Andy Hoffman: “It is time to take management research to the next level. That requires challenging the outdated research culture and norms that dominate business school scholarship.” Among his recommendations:

- We must explore changes to the shape and structure of the current models of shareholder primacy, unfettered global trade and laissez faire government policies that have been in place since the 1980s.
- Research theories must now treat economic systems as intertwined with the primacy of natural systems.
- Research should explore such questions as: the purpose of the firm; the relationship between the market and the government; whether we can address climate change in an economy based on unlimited economic growth and unbridled consumption; and whether we can bring about a just and orderly end to the fossil-fuel sector.
- We must challenge the current research norms and culture by exploring what metrics will reflect environmental and social impact, not just scholarly impact.
- We must look beyond narrow human utility and ask how to address the widening climate divide between the poorest people, who are least responsible for climate change but most at risk, and the most affluent, who are most to blame and have the resources to adapt to its effects.

Under the supervision of the Director of MarLab, Professor Rodoula Tsiotsou, the volunteers of the Marketing Laboratory MARLAB, doctoral student Smaragda Samara, and undergraduate students Chrysoula Doulala, Athanasia-Sotiria Zafeiri, Andromachi Koroniadou and Nefeli-Maria Simou, presented the paper titled "APIVITA: SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION" at the "XV International Congress on Teaching Cases Related on Public And Nonprofit Marketing" (https://responsibility-sustainability.org/index.php/R-S/announcement/view/14) Lima, Peru.

The digital world is a universe in its own right and a very fast-moving one at that. Myriads of downloads and uploads, posts and searches, messages sent and received, listens and streams happen every minute on the world wide web.

According to data compiled by Lori Lewis and published on the site AllAccess, 60 seconds on the web in 2021 consist of more than 500 hours of content uploaded on YouTube, 695,000 stories shared on Instagram and nearly 70 million messages sent via WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. That same internet minute also contains more than two million swipes on Tinder as well as an incredible 1.6 million U.S. dollars spent online.

IT IS SAD THAT HEALTH, A HUMAN RIGHT, IS BECOMING A LUCRATIVE FOR PROFIT BUSINESS!

Healthcare can be a very lucrative business, and while as citizens we may view hospitals as a public amenity, the reality in many countries is that they are also a business, and are run for profit as well as for the good of society. As data from the Statista Health Market Outlook shows, nowhere is this done more effectively than in North America.

As defined by Statista: "This industry includes hospitals such as general hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, and specialist hospitals, which provide various services to inpatients, ranging from diagnostics to medical treatments and surgical treatments to nursing and specialized accommodation to other medical services. Long-term care facilities, ambulatory care providers, and medical retailers are excluded from the estimates."

In 2022, the average hospital in North America generated an estimated $116.4m in revenue - far ahead of all other regions. Australia & Oceania, as well as Europe came the closest with $44.9m and $37.6m respectively. Africa, on the other end of the scale had the average hospital turnover at just $1.7m.

BIG Tech, Big Fines GDPR BREACHES

Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) has decided to fine Instagram 405 million Euro or $402 million for violating the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by incorrectly handling data of children active on the platform. Instagram's parent company Meta has already announced to appeal the decision. Even though it might seem like a considerable sum, it's not the most significant amount of money a company had to pay in the history of the GDPR.

As our chart shows, that questionable honor goes to Amazon, another member of GAFAM. In July of 2021, Luxembourg's data watchdog issued the European branch of the multi-billion dollar tech firm a fine of roughly $740 million in current prices for the "non-compliance with general data processing principles" according to the GDPR Enforcement Tracker by CMS Law. The third place on the list of highest fines goes to WhatsApp, followed by three counts of Google violating the GDPR, Facebook and Swedish fashion company H&M.

The regulatory framework of the GDPR aims to give users more control over their data – and lays the groundwork for fining companies offering their services in the EU for breaching its articles. The GDPR was instated on May 25th, 2018 as a replacement for the EU's Data Protection Directive from 1995, encompassing 99 articles. So far, the GDPR Enforcement Tracker lists 1,372 individual breaches of the GDPR, although the data is most likely incomplete since not all fines are made public.
