It has been a busy four days at the Great Yorkshire Show. Despite the mixed bag of weather it has been great to see so many visitors and talk to them about the art of bonsai.

Whilst we are busy preparing for our next show - the Shrewsbury Flower Show 2024 on 9th & 10th August, we will be replenishing our stocks of bonsai trees and look forward to showing you round our new garden centre near York (Vertigrow).

We got GOLD! The Gold Medal has been awarded to the North of England Bonsai by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.

We are absolutely delighted that our display of bonsai trees have been awarded the Gold Medal at the Great Yorkshire Show 2024. This makes all the hard-work, commitment and dedication to the art of bonsai worth it.

It has been a lot of work getting our new garden centre near York (Vertigrow) ready for visitors.

Trying to lay hardcore and paving in unprecedented wet weather conditions whilst building external structures and transporting our stock over has been challenging to say the least, but we got there in the end!

We are delighted to be located at Vertigrow and look forward to welcoming visitors, old and new. Visits are by appointment only so do give us a ring to arrange before you set off to visit.

Our new garden centre is really easy to find, just follow your sat nav (YO32 9TL) making sure you turn off at Vertigrow which is just before the Highwayman Café. Once on site, just follow the arrows to find us – head down past the sheds and outbuildings and at the end, turn right. We look forward to welcoming you.

In the Autumn and Winter months we hold a series of workshops all focused around different aspects of caring for your bonsai, covering all the basics from re-potting to pruning and wiring to feeding. We are heading to Birmingham today to get ready for Gardeners World Live 2024.

It is no small feat getting our award-winning, mature bonsai trees show ready. It takes a lot of preparation, dedication and hard work in the lead up to any show, not to mention the transportation of the trees and creation of the display ready for judging.

If you are planning on visiting the show, it runs from Thursday 13th until Sunday 16th June. See you there!

Other considerations for choosing the right bonsai pot are the pot lip or rim, corners and feet.

A lip on the upper rim gives additional strength to a masculine tree, for example. Whereas, a bowl/convex side is more suited to feminine trees.The corners of a pot, whether sharp, right-angled corners, indented corners or rounded corners equally make a difference to the overall look you are trying to achieve, as does the feet of a pot.

Every bonsai tree is unique and a pot can be used to pick up on a feature of the tree. The colour in the tree that is complimented can be that of the bark, for instance, an unglazed red/brown pot picking up on the bark of a Juniper.
