EFANet joins the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) to CONDEMN the unfortunate Shooting Incident in Wellingara Primary School.

The shooting involved a grade 2 student who allegedly took a pistol to the school and shot his fellow classmate in the arm and currently receiving medical treatment.

Our schools should be a safe zone for learning for our children and teachers to foster productive learning.

Parents also have a role to play in ensuring that children are taught the right way to maintain the peace and stability in the schools by disciplining and teaching them to refrain from violence. Parents should be vigilant at all times to ensure that children are not taking any weapons or harmful objects to school.

EFANet partner and Member organizations, The Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (TANGO) and Action Aid International The Gambia (AAITG), ably represented by Mr. Ansumana Gassama and Mr. Buba Fadera also gave statements committing the government to action.

20/05/2024

The Speaker of the Children’s National Assembly, Honorable Lamin Jawo’s statement at the highlight event focused on on Calling the government to action in fulfilling their commitments at the TES.

Below is his statement!

Education is universally recognized as a fundamental human right and a powerful catalyst for individual empowerment and societal progress. As we gather here today to commemorate the Global Action Week for Education (GAWE) 2024, under the theme ”Invest in Public and Transformative Education, Education Transforms!”, it is imperative that we reflect on the transformative potential of education and redouble our efforts to ensure its accessibility and quality for all.

Transformative education goes beyond the mere transmission of knowledge; it seeks to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of agency among learners, empowering them to become active participants and agents of change in their communities. In The Gambia, as in many parts of the world, transformative education holds the key to addressing entrenched inequalities, promoting social cohesion, and driving sustainable development.

While significant progress has been made in expanding access to education in The Gambia, challenges persist. Limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and socio-economic barriers continue to hinder efforts to ensure quality education for all. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated existing disparities, highlighting the urgent need for concerted action to build back better and more resilient education systems.

However, amidst these challenges lie opportunities for innovation and transformation. The Gambia’s youthful population represents a demographic dividend that, if properly harnessed through education, can drive economic growth and social progress. By investing in education today, we are not only securing a brighter future for our children but also laying the foundations for sustainable development and prosperity for generations to come.

Central to advancing the transformative education agenda is the role of government leadership and commitment. Governments have a responsibility to prioritize education as a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of sustainable development. This entails:

1. *Investing Adequately in Education:* The Government must allocate sufficient resources to education, ensuring that schools are adequately equipped, teachers are well-trained and supported, and educational materials are accessible to all learners. Financial investment in education should be seen not as an expenditure but as an investment in human capital and national development.

2. *Promoting Inclusivity and Equity:* The Government must implement policies and initiatives that address disparities in access to education, particularly for marginalized and vulnerable groups, including girls, children with disabilities, and those living in rural areas. Inclusive education ensures that no child is left behind and that all have equal opportunities to realize their full potential.

3. *Fostering Innovation and Creativity:* The Government must embrace innovative approaches to teaching and learning that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. This requires curriculum reforms that are responsive to the needs of the 21st-century workforce, as well as investments in digital infrastructure and educational technology.

4. *Ensuring Accountability and Transparency:* The Government must establish mechanisms for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of education policies and programs. This includes ensuring transparency in the allocation and utilization of education funds, as well as meaningful engagement with civil society and other stakeholders in the education sector.

In a broader perspective, this campaign also calls for the protection of the rights of children in conflict affected areas, as we convene in this pivotal moment, we must not overlook the plight of the silent sufferers during strife, the foni cassamance crisis along the border for the past few years shows evidence of children witnessing the horrors of violence, the trauma of displacement and deprivation of educational opportunities, for a matter of fact these are things that no child deserves! The government should properly reintegrate and rehabilitate these children into society through education, vocational training and community support structures. And further employ diplomatic endeavours to foster lasting peace and protect the future of children.

In conclusion, advancing the transformative education agenda requires collective action and unwavering commitment from all stakeholders, particularly government leaders. As the Speaker of the Children’s National Assembly of The Gambia, I urge our government to heed the call to action and prioritize education as a fundamental pillar of national development.

By investing in education today, we are investing in the future of our children and the prosperity of our nation. Let us seize this moment to reaffirm our commitment to building a brighter, more inclusive, and sustainable future through transformative education.
