in 1902, Pierre Curie and Marie Skłodowska-Curie announced they had isolated a small quantity of — the first ever sample of this radioactive element naturally found in and in .

The Curies were experimenting with pitchblende, a common uranium-rich mineral ore. After extracting refined uranium from the mineral, they found that the remaining materials were still radioactive. To find out what it was, Marie dissolved, filtered, and repeatedly crystallized several tonnes of pitchblende between 1899 and 1902. This process eventually led to the isolation of one-tenth gram of radium.

In 1911, the Nobel Committee awarded Marie Skłodowska-Curie the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, recognizing her 'services to the advancement of chemistry by the discovery of the elements radium and polonium, by the isolation of radium and the study of the nature and compounds of this remarkable element.

Radium was once thought to have curative properties and was used as an additive in everyday products, but it was soon found to be too radioactive for daily use.

Today, it is a useful tool for treating certain types of bone cancer and is also a source of radiation sometimes used for industrial radiography, which is a technique used to test the quality of products and production processes in industry.
