Συναντήσαμε την Κωνσταντίνα Νταλαγιάννη μια Κυριακή στο Ψυχικό, στο πλαίσιο του African Springfest 2024.

Η Κωνσταντίνα είναι μητέρα, δημιουργός, μα πάνω απ’όλα γυναίκα. Παρά το νεαρό της ηλικίας της, ταξιδεύει, μαθαίνει για το έθνικ κόσμημα στους διάφορους πολιτισμούς και βοηθά άλλες γυναίκες να δημιουργήσουν για να εξασφαλίσουν δικαιώματα στη ζωή, που για πολλούς είναι αυτονόητα.

Πρώτη φορά, βρέθηκε το 2017 με τον σύζυγό της Τζάστιν, στην γενέτειρά του, την Κένυα. Εκεί συνεργάστηκε με μικρές επιχειρήσεις που την προμηθεύουν με διακοσμητικά στοιχεία φτιαγμένα με αγάπη και σύμφωνα με τις τοπικές παραδοσιακές τεχνικές. Στοιχεία που αργότερα η ίδια μεταμορφώνει και διοχετεύει στην Ελληνική αγορά μέσω του brand της που ονομάζεται Sisalbee.

Το Uni.Versus ArtRoom υποστηρίζει το Sisalbee υπογραμμίζοντας τη σημασία συνεργειών που στοχεύουν στην υποστήριξη της τοπικής τέχνης και της δημιουργικότητας, καθώς και στην διατήρηση των παραδοσιακών χειροτεχνιών. Έτσι, καταφέρνουν να δημιουργήσουν μαζί έναν κύκλο αλληλεγγύης και αμοιβαίας ωφέλειας, προωθώντας την αειφορία και την κοινωνική ευημερία.

We had the pleasure of meeting Konstantina Ntaliani on a Sunday in Psychiko, during the African Springfest 2024.

Konstantina is not just a mother and a creator, but a woman with a passion for cultural exploration. Despite her youth, she embarks on journeys to learn about ethnic jewelry from diverse cultures, empowering women along the way to secure their rights in life.

In 2017, she ventured to Kenya, her husband Justin's homeland, for the first time. There, she collaborated with local small businesses, sourcing decorative elements crafted with love and traditional techniques. These elements were later transformed and introduced to the Greek market through her brand, Sisalbee.

The Uni.Versus ArtRoom stands in support of Sisalbee, underscoring the significance of partnerships that champion local artistry, creativity, and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship.

Together, they cultivate a cycle of solidarity and mutual benefit, championing sustainability and social well-being. Catherine says:
“The material itself is my principal source of inspiration. I choose it according to the location where I found it and its potential for expressing my preoccupations. The starting point of the Norwegian Landscape series is an artist residency in ÅLVIK, Norway. The shale I’ve selected to work with, came from the beach alongside the city where all the roofs were constructed with this material. The displacement of this matter from the mountains to the city and to the beach is for me an illustration of the effect of our actions on the transformation of a landscape. Touched by this impermanence, by jewellery, I tried to translate and immortalize my Norwegian fjords impressions.”

Sonia Beauchesne, Joaillière, Deschambault, Canada

Sonia says :
«FAIRE ÉCHO is a body of work linking three pieces of jewelry to organic elements found in three different locations in Quebec that are significant to the artist: Portneuf, Charlevoix and the Magdalen Islands. The connections made between the pieces are mostly formal, but also echo intimate moments of the artist's life from 2020 that are expressed in poetic statements in her artist’s book. These short texts come from writings that deal with anxiety and love upheavals that are in turn connected to writings reflecting on her childhood. The writings resonate with each other, as well as with the organic materials from around Quebec and the jewelry created from them. The different elements of this body of work all resonate and echo with each other.”

“Fluraichen is a collection that emerged out of the Covid 19 pandemic. In the first lockdown of the Covid 19 pandemic in March 2020. I found solace and joy in watching the natural world carrying on its seasonal changes despite time seeming to stand still. Looking out of the windows and onto the neighbor’s gardens I loved watching the changing colours and patterns of the flora and fauna as spring turned into summer. I have created these pieces as a tribute to those strange seasons.”

