Let’s squash this myth 🕵️
Dog breath isn’t always an ‘old dog thing’, which for many can be the assumed thing. Just like us, cats and dogs can experience dental issues that require attention.
Take a moment to assess your pet's breath. If it's less than pleasant, it could be a red flag for dental issues such as gum disease, plaque build up, or tooth decay.
If you’ve noticed any new dental symptoms in your pet, contact us today.

🛑 A Hutch is Not Enough 🛑
Rabbits need more than a small hutch to thrive🐇 Confining them to tight spaces is cruel and harmful. Here’s why:
🐰 Solitary Confinement: Rabbits need space to run, jump, stretch, dig, and forage, as well as a bonded mate for companionship.
🐰 Weather Exposure: Small hutches offer little protection from the elements, leaving rabbits vulnerable.
🐰 Room to Rear Up: Rabbits must be able to stand on their hind legs without touching the roof to avoid spinal issues.
Minimum Enclosure Size: At least 3m x 2m x 1m high—bigger is always better!

⭐️⭐️Lenny⭐️⭐️
Lenny the British short haired cat was in recently for castration and microchipping at our Copmanthorpe branch. Helen the nurse described him as lush and gorgeous..... we would have to agree 😍
From the 'boop button' nose to the ‘attention grabbers’ get ready to see your furry friend in a whole new light 😂
One cat, two personalities. Fiji belongs to Ellie, one of our vets. By day an aloof gent exploring outside, and by night a soft gentle boy who thrives from attention... not to say he won't give a nip when he's had enough 😅 Any other cats with multiple personas?
🐾🐾Staff updates🐾🐾
Sadly we have said goodbye to a few faces in the recent weeks and they will be missed by us and I am sure some of you 😔
Josie (Vet surgeon at Salisbury Road and Crockey Hill), Emily (Vet surgeon at Salisbury Road and Malton branch), Eve - maternity leave (Vet surgeon at Salisbury Road and Crockey Hill), Abi (RVN), Laura (RVN)
We welcome 🙋♀️:
Steph and Macey as our newest RVN recruits and Veronica and Amy as our newest Vet Surgeons and we also welcome Charlotte, Laura and Fiona (reception/admin).
They look forward to meeting you all in the near future.
🐾🐾 Norbet, Bryn and Ziggy🐾🐾
These 3 terrors were brought into York Emergency Vets last week.
After returning home, their owner had discovered that 4 Welsh cakes had been stolen/eaten (high raisin content). Problem being ..... which dog was responsible?
After each dog received an emetic drug, it turned out Norbert was definitely the main culprit 😂, but Bryn and Ziggy had definitely joined in the shenanigans also. 😈
We hope they have learnt there lesson, but sadly this is not always the case.

Anyone else ready for the weekend?
⭐️ Mabel ⭐️
Mabel was so excited to come in and see us especially, when the treat tin was involved 🍭🦴Here she is mid action shot ready to get her chop’s on that treat 🐶
Remember on these warm summer days 🌞... to make sure your dog is able to keep cool by:
Providing shade
Cooling aids (fans, mats, frozen treats)
Constant access to water
Limiting exercise
Holly here belongs to one of our vets Lucy, she has always enjoyed a sunbathing session, as long as there is some shade nearby. ☂️
⭐️ Shelli and Mable ⭐️
Meet these two gorgeous Staffie puppies 😍
Shelli (purple harness) and Mable (pink harness) are from the same litter and both came in for their 2nd vaccinations with Nurse Alice 💉
Just look at those little faces 🥹 They both have such similar facial markings but the opposite sides to each other 🥰
⭐⭐ Baz⭐⭐
Baz came in recently for a vaccine. According to the nurse administering it, he was a little shy/ reserved to start with, but with persuasion and gentle words, he came more out of his shell 🥰 Well done lovely boy 👏
⭐⭐Mary⭐⭐
Mary the Wire haired Dachshund puppy came in recently to our Willow Grove branch for her puppy vaccine and health check. She enjoyed chewing on the ear pieces of the stethoscope 😂🤢 I am sure she will become a firm favourite with the staff at Willow Grove 🥰
🥳🥳 CONGRATULATIONS🥳🥳
We are pleased to say that Lydia Waters passed her Veterinary Client Care Non-Clinical Skills Diploma: she can now use the post nominals DipNCS(VCC).This is a fantastic achievement and a lot of hard work to complete. Well done Lydia 👏🎉

