Commissioned by the Asia Culture Center (ACC) ( ), Gwangju, Leung Chi Wo + Sara Wong produce a short film that appropriates a photograph by Kim Ki-Chan (1938-2005), a work from the ACC Archive. The figures’ gestures in the photograph are re-played by another woman (Park So Young) born many years later, showing the encounter and interaction between the two persons, transcending the generation gap.👩‍👦

This is the first video developed from the duo's ongoing project 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘴𝘵 which examines anonymous individuals captured in news photographs and archival images. 👀

While painting 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘦 (2024), Chihoi was looping in the background the song 《第十支煙》 (The tenth cigarette) by my little airport ( ). “Yooyun Yang: With Hands” presents a new body of work that spotlights labor and its palpable traces in hands. The paintings isolate the hands, heightening a sense of solitude in the menial and repetitive task performed by their owner. Hands are synonymous with manual labor, something that is undervalued and overshadowed in an era governed by digital technology. 👷👷‍♀️

To coincide with the theme of these works, we have captured some close-ups of ”hands“ within our gallery space. These intimate shots include the hands of the artists, curator, art handlers, and our gallery staff, capturing hands at work. 🤟

Chihoi’s “The man who doesn’t take metro anymore” (2024) portrays a man gazing at a traffic tunnel, enveloped in a mysterious, burgundy aura. The convergence of the man’s sightline and the end of the tunnel becomes a focal point, leading to an unknown destination, eliciting a yearning for an escape.

The red in the painting evokes Hong Kong’s 紅隧 (translates in English to Red Tunnel), properly named the Cross Harbor Tunnel that connects Hong Kong island to Kowloon side.

The artist has created a six-panel comic strip - 𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳 (《踩界》) - for his solo exhibition at Blindspot Gallery, entitled "Chihoi: Leeway" (“智海:餘地”). “If we think of “餘地” in a literal sense as “remaining land”, I want to express here my longing to escape to a spare land, fleeing far away from the pressures among people,” he said. 🥊

About Yooyun Yang | “𝗬𝗼𝗼𝘆𝘂𝗻 𝗬𝗮𝗻𝗴: 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀” | Opening 1 Jun

Yooyun Yang transforms overlooked crevices of urban contemporary life into fragmented excerpts, often depicting cropped close-ups of people and places with disorienting perspectives. Yang who was trained in traditional Korean ink wash painting creates works by painting layers of diluted acrylic on Jangji paper. With her distinct sensitivity, fleetingly mundane scenes become otherworldly and surreal. Her works which stem from photographs have a hazy and porous texture; juxtaposed with her use of chiaroscuro, the paintings are imbued with a cinematic ambience. 👤

About Chihoi | "𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗵𝗼𝗶: 𝗟𝗲𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘆"| Opening 1 Jun

Chihoi is a self-taught artist with a practice stemming from drawing and illustrations. He has also been publishing comic books since the late 1990s. Over the years, his practice has expanded to encompass oil painting. Chihoi would transform imagination and story into frame-by-frame pictures in his comics. While as a painter, he would begin with observation and thoughts from reality, before materializing these introspections into intimate tableaus, capturing fleeting moments that allude to one’s inner psyche. Chihoi’s painted scenes carry urban textures and existential underpinnings, at times unveiling estrangement from an environment that once felt familiar. 💆‍♂️

An exclusive limited edition print of Sin Wai Kin's 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘥 (2024) will be on view at exhibition "All the Lovers: Editions from 30 Years of Gasworks" to celebrate Gasworks's ( ) 30th anniversary, opening from 31 May to 2 June 2024 at London, coinciding with London Gallery Weekend.! Happy birthday to Gasworks! 🎉🎉

The work is also available to view and purchase on the Gasworks website via link in bio. 🔗

The edition is "a behind-the-scenes image shot during the filming of 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘥, their 2023 solo exhibition at Fondazione Memmo ( ), Rome. In the film, 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘥, Wai Kin plays multiple characters and identities that evolve, split and sometimes morph into each other. They borrow and reshape elements from multiple cinematic genres, including thriller, noir, and fantasy – distorting the conventional frameworks of narrative cinema, undoing categorisations, and dissolving the lines between them. In the edition too, they disguise and morph their identity and their roles as the artist, the film star, the writer, and the director, challenging these hierarchies and imagining something different." - Gasworks

Wai Kin used to be the studio artist of Gasworks from 1 May 2018 – 31 Aug 2023.

Congratulations to Isaac Chong Wai ( ) who has been awarded the Désirée and Hans Michael Jebsen Fellowship from Asian Cultural Council ( ), an artist residency which took place in New York for a period of six months! 🗽

Chong will research the performance art scene in New York, focusing on Asian diaspora communities' practices and platforms. He seeks to foster connections between Hong Kong and New York, contribute to dialogues on anti-Asian racism, and expand his video work 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘺 (2021-2024) developed in response to attacks against Asian individuals during the pandemic. He aims to challenge stereotypes and promote empathy by connecting with AAPI artists and cultural workers. 🚶🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘺 is currently on view at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia entitled ”Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere“ curated by Adriano Pedrosa.
