build. We looked forward to seeing the barrier in action collecting all the waste (especially plastic) that has ended up in Bali’s rivers which would otherwise end up in the ocean. Our barrier has achieved so much! In the most recent report, between March and September 2022, 2,678kg of waste had been collected - fantastic! Additionally, our donation has created employment for people who build the barriers and who collect, sort and recycle the waste.
It was great to sit down with T**i Mertha and look at all the wonderful bamboo chimes she makes. There were certainly many new designs to choose from - watch this space!
We loved to hear how much our orders support T**i Mertha and her family. One of the most important and encouraging things that matters to us is to hear how our work with people like T**i Mertha makes a massive difference to artisans lives. A single order can go a long way for our suppliers and that means so much to us.
Ogoh-Ogoh parade! Next in Bali, we experienced the best of Balinese culture. Nyepi, also known as the day of silence, took place.
The day of silence is a 24 hour public holiday in which the people of Bali reflect, meditate and fast before the Hindu Balinese New Year. The entire island is frozen in time in solitude… people are to stay at home, limit their activity and be completely silent.
On the eve of Nyepi, we attended the Ogoh-Ogoh parade - all part of the public holiday. These statues (depicted as demons) are built specially for this event. Children and young adults carry the statues through the streets and finally burn them to ashes as a symbol of purification. We had so much fun!
We visited Wayan Sunarsa, our producer who makes the bug houses and Deddy Macrame, who makes our beautiful dreamcatchers and our macrame products. We were delighted to see our donation of equipment in action and hear that they have been very useful! ☺️

We had a bit of drama at HQ yesterday, a lucky escape even on a Monday morning. This is a press release of the loss of York's most photographed lamppost!! It's worth a little read..
"The manager of one of York’s most popular shops, Jeremy Piercy, was nearly killed this morning by a falling lamp post outside Shared Earth, knocked down by a passing lorry. The electricity box, in front of which he locks up his bicycle every day, was smashed open by the lamp post only 20 minutes before he arrived for work.
Jeremy started Shared Earth in 1986 as a small shop in Goodramgate. It moved to Minster Gates in 1991 and has now grown to the largest distributor of Fair Trade and eco products in the UK, with sales of nearly £4 million and increasing every year, as the public becomes more aware about the need to tackle climate change. Shared Earth supplies over 1,500 other retailers around the UK and expects to increase this further when it exhibits at the Natural & Organic Show in London next week, the biggest event of its kind in Europe.
York is of course a tourist city and Jeremy frequently shows passers by where he locks his bike – to an old ‘foot scraper’ which he believes is probably from the C18th. These were used when the streets were made of packed down earth, before stone or concrete was introduced. In those days, before cars, people travelled on foot or by horse; foot scrapers were essential at rainy times. Few are left now and Jeremy considers the one outside Shared Earth one of the ‘unsung heroes’ of tourist attractions"
It's very sad the lamppost is gone.. but we're hoping they'll restore it!

Vegan Wax melts!! Bam!
These beautiful wax melts are made from the more eco-friendly soy wax instead of paraffin wax like most commercial melts. Consequently, they're a lot more clean burning. They're made using essential oils so not only do you get the gorgeous smells but the added property benefits of the oils too. Inhaling orange essential oil is said to have a calming effect on your whole body. Wooohoo. Give me some of that!
We do these in 6 different scents. Each as beautiful and unique as the one before it. Highly recommend you add these to your organics range if you do not already sell them! Wax melts are a very fast growing market and their popularity grows each week.

Baskets.. if you love these and have been trying to buy them, you'll have seen they're sold out, much like a lot of our other ones. Don't panic, we are restocking them.
The reason they've been so popular is largely down to their incredible quality and beautiful style. That's not the only reason though, they're made in Bangladesh by artisans who are societies most marginalised. This includes women, people with disabilities and the indigenous local people ensuring work, stability and a raised standard of living; something we often take for granted. The winning combination of style and substance makes these baskets incredible sellers! Buying them literally changes lives.
If you want to know when they're back in stock, comment below and I'll update you when they're back!

We're doing something a bit different. We're finally exhibiting in the south!! You will find us at the 'natural & organic products Europe' fair at the Excel, London, stand G70! This is a new venture for us and one we hope will bring our products to a whole new audience as the range of sustainable products that we sell has undoubtedly grown a lot in recent years.
I'm going to post some teasers of some products we will be taking, starting with our biodegradable rice husk cups and natural jute bags!
Rice Husk Cups
Made from rice husk. Contains no melamine or other plastics and is BPA and toxin free, so nothing nasty to leach into your drink. Unlike all the bamboo cups we are aware of, this rice husk cup is genuinely biodegradable as it does not contain melamine which is a plastic. When you are ready to dispose of this cup, soak it in water overnight, crush and bury it in compost or soil. It will start to biodegrade in soil within six months.
Jute bags
Jute is the second most important vegetable fibre after cotton and is a light, soft, shiny plant fibre that can be spun into coarse, strong threads.
Jute is 100% bio-degradable and recyclable and thus environmentally friendly.
What do you think?

Those of you on our mailing list should be receiving your copy of the catalogue very soon, but if you're not and would like one, please contact our office directly, or send a message to us on any of our social media's (Facebook, Instagram or Twitter).

What has been your most consistent eco swap to date? What have you swapped that you've found it easy keeping up with?
Moving from shower gel and hand wash back to soap bars? Shampoo and conditioner bars instead of liquid bottles? Always using a reusable cup for your coffee on the go? A reusable straw? Maybe it's as simple as a lunchbox instead of foil or cling film? Or remembering a bag every time you leave the house just in case you buy something unexpected?
It's easy to think big and want to swap everything all in one go but the truth is, it's often too much and you end up overwhelmed and less likely to keep it up. Finding the easy swaps to start with make the journey easier and more successful in the long run.
Lucky for you, we stock all of these things and more..

"I got a lovely bunch of coconut... bowls!" 😂😂⠀
Our beautiful hand painted coconut bowls come in a range of designs. I really love this butterfly one. Butterflies represent a spiritual rebirth, a necessary transformation that brings hope and life. Something we all need. Now the world is opening up again and we're all breaking out of our chrysalis, we need hope that the world will be reborn and life will be better, or at least I do, which might be why when I look at this bowl, it just fills me with added happiness! ⠀
The great thing about coconut bowls are that they're a very sustainable product. Coconuts are used a lot in Balinese cooking, their shells would be considered waste elsewhere but instead they use them up to create these gorgeous products.
