Gambia Federation of the Disabled is the umbrella body of all Organisations of Persons with Disabilities in The Gambia, that advocate for the rights, freedoms ,respect and dignity of persons with disabilities. The federation and all its affiliated membership, strongly condemns any form of discrimination against disabled employees in the workplace. We firmly believe that all individuals, regardless of their physical, mental abilities, and other impairments deserve equal opportunities and fair treatment in their professional lives.
Discrimination against persons with disability employees not only violates their basic human rights but also undermines the principles of diversity, inclusion, and equality that are essential for fostering a thriving and innovative work environment. It is crucial for organizations to recognize the immense value that PWD employees bring to the table and to create an inclusive culture that embraces diversity in all its forms.
Gambia Federation of the Disabled. firmly believes that organizations have a responsibility to create an inclusive workplace that fosters equal opportunities for all employees, regardless of their disabilities. To combat discrimination and promote inclusivity, we recommend the following actions:
1.Ministry of Health to immediately create conducive workplace for Ndey Fatou Njie to practice her profession with dignity and respect as any other employee.
2. Implementing Anti-Discrimination Laws: Organizations enforce Anti-Discrimination laws that explicitly prohibit discrimination based on disability. These laws should be communicated to all employees and enforced consistently.
3. Providing Reasonable Accommodations: Employers should ensure that PWD employees have access to reasonable accommodation that enable them to perform their duties effectively. This may involve making physical modifications, providing assistive technologies, or offering flexible work arrangements.
4. Promoting Disability Awareness and Sensitivity: Organizations should invest in disability awareness training programs for all employees to foster understanding and empathy towards PWDs. This can help dispel misconceptions and biases, creating a more inclusive work environment.
5. Encouraging Employee Resource Groups: Establishing employee resource groups focused on disability inclusion can provide a platform for PWD employees to share experiences, offer support, and advocate for change within the organization.
