📌 Location: Old Tbilisi.
🔍 Period: The church was initially built in the 6th and 7th centuries. Since then, it has been destroyed by foreign invaders and reconstructed several times. The current church is based on a 13th-century version, with some changes from the 17th to 19th centuries.
📜 History: Construction of the original church was begun by King Vakhtang Gorgasali in the late fifth century. During the period 570 to 580, this church was replaced by a church built under the Erismtavari of Kartli, Guaram Kurapalati. During an invasion by Arabs, this church was destroyed. In 1112, King David IV the Builder completely re-built the church, that became the basic design for the existing cathedral. During the attack by Mongols in 1226, the church was damaged again, with the destruction of the dome by Jalal Ed Din’s order. The church was restored by King Alexander I. During the next restoration, after Persian invasion, in 1657 the dome was replaced and a chapel to the south side of the church was added. In 1795, the Aga Makhmad Khan raided Tbilisi, during which the Sioni church was again damaged. This time the repairs included the replacement of the burned wooden iconostasis with one made of stone. During the nineteenth century significant changes were made to the interior of the church. Between 1850 and 1860, the Russian artist Gregory Gagarin painted a number of murals over existing, older Georgian frescos.

☑️ The Sioni Cathedral was the main Georgian Orthodox Cathedral and the seat of Catholicos-Patriarch until the Holy Trinity Cathedral was consecrated in 2004.
☑️ On April 12, 1802, Sioni cathedral became the scene of where the annexation of Georgia by the Russian Empire was announced.
☑️ Sioni Cathedral remained open during the Soviet period.

📜History: The fortress named Shuris Tsikhe (The Rival Fortress) was established in the 4th century as a Persian citadel. Most of the present walls were built in the 7th-8th centuries by the Arab emirs. It was considerably expanded in the 7th century and later in the 11th century, by king David the Builder. Most of extant fortifications date from the 16th and 17th centuries.
📝Etymology: From the times of The Mongols Shuris Tsikhe was renamed to "Narin Qala" (Little Fortress).
🗝 Interesting facts:
☑️ When the kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti became a part of the Russian Empire (1801), the complex of Narikala, mainly the Church of St. Nicholas, was used as a gunpowder warehouse, which exploded in a result of a strong thunderstorm in 1847. You can see the ruins of an old church at the basement of the new one, which was built in 1996-1997.
☑️ In 1827, parts of the fortress were damaged by an earthquake, as some historians say, authorities wanted to tear down the complex, but Griboyedov stood up for it.

📜 History: According to legend, it was the place, where the construction of Tbilisi was started. In the 5th century AD, when Mtskheta was the capital of Georgia, Vakhtang Gorgasali, king of Iberia, went out hunting with his royal falcon in the neighbourhood forests. The falcon allegedly caught a pheasant during the hunt, both birds fell into a nearby hot spring and were boiled there. Impressed by this unexpected discovery, the monarch decided to build a city and gave it the name Tbilisi (from Georgian “warm location’’) in reference to the numerous sulphureted hot springs. The district became a place of concentration of baths, built right on the sulfur springs. This is not just a historically important place,the baths are still working in the central part of Tbilisi and attract large number of tourists every year.
📝 Etymology: The name of the district combines two words: "Abano" - in translation from Georgian means "bathhouse" and "ubani" - "district".
🗝 Interesting facts:
☑️ This bathhouses were visited by Pushkin, Dumas and many other popular figures.
☑️ Each bath has its own name, for example, Irakliivska or Sumbatovskaya.