Today we focus on the work of their member:
Katia Martel, Senneterre-paroisse, Canada

Katia says :
"The pieces in the Monument series are part of a research project I am developing around the territories subject affected by human and industrial occupation. I have a particular focus on the traces and remnants left behind after the exploitation of mining resources in the regions near the place I live. The large pins with flat surfaces that define the series encapsulate both the allure and the impact I experience when encountering the monumental character of the sites visited for my research. Like the shockwaves endured by a landscape subjected to the exploitation of its natural resources, my interventions in modeling, casting, engraving, molding, and sculpting follow one another to create the concentric circular forms that define this series.
These artificial plains or points of human activity impact are surprisingly intriguing to explore for me. Each brooch represents a deeply personal interpretation of my visits to dozens of former mining sites, whether abandoned or now undergoing restoration".

Elena Moreno, Tarragona, Spain
After the initiation of the Industrial Revolution during the XVIII century, the impact of our societies on the environment has left a profound fingerprint on our planet. That signature led to the definition of the term ‘Anthropocene’, a new geological epoch characterized by the human's impact on Earth. Our world is our most precious object, and that is why I intend to raise awareness about the increasing destruction of the environment. If we live in a decadent world, it does not matter if we dress it as a gemstone as its impact will increase, and in the end, all that will be left as our legacy will be just plastic.

Gemma works on the theme of home. She "draws" her house using her unique techniques; She works from the floor plan, narrating - in each of the three pieces she presents- a different aspect of the spatial experience. The three main concepts are time, light, and coexistence - three ways to tell a story of everyday life; of a shared space; a rental place exposed to the market and the social changes. An experience of over 20 years, with all its fragility.

The «Hinterland Collective», named after the French term 'arrière-pays,' symbolizes the remote and often solitary paths these artists tread. Despite their geographical distances, they unite through their shared passion for contemporary jewelry, creating a powerful collective voice.

Gemma is a thread whisperer. She unites threads weaving stories, spaces and patience in a slow, humming way. Her works resemble nests, and it is this careful, step-by-step way of building little worlds that turns her pieces into wearable habitats for poetry to curl up and snuggle.

A note from Gemma:
“The focus will be on learning various weaving techniques that participants can apply to their creations. The goal is to culminate in a small exhibition showcasing samples, experiments, and sketches in natural colors, emphasizing technique.
Here is a list of possible materials and tools for a course on weaving and basketry:
1. Natural fibers such as cotton, linen, wool, jute, and bamboo
2. Rattan, willow, or other suitable basketry materials
3. Yarn in neutral colors like white, cream, beige, and gray
4. Fabric strips for rag weaving
5. Twine or cord for wrapping and finishing
We are going to provide some of the above.
Participants nevertheless, are encouraged to bring any additional materials or tools they wish to work with during the course. Basic tools recommended: pliers, saws, scissors, hand-drills, files, sandpaper, paper and pencils, glue, crochet hook, tapestry needles etc.
Materials should be preferably of natural color, so participants focus on technique”

About Gemma
She has studied Industrial Design at the Escola Massana (Barcelona). She has worked in different projects of design and props. In 2007 she began her jewelry studies with Jaime Diaz (Taller de Joyeria, Barcelona). In 2009 she worked with Kristin Hanson (New York). She has participated in several workshops with Stephano Marchetti, Silvia Walz, Judy McCaig, Stéphanie Barvié and Pilar Cotter. IN 2012 She studied “Design and technics for artistic jewelry and artistic, a specialization course of UAB, in Massana Permanent (Barcelona).
From 2012 to 2018 Gemma was part of the contemporary jewelry project "Joyas Sensacionales" coordinated by Silvia Walz (Taller Perill, Barcelona), with whom has exposed in: Instituto Cervantes (Schmuck 2015 München, Germany), Context Gallery (Sant Cugat) melting point (Valencia), Danger room (Barcelona), Labor in Chor (Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany) and Aram espai de joies (Palma de Mallorca).
From 2019 Gemma started different collaborations, exhibiting in AJW, Alliages, Cluster Craft and others.
