Rocco Design hopes that this functional space can have more possibilities. While it may just be a piece of art for the 50th anniversary of the School, it also forms a part of the landscape. The place itself is a warm gathering space for teachers and students, and they can use it to enjoy this piece of 'artwork' or to interact with it.

These provocative geometric images that activate one’s soul will gradually turn into memories, accompanying students through their education journey at this wonderful school.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pentecostal Holiness Church Wing Kwong College, Rocco Design was tasked to create a set of clean and simple, yet powerful and dynamic commemorative signs for the school campus. These signs also serve as a set of communal outdoor features that are in harmony with the campus.

Our design does not only meet the needs to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the School, but it also creates a comfortable and interesting communal space that will continue to play a role around the campus in the years to come.

Rocco Design Studio is proud to have been commissioned to design and build yet another secondary school library project, the Hang Yee Library, in as many years.

The challenge that our designers had to contend with on this occasion includes a number of new programs and functions that needed to be installed in a long and narrow space where the library of less than 190 SM is located. Without compromising the vast collections of existing books, the School aims to have two additional small-group learning rooms, a self-study area, and an interactive zone for a class of students to host different reading and learning activities.

Along the long corridor outside the library, our designers opened the front area of the library to accommodate book displays and to allow a sufficient reading space. Bookshelves are constructed to complement and enhance the functionality of the library by having reading tables and chairs strategically placed within. The end result is that the users will feel they are truly immersed in a sea of knowledge.
Various spaces are reserved at the rear end of the library for different functions, and the service counter and computer station are placed in the middle to serve both sides of the library.

To connect the two wings of the library, our designers applied different circular elements to complement the ceiling design and to further energise the spatial movement, symbolising the spread of knowledge.

Stepping out from our designed bamboo graphics glass wall inside the library, the colorful orange lines on floor further lead you to the sky garden – an extension outdoor reading space – filled with plants and greenery is certainly a haven for reading!

On the first floor, the study zone is put at a corner away from the interactive zone, providing the quietness one’s need and a calm view facing the sky garden outside and what’s more – the Victoria Harbor.

At the interactive zone, we designed interesting seating modules and selected flexible & versatile furniture so that teachers and students could re-adjust the layout easily and create different seating arrangements to suit various types of programs and functions.

The new campus’s library, located at a quiet corner of the campus, is 2-storey glass box with an internal staircase for its vertical circulation.

After considering the pros and cons of the existing new building and its basic provision, our designers decided to put the reading area on the ground floor which allows more visibility from the outside with its false ceiling clearance of 3M and could easily draw student’s attention where the library is in this comparatively remoted area inside the school while first floor’s low headroom of 2.4M is more suitable for intimate activities, like the study zone and interactive zone.

Our design approach for the library is always to encourage and intrigue students to read more, and it would be a place where students love to hang around. We created an organic maze layout for the reading zone. The bookshelves are thoughtfully arranged in a non-rigid and dynamic form; one would find surprises when passing through the maze – high and low bookshelves, book featuring islands, different types of formal and informal reading areas running through the space; every single corner provides you with a different perspective.

Without defining front or back, you could walk around our customized bookshelves and pick up whatever books you like handily and intuitively, simply like a treasure hunt!

🎙️Guest Lectures at SHTM, PolyU! 🏢💡

Our Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Dr. Joseph C Lau Joseph Lau, was recently invited as the guest speaker for 2 special sessions on “Design for Hospitality” to the master students from the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) . 🌟

🏗️ Dr. Lau, drawing from years of industry expertise, shared invaluable insights from his extensive experience as both a developer and an architect. From land acquisition, followed by the design concept of a hotel, till the commencement of the construction, Dr. Lau’s in-depth sharing covers not only the creative aspects of design, but also delves into the financial analysis and operational considerations that inspire the students to contemplate the practical aspects that shape successful hospitality ventures. 💰📊

Apart from designing a functional conference room in which a large display cabinet is used to house various exhibits, our designers have also created a special graphics as the backdrop of the largest display unit.

On this graphical history wall, elements of the founding organization, Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, and the three different stages of the school development history over the years – from the changes of the school name to school badge designs and campus locations – are shown. In addition, the names of the founders, fathers, and past and present principals are prominently displayed to pay tribute to their dedication and devotion to the School.

