🔍 Key Highlights: The 2024 report highlights the growing importance of cities in leading sustainable initiatives and underscores the need for collaborative efforts to achieve the SDGs by 2030. It offers a valuable benchmark for tracking sustainability efforts worldwide.

Greece’s Performance: Greece has shown some progress in several areas. According to the SDG Index, Greece ranks 29th out of 166 countries measured and is working towards impoving many of its indicators. However, challenges remain in areas such as Zero Hunger, Climate Action and Life Below Water, indicating many areas where further efforts are needed.

⁉ How do we measure how smart a city is?

The IMD Smart City Index 2023 draws on sourced data from the Global Data Lab's Human Development Index (HDI) at the city level, rather than relying on country-level statistics.

The Index looked into city living in 141 cities, casting its net much wider than in 2021 when the total was 118. In 2023, some 20,000 citizens were surveyed about living in their cities; they were asked which were the most urgent priorities, from affordable housing and road congestion to fulfilling employment and green spaces.

Zurich (also 1st in 2021 – the last time the Index was released) took the lead, with Oslo (2nd in 2021) coming in second, and Canberra (a new entrant to the Index) third.

Natural infrastructure and biodiverse ecosystems act as buffers to climate hazards, helping to regulate climate impacts and protect urban residents and infrastructure from their impacts.

🎯 The City Biodiversity Index is a self-assessment tool for cities to evaluate and monitor the progress of their biodiversity conservation efforts against their own individual baselines. The tool has been digitized by CitiesWithNature to promote and enable cities to undertake their monitoring and reporting on biodiversity and nature.

COP27 highlights the need for private sector action — PlanBe The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) highlights the need for private sector action to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis.

COP27: The world can’t wait.

From 6 to 18 November, Heads of State, ministers, and negotiators, along with climate activists, mayors, civil society representatives and CEOs are meeting in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for the largest annual gathering on climate action. The goal is to build on previous successes and pave the way for future ambition to effectively tackle the global challenge of climate change.

The 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP27 – builds on the outcomes of COP26 to deliver action on an array of issues critical to tackling the climate emergency – from urgently reducing greenhouse gas emissions, building resilience, and adapting to the inevitable impacts of climate change, to delivering on the commitments to finance climate action in developing countries.

Faced with a growing energy crisis, record greenhouse gas concentrations, and increasing extreme weather events, COP27 seeks renewed solidarity between countries, to deliver on the landmark Paris Agreement, for people and the planet.
