🐍 The Celebration of Snakes 🐍

As part of our ongoing programming work with , join artist for an exclusive, hands-on family workshop inspired by the Sin exhibition.

What gave snakes such a bad name? In the Bible, a snake tempts Eve to sin in the Garden of Eden, but it seems strange to cast the snake as the most evil of living creatures when it is humans who are destroying the planet. We need to cultivate a better relationship with the non-human animals that surround us in order to maintain and preserve the eco-system of our planet.

This workshop will celebrate the figure of the snake. Participants will create hybrid human-snake figures using sculpture and collage, and build monuments to snakes with techniques used by Sarah Lucas (seen in the exhibition), and John Stezaker. Rosie asks participants to think about what snakes would say to humans if we could communicate, and make snake music.

Using a green screen, participants will then place their snake-selves and sculptures back in to the Garden of Eden.

Sssssssee you there!

We’re so pleased to be welcoming Senah Tuma to the Mediale team, as our Visual Arts & Heritage intern! ✨

Senah is a curator, workshop facilitator and aspiring producer. She studied History of Art at the University of York, where she first got involved with Mediale as a volunteer on our 2020 Festival. Senah is now pursuing her PhD, researching the emotional impact of exhibitions and designed environments.

Senah is interested in topics of representation, multimedia art, emotion and immersive narratives, especially the ways that narrative and emotion influence our connections to artworks, which she has explored through her own curation of exhibitions.

She is really looking forward to developing her skills with Mediale, and the team are so looking forward to supporting Senah and getting her involved in our upcoming projects! 🙌

We’re delighted to announce we're collaborating with York Art Gallery, to bring a dynamic public programme of cultural events and critical engagement to their 2022 exhibitions including Body Vessel Clay (OPEN NOW). 🎊

This public programme will drive deeper engagement and accessibility with the work, activating critical thinking around some of the urgent themes explored within each exhibition.

We last collaborated with York Art Gallery on the Human Nature exhibition for YM2020 and are delighted to be working with them to deliver a programme of events alongside their exhibitions, including family workshops, the Teenage Art School, and ‘After Hours’ openings.

Keep your eyes peeled for more info on those coming soon!

Immersive Assembly Vol.2: ‘Bodies & Gemometry’ got off to a bang this month with our cohort visiting York for a 2-Day intensive course of workshops, speakers and visits!

⭐️DAY 1:
We kicked off the course with trips to York Castle Museum & York Art Gallery to explore their collections and have a look at York’s history through the lens of the residency's theme (‘Bodies & Geometry’). We then headed to XR Stories at University of York for a keynote given by Kit Monkman and a showcase of Absent Sitter.

⭐️DAY 2:
We spent the day University of York for a workshop from Davy & Kristin McGuire (where the cohort got a sneak peak at their upcoming work) and a Blender Workshop from Antonio Roberts , where the cohort animated the objects they 3D scanned from York Castle Museum collection.

It was really wonderful to see our cohort get to meet in person and already begin to discuss potential ideas together.

And a big thank you to our partners:

We have had a complex but exciting journey with People We Love. Originally commissioned as part of the 2020 York Mediale festival, the installation then closed just three days after opening due to a national lockdown, before returning to York Minster last month. There’s now just one week left to see People We Love at York Minster. However, we’re delighted that it will be making its US premiere in Pittsburgh next year!

To celebrate this, today (and for today only) the faces filmed in Pittsburgh will be taking over the screens in York Minster.

In the year since its initial run, People We Love has taken on an even more affecting quality, allowing viewers to reflect on the past year, the loved ones that we have missed, and the ones we have lost. And we are delighted for it to find a new audience internationally.

In this image, John, a lecturer at the University of York, watches his sister Penny, who lives and was filmed in Pittsburgh, on the York Minster screens.

🎟 Entry to People We Love is free with entry to the Minster (also free for York Residents!) Find out more and book in our bio!
