🌟 Student Spotlight: Karen's Experience at Ixchel Spanish School 🌟

We're excited to share Karen's incredible journey at Ixchel! She and her husband joined us for a week of personalized, one-on-one instruction, hear what Karen has to say about her personalized Spanish immersion:

"My experience at Ixchel Spanish School was EXACTLY what I was looking for! My husband and I signed up for four-hours a day of one-on-one instruction for a week. It was the perfect amount of instruction for someone like me, with basic Spanish skills from my time using Duolingo! My teacher, Angelica, was amazing! We spent the first 2 hours each day conversing in Spanish, stopping periodically to review certain vocabulary words and grammar rules. After a short break, we spent the next two hours focusing on grammar (verbs, conjugation, articles, prepositions, common phrases, etc.) Angelica knew exactly how to customize the material so we focused on my weaker areas. Each instructor has a different approach and although I didn't need to, I know that another student easily switched instructors after the first day to find someone who was a better fit. The school was so accommodating. They are so invested in making sure the students have a good experience.

Now for the accommodations. The school offers several accommodation options, but my husband and I opted to stay in a double room on-site. We chose this to immerse ourselves in the program and connect with other students. This worked out perfectly not only for the convenience and the three daily meals (thank you, Dina, for your home-cooked meals!), but because it allowed us to engage with the school staff and other students outside of school hours. During school each of us were busy with our instruction, but once classes were done, we'd often run into each other around the school, working on homework and it gave us a chance to interact (in Spanish, of course - well, most of the time anyway!) We were able to catch up with each other at meal time as well. Speaking of which, the homecooked meals were great! There was always a good variety. I don't think we ate the same twice during the week. And, the portions are huge - you won't go hungry!

Over the course of just one week, we got to know several other students of varying ages and backgrounds, each with their own story. Even though we have each moved on to other travels, or have returned to our day-to-day lives, we continue to keep in touch. Having this shared experience is something that we'll carry with us throughout our journey and we have Ixchel to thank for that!" - Karen Thiruvalam
