🌊 Case Study Spotlight: Grounding Incident of Vessel🌊
At Margetis Maritime, our dedication to maritime safety and operational excellence was rigorously tested during a bulk carrier's grounding in Sri Lanka. This case exemplifies our expert handling and comprehensive approach to maritime incidents.
🚢 Incident Overview: The vessel, loaded with a cargo of cement, was en route to Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. During her passage near Little Basses Reef on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, the vessel grounded, resulting in underwater hull damage along nearly the entire length of the vessel.
Our Piraeus head office quickly took immediate action, following meticulously all the received instructions.
🔍 Our Expert Response:
Immediate Mobilization: Upon receiving the incident report, our team in Piraeus immediately mobilized expert technical consultants to manage the situation. Swift action is critical in such scenarios, showcasing our preparedness and commitment to the vessel's safety.
On-Site Investigation: Detailed on-site investigation was necessary, as such an approach would allow us to gather crucial data, assess the extent of damage, and devise an efficient recovery plan. Ensuring we work with the most accurate information is always of utmost importance for us in order to maintain the quality of operations.
Collaborative Coordination: In close cooperation with local authorities and all relevant parties, we developed a comprehensive strategy to refloat the vessel and mitigate potential environmental impact. Effective communication and collaboration are fundamental to successfully managing maritime incidents.
This incident highlights the importance of proactive preparedness and the role of advanced navigational technologies in reducing risks. Protecting the marine environment remains a priority so, our response always includes measures to prevent and minimize environmental damage.
At Margetis Maritime, every challenge is an opportunity to demonstrate our expertise and improve our practices. The grounding of the vessel reaffirmed our commitment to maritime safety, innovation, and environmental stewardship. Our Dubai Office can now undertake Bunker Quantity Surveys, providing professional quantity inspection services in Fujairah, Dubai, and all other U.A.E Ports.
As bunker fuel is often the largest contributor to the operational costs of a ship, it is critical that the fuel purchaser ensures the correct amount of fuel is received or has sufficient information to substantiate their claim in the event of any dispute.
As bunkering operations often take place some distance from the fuel purchaser’s office, it is in their interest to engage a surveyor to verify the quantity delivered and oversee fuel sampling for laboratory analysis.
Responding to these concerns, Margetis Maritime offers impartial and independent bunker quantity surveys (BQS) through our network of offices and laboratories.
For inquiries regarding further information on Bunker Quantity Surveys, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected]

bans toxic paint substance "Cybutryne" in antifouling systems from 1-1-2023
The resolution MEPC. 331 (76) adopted on 17 June 2021 and entering into force on 1-1-2023, sets new controls on paint substance amending also a model form of the Anti-fouling system certificate.
The prohibit the application or re-application of anti-fouling systems containing Cybutryne (CAS No. 28159-98-0) on all ships from 1 January 2023.
Moreover, all ships should remove or seal such anti-fouling systems at the next scheduled renewal of the anti-fouling system after 1 January 2023, but no later than 60 months following the last application of such anti-fouling system prior to 1 January 2023.
The requirement to remove or seal does not apply to:
1. fixed and floating platforms, , and constructed prior to 1 January 2023 and not dry-docked on or after that date;
2. ships not engaged in international voyages; and
3. ships of less than 400 GT engaged in international voyages, if accepted by the coastal State.
Ships in operation will need to comply with the requirement within the first anti-fouling renewal after 1 January 2023 and will be issued a new International AFS certificate which includes cybutryne-free compliance.
Ships under construction, which will be delivered after 1 January 2023, will need to be delivered as both TBT and cybutryne-free, and will be issued with an AFS certificate at the initial survey.
Therefore, shipping companies should not forget to obtain the “cybutryne-free statements” from the manufacturers in order to be furnished with an AFS certificate.
For more information regarding the new requirements, check Annex I & Annex 4 of the 2001 AFS Convention or MEPC. 331 (76) on this link:https://margetis.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/MEPC-331-76.pdf

New IMO “IP CODE” Adopted – Entry into force on 1 JULY 2024
A new mandatory safety code for ships carrying industrial personnel – aimed at ensuring the safety of people transported to work on offshore facilities including windfarms – has been adopted by International Maritime Organization's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 106), which met 2-11 November 2022.
The draft MSC Resolution Adoption of the International Code of Safety for Ships Carrying Industrial Personnel (IP Code) can be found here:https://margetis.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/MSC-106-3-1-Adoption-of-the-International-Code-of-Safety-for-Ships-Carrying-Industrial-PersonnelIP-Co...-Secretariat.pdf
The aim is to provide minimum safety standards for ships that carry industrial personnel, as well as for the personnel themselves, and address specific risks of maritime operations within the offshore and energy sectors, such as personnel transfer operations. Such personnel may be engaged in the construction, maintenance, decommissioning, operation or servicing of offshore facilities, such as windfarms, as well as offshore oil and gas installations, aquaculture, ocean mining or similar activities.
All ships to which the IP Code applies shall (prior to the carriage of more than 12 industrial personnel on board) have on board an Industrial Personnel Safety Certificate, from the entry-into- force date.
The amendments and Code are expected to enter into force on 1 July 2024. The IP Code will intentionally fill and clarify the regulatory gap between SOLAS cargo ships and SOLAS passenger ships.