The Heritage-cum-Conference Room on the new campus at Maryknoll Secondary School is a multi-purpose and versatile venue for both internal and external parties to hold meetings and gatherings, as well as a waiting area for distinguished guests to attend special events, occasions, and ceremonies. It is an ideal place to display a wide variety of memorabilia and to showcase the School's history and achievements over the past 100 years.

Further your journey and walk towards the core, you would reach the heart of the School – a large semi-open atrium which serves as a covered playground, an interior gathering point and a visual connection among the School hall, lecture room and many different types of functional areas. It is the place where we have put our design “Tree of Education” – a funding tree which gives thanks to all the donors in the support of School’s services.

The 11M width x 7.25M height graphic tree, made of stainless steel, with the birds flying in and out symbolizes the power of education – to nurture and to grow, to serve and to contribute. Donors name plaques would be presented in the form of leaves, apples and stones; these would make the tree grow bigger and more mature and with more substances as time goes by.

Once you approach the main entrance, a magnificent school building name sign and a huge holy family statue – the spirit of Maryknoll and the foundation of this Catholic secondary school – would welcome your attention.

These 2 installations certainly define the identity of Maryknoll Secondary School and their lightings high-lighted the gate when the night comes – the only dark spotlight, giving you the power of hope. This check-in point is surely one of the best photo-taking spots at school.

One interesting design element for the new campus is the unconventional running track surrounding the school buildings; a 350m long track guided by stimulating graphics.

Our designers started the analysis of the site in relation to Hong Kong through road, sea and air routes, and its surrounding neighbourhood. Drawing from these dynamics flows, we created an extraordinary running track filled with organic power – the power of DNA (the motif); the DNA of Maryknoll Secondary School through her 4 house colours; a secondary layer of directory system is further infused between these DNA links to serve as the directional signs which direct visitors to various locations of the buildings.

Maryknoll Secondary School appointed Rocco Design to enhance the basic provision from the Hong Kong Government for all classrooms and administrative areas; to insert new complementary programs with a library & sky garden, gymnasium, band room, changing & shower rooms, heritage cm conference room, lecture hall and chapel as well as spaces for specific learning like STEM room, Design & Technology Room and Campus TV room; to provide different types of signage around the campus; basically, our design mandate covers everything the School needs for its daily operation and usage.

The new campus of Maryknoll Secondary School, situated on On Sau Road, Kwun Tong, covers a total land area of 7,500 SM – 3 times bigger than the old campus serving over half a century – allowing more activities, events and functions happened for teachers, students, the neighbourhood, and the district.

Our design approach is to create a dynamic and versatile learning environment filled with energy to excite both teachers and students from their robotic routine. We believe learning should be active not passive; inspiring not monotonous.

Congratulations again to all the winners!

Our Co-founder and Managing Partner, Dr. Joseph C Lau Joseph Lau , was invited to teach the Stage and Set Elective Course at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for the Spring semester in 2023. The course has came to an end perfectly with the award presentation held on July 10, 2023 at the PolyU Design Annual Show Ceremony.

Rocco Design Studio sponsored three Rocco Design Studio Awards, namely The Best Set Design, The Best Lighting Design and The Best Overall Design for the students who studied the Stage and Set Elective Course during the spring semester in 2023. The awards aim to give recognition to those outstanding teams for their design projects completed during the course under the guidance from Dr. Lau.

In the past few years, Rocco Design Studio has been working closely with our client, Maryknoll Secondary School, for their new campus at On Sau Road, Kwun Tong, Hong Kong. The stages taken on this Design and Build project, ranging from different design approaches of the exterior and interior signages to the featured funding tree tribute wall; renovation of special purpose rooms to the lecture hall theatre and a two-story library; and several types of customized school furniture.

The said project was completed with many positive responses from the teachers, parents, students, other school principals, friends, and alumni. The final product exceeds the School’s expectations.

A Thanksgiving Service cm Grand Opening Ceremony was successfully held at the new campus on March 3, 2023. Rocco Design Studio was invited to share this thankful event and joyful moment with our client. From the speech shared by the Principal, Mr. Martin Lai, he mentioned the School’s appreciation for the details and accountability Rocco Design Studio has demonstrated on every segment of this Design and Build Project, given the tight construction schedule with less than 2 months on site applications.