(Keyhole/Lap Spay)
What is a laparoscopic spay and how does it work?
Traditionally, bi***es are neutered by opening the abdomen and removing the ovaries and uterus. With the development of keyhole surgery, we now offer the option of neutering using this less-invasive method. Instead of one longer incision, 3 small incisions are made in the abdomen to allow the insertion of the instruments and camera. Using these, the ovaries are removed.
What are the advantages of a lap spay vs an open spay?
Studies suggest a laparoscopic spay is 60% less painful for the patient
Recovery is usually complete in 2-3 days rather than 7-10
this can be beneficial to very active dogs
There is a reduced risk of wound complications such as infections and breakdowns
Is my dog a candidate for a lap spay?
Not all patients are suitable for keyhole spaying. This procedure can be offered to patients:
10-40kg: due to restrictions imposed by the size of the instruments.
Under 6 years old: patients older than this usually have uterus changes that mean the uterus should be removed along with the ovaries. Keyhole surgery can only remove the ovaries.
Ideal bodyweight: obesity makes visualising the organs very difficult.
No previous reproductive disease: uterus disease requires removal of the uterus.

❗️HELP NEEDED❗️
We have had a female brown and white cat brought into us this morning. No collar/ microchip. Found near Cornlands road, York. She is currently receiving treatment at our Salisbury road hospital. If you think this may be your pet, please call us on 01904 643997. Proof of ownership will be required.
⭐️⭐️Rosie⭐️⭐️
Rosie ate a piece of string the size of a mop handle. One of her family member had thought they had seen her chewing at it and realised the string was a lot shorter than it was! We attempted to induce vomiting knowing that it is not always successful in cats. Luckily it worked. Rosie went home after a half hour stay.
Please keep your eye on these pesky felines 👀
⭐⭐Max⭐⭐
Casually waiting for his turn to see the vet. He couldn't help but have a nosey out the window overlooking the car park 😂
Are you going on holiday? ☀️🏝
Is your dog going into boarding kennels? 🐶
Have you checked with your boarding kennels what their requirements are regarding Kennel cough vaccine?
The Kennel cough vaccine is recommended with most boarding kennels, but because it is a live vaccine the vaccine is recommended to be administered at least 2 weeks prior as they can be symptomatic with the vaccine.
💉💉Additional puppy vaccines💉💉
Chester visited recently for his third/additional Parvovirus vaccine.
This is now included in a puppies initial vaccination regime.
Sadly we have been seeing more and more Parvovirus cases within the area. This additional vaccine gives puppies that added protection against the virus.
Sometimes if their mother's maternal antibodies are present during the the initial vaccines, it can cause the vaccination not to work. (Does not stimulate an immune response).

Our Story
The Minster Veterinary Practice has been providing veterinary care to the pets of York for more than 100 years. Originally based in a converted townhouse in The Crescent, The Minster Veterinary Practice has expanded into one of York’s largest small animal practices.
The Minster Veterinary Practice has five branches at Crockey Hill, Willow Grove, Copmanthorpe and Haxby, and its main small animal hospital at Salisbury Road.
The Minster Veterinary Practice moved the main hospital to its current site at Salisbury Road in 1985. Originally poultry and equine were both treated at this site, but since 1998 Salisbury Road has been a dedicated small animal practice. In 2015, the Salisbury Road practice gained hospital status, the highest level of accreditation, from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
