Join RUKI in the forest to learn new skills, connect with nature and make new friends.
Join us at the beautiful Three Hagges Woodmeadow in Escrick, to learn different methods of preparing ink from natural materials such as alder, charcoal, berries and sun printing techniques. Enjoy a campfire lunch and create some beautiful artwork to take home. All materials provided!

We were very fortunate this week to meet one of the volunteers who was doing moth ID on the site where we run our holiday club. The woodmeadow is home to all these amazing creatures!
First week of holiday clubs has gone by in a flash - what an awesome bunch we've had join us in the woodmeadow this week! Thanks to everyone that came and made it so much fun.

Herb-Robert is found in shady spots in woodlands and grassland and the flowers change to a darker shade if they are exposed to more sunlight.
As well as medicinal uses, the leaves of Herb Robert can be used to make tea and the crushed leaves can be rubbed on the skin as an insect repellant

Honeysuckle is a really important source of nectar for pollinating insects and its fragrance is particularly strong at night time, making it attractive to pollinating moths.
It was once thought to bring good luck and protection from evil spirits. The wood of honeysuckle has also been used to make walking sticks.

Sweet Woodruff is an indicator of ancient woodlands. It is sometimes called sweet scented bedstraw and was thought to promote restful sleep when stuffed in your pillow. It likes to grow in the dappled shade of woodland understory.
This little visitor popped in to see our mud kitchen this morning! Think he's a common lizard🦎 What an amazingly diverse and interesting site we get to play in!
Usually found on the edges of woodland, it is a great source of food for long tongued bees which can reach inside the tube shaped flowers.
Kill or cure? Foxgloves produce a chemical called digitoxin which makes this a highly poisonous plant, but also a source of medication to treat heart problems.
The white or pink flowers of brambles are a favourite of pollinators like bumble bees. When the flowers are pollinated each of the female parts of the flower forms and individual 'drupelet' (blob) of the blackberry fruit.

According to folklore Elder is powerfully magical. Elderflowers appear from late May as clusters of tiny, white, fragrant flowers which can be infused in syrup to make cordial or dipped in batter and fried to make fritters. This term in forest school everyone learnt to identify elder trees by the shape of their leaves and flowers
