Some 51 Ukrainian paintings that secretly left Kyiv earlier this month, just hours before a massive Russian missile attack on the capital, began an exhibition at a leading museum in Spain on Tuesday.

"The exhibition ‘In the Eye of the Storm: Modernism in Ukraine, 1900–1930s,’ presents ground-breaking art produced in Ukraine in the first decades of the 20th century," the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid said in a statement.

The works, on loan from the National Art Museum of Ukraine and other museums in the country, "were packed in secrecy" onto trucks and left Kyiv on November 15, said a statement from Museums for Ukraine, a group of museums which collaborate to help protect Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

The trucks "faced a treacherous journey as they passed through areas of unexpected heavy missile fire" heading west, past the city of Lviv and finally across the Polish border, the statement added.

The convoy carrying the art reached Madrid on November 20 and went to the Thyssen museum, whose board member, Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, founded Museums for Ukraine in March, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

"It is becoming clearer day by day that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war against Ukraine is not only about stealing territory, but it is also about controlling the nation’s narrative and its cultural heritage," Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza said.

"This exhibition aims to recover the history of modernism in Ukraine. As we watch history repeat itself, this exhibition is a powerful reminder of how close we are to another disaster," she said.

"This exhibition is the most comprehensive survey of Ukrainian avant-garde art in a major European museum to date," the Museums for Ukraine added.

In addition to the 51 paintings that left Ukraine in the convoy, the exhibition includes about 18 other Ukrainian works, from sketches and collages to theater designs, including from private collectors, museum organizers said.

The exhibit will be shown in Madrid through to April 30, before heading to the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany. Further venues are to be decided after that.

An Airbus 380 is on its way across the Atlantic. It flies consistently at 800 km/h at 30,000 feet, when suddenly an Eurofighter with a Tempo Mach 2 appears.

The pilot of the fighter jet slows down, flies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: "Airbus, boring flight isn’t it? Now have a look here!"

He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, and then swoops down almost to sea level in a breathtaking dive. He loops back next to the Airbus and asks: "Well, how was that?"

The Airbus pilot answers: "Very impressive, but watch this!"

The jet pilot watches the Airbus, but nothing happens. It continues to fly straight, at the same speed. After 15 minutes, the Airbus pilot radios, "Well, how was that?

Confused, the jet pilot asks, "What did you do?"

The Airbus pilot laughs and says: "I got up, stretched my legs, walked to the back of the aircraft to use the washroom, then got a cup of coffee and a chocolate fudge pastry."

The moral of the story is: When you’re young, speed and adrenaline seems to be great. But as you get older and wiser, you learn that comfort and peace are more important.

A growing number of companies are buying up space in the metaverse so that they can set up shop there. These firms include the likes of Adidas, Burberry, Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Samsung, Louis Vuitton, and even banks HSBC and JP Morgan.

The question for such businesses, though, is what location do they pick? There are now some 50 or so different providers of worlds within the metaverse, with the most popular ones including The Sandbox, Decentraland, Voxels, and Somnium Space, plus Meta’s own Horizon Worlds.

Fear grips cryptocurrency traders and magnifies the global rout in US$247 billion DeFi market, Binance’s founder CZ says.

* There were a total of US$879 million of liquidations this recent weekend, according to data compiled by Coinglass.

* Three Arrows Capital in Singapore was the latest to be liquidated, after Babel Finance in Hong Kong halted customers’ withdrawals last week.

The increasing use of high-yield leveraged products has exacerbated the rout in the US$247 billion decentralised finance (DeFi) industry, as fear gripped cryptocurrency traders and sent the market into its biggest shakeout since 2018, said the founder of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.

Three Arrows Capital, a US$10 billion cryptocurrency hedge fund in Singapore, was the latest to fall victim to the market rout, being liquidated by multiple exchanges after failing to meet margin calls amid a crash in the prices of virtual currencies.

Bitcoin, the biggest virtual currency, plunged below US$20,000 on Monday, the lowest in 18 months, while the prices of other coins tumbled across the board.

Hong Kong’s iconic Jumbo Floating Restaurant towed away from Aberdeen after 46 years.

Hong Kong’s Jumbo Floating Restaurant, a famed but ageing tourist attraction that featured in multiple Cantonese and Hollywood films, was towed out of the city on Tuesday (Jun 14) after years of revitalisation efforts went nowhere.

The buoyant behemoth, which at 76m long could house 2,300 diners, set out shortly before noon from the southern Hong Kong Island typhoon shelter where it has sat for nearly half a century.

Designed like a Chinese imperial palace and once considered a must-see landmark, the restaurant drew visitors from Queen Elizabeth II to Tom Cruise, and featured in several films – including Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, about a deadly global pandemic.

The lavish restaurant’s operators cited the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for finally closing its doors in March 2020, after around a decade of financial woes.

Opened in 1976 by the late casino tycoon Stanley Ho, the Jumbo Floating Restaurant embodied the height of luxury, reportedly costing over HK$30 million (US$3.8 million) to build.

TamJai F&B chain launches “Souper Hero” NFTs with Hong Kong Arts Centre’s project “Out of the Cube” to support the local Digital Artist communities

The F&B group said in a statement that its NFT collection “Souper Hero” will be launched on 19 June 2022. The collection, created by local comic artists such as Wong, Kam Siu-man, Big Y, and Chow Siumou, consists of four series, including the TamJai Topping series, the TamJai JehJeh series, the SamGor Topping series, and the SamGor Character series.

A total of 10,020 pieces of NFTs will be minted, of which 1,000 are reserved for whitelisting with the pre-sale scheduled on 8 June 2022 and 20 for auction.

The collection will be available on the NFT marketplace Artzioneer which accepts fiat money such as credit cards. Moreover, every NFT is priced at HK$500. TamJai International said that art in any form should be available to anyone and everyone.

Owners of the NFTs are also entitled to a variety of privileges, such as a free bowl of rice noodles with two toppings, a free VIP membership at either TamJai or SamGor, as well as invitations to private events. Owners can also gain bonus points to redeem rewards, along with a vast array of perks.
