Newsflash reported in the NYTimes today: "The daughter of Efrain Rios Montt, the former dictator facing charges of genocide for massacres committed during his 1982-83 regime, is running for president of Guatemala. She was 14 years old when her father, an army general, seized power in a coup. The regime he led suspended the constitution and launched a brutal campaign against political dissidents.
Rios Montt's brief military regime was one of the bloodiest periods of Guatemala's civil war. According to the United Nations, about 245,000 people were killed or disappeared during the 1960-96 conflict, with the vast majority of killings blamed on the army and paramilitary groups. In 2013, he was convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity for the killings of 1,771 Mayan Indians by soldiers under his command. A court later overturned the ruling, and a retrial that was supposed to begin in January has been delayed."

As I stopped by the gallery for our Guatemala Después exhibition today, I found a young man intently gazing at the timeline for quite a while. I decided to approach him and ask about why he was there and what he thought of the exhibit. It turns out that he’s a Guatemalan living in New York. You can hear my impromptu interview with Daniel Velasquez here; it was quite moving hearing from him about his experience.
The exhibit is currently on view at the Aronson Gallery, The New School till April 29th. Hope you get a chance to see it. - Nitin Sawhney

The New York Times releases a stunning photo-essay on Guatemala today: "The war no longer rages, but conflicts persist. That realization led James Rodriguez, a Mexican-American photographer living in Guatemala, to document the continuing search for justice in a country whose people find peace by leaving the country by any means necessary."
Searching for Peace and Justice in Guatemala The civil war ended almost 20 years ago, but the country is struggling to bring justice to communities shattered by the conflict.
