Challenges young adults learning English face in Hong Kong. 2015-11-04

When students are asked to identify the parts of speech, some secondary students really do not have a clue to what that truly means. They are told to memorise the spellings and the sounds of words, but not really to understand how to use them logically. Some of them do not even know what are, proper nouns, and common nouns, singular and plural, countable and uncountable nouns, all of which are the basic concepts of learning English.

Common nouns are words for people, or things, or animals, or ideas. For example, he / she is an ‘architect’, that is my ‘computer’, that ‘leopard’ is big. Proper nouns are special names given to people, places and things including ‘months’, ‘days of the week’, ‘festivals’ and ‘countries’ and their ‘capital cities’. They always begin with a capital letter. For example, ‘Professor Black’, ‘April’, ‘Monday’, ‘Father’s / Mother’s Day’, ‘Germany’ and ‘Berlin’.

The famous landmarks of countries as well as the people who live in a country are also proper nouns such as ‘Big Ben’ (London, England), the ‘Sphinx’ (Egypt, Gizeh), the ‘Swiss’ (people from Switzerland), and ‘Canadians’ (people from Canada).

English is a complexed language to learn and students in Hong Kong have the opportunity to learn it from a very young age. Educators have the privilege to share their knowledge with the students and help them develop a positive attitude towards learning and growing, but unfortunately, there are no external environments outside the classroom that encourages the students to practice their English, for example, ‘London Town’, ‘Washington Town’ etc.

Apart from identifying the different tenses being the basic foundation of learning English grammar, parts of speech are equally as important. The traditional categorization of eight parts of speech are nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions and interjections.

Many English words can belong to more than one part of speech based on their use and functions. In fact, the same word can be a verb in one sentence and an adjective in the next. For example, 'a haunted house', 'a closed door', 'added value'. Haunted, Closed and Added are past participles of the regular verbs Haunt, Close and Add but in these cases, they are used as adjectives.

Can you work out which is which in this example? ‘Live’ birds ‘Live’ in the zoo.

By recognising and familiarising the different parts of speech, which are the fundamental concepts that students will encounter throughout the study of grammar, they can become a better writer as well as an effective communicator.

Challenges young adults learning English face in Hong Kong. 2015-11-02

When younger students are reading storybooks on their own, they often find it confusing and difficult to understand due to the new vocabulary and different syntax, (British and American, writing sentence structure and vocabulary), mixed tenses and some words they do not know how to pronounce. Most of the time they give up half way through the reading process.
Primary students who are six to seven years old do not understand the mixed tenses as they only learn simple present tense at school. Guidance and explanations are needed when reading storybooks. Starting from primary three up to primary six, students learn about the use of different tenses so it is crucial to ensure they understand the basic rules of English grammar and how to apply it to different situations. As soon as they have a good foundation and concept, reading and writing will become much easier for them and in turn learn and practise.

Another part of the speaking exam is individual response. The question for each candidate is different. Students will be asked one question based on the discussion topic. They have to use their personal experience and ideas to answer the question.
There is no preparation time given so students must identify the question type and organise their ideas as fast as possible so that they can answer the question within the limited time. When expressing themselves, students are advised to speak audibly and clearly. Maintain eye contact with the examiners from time to time. If students cannot fully understand the question, they may ask for another question.

The last part of the HKDSE exam is the Speaking exam. It aims to test the students on their ability of clear and effective verbal communication.

When students are having a discussion based on a given text / topic, they may have to make suggestions, give advice, argue for or against an opinion / view / comment etc. A good start is always essential, by giving a simple greeting and to initiate the discussion, then state the aim of the discourse, raise the first point and ask for opinions and or comments. It is important to leave a good impression for the examiners to gage your performance on.

More text type examples which students may encounter in Part B of the DSE Listening and Integrated Skills exam are profiles, proposals, reports and reviews.

A personal profile is a biography, description of a particular person's personal information, background, career and achievements. The heading must show the name of the person.

A proposal should have a title, followed by an introduction to explain the reason and the purpose that is then followed by the main body, which provides reasons and effects on each recommended event or activity. Lastly, a conclusion to ask for consideration and approval from someone in a higher position.

There are various rationales for writing reports. The most common purpose is to present survey results. Students have to provide the facts and findings obtained from the survey and offer recommendations based on discovered results.

A review is to comment on a certain piece of work. It evaluates and gives the readers a clearer picture of the subject and or topic. Remember when writing a review, a Wide range of adjectives and adverbs should be used.

As previously mentioned, the writing tasks in the Listening and Integrated Skills exam may be required in various formats. Students may be asked to write an article to provide information or discuss a topic. It should consist of title, introduction, main body and conclusion.
For letters, there are two styles - formal and informal. Students must distinguish between the two styles and use the appropriate way to address the recipient, greeting and complimentary close. For example, a letter of advice is usually an informal letter. As it is in response to a request for help, students should write in a friendly tone and use sequence words in order to make clearer advice. On the other hand, Letters of complaint and or of invitation are usually formal letters, so formal language should be used.

Part B of the HKDSE Listening and Integrated Skills exam is mainly writing. At least one of the writing tasks is extended writing. Students have to combine the data from the reading data file and the recordings to accomplish the tasks. There are different text types which can be articles, an invitation letter, a report or a letter of advice.
Some students might think that it is easy because they can just copy directly from the data file. However, they still have to carefully select the correct data and construct sentences. All sentence structures must be grammatically correct and the whole text must be readable.

During the DSE Listening and Integrated Skills exam, students are often misled or get confused because not every word in the recordings is relevant to the questions. Students are advised to judge what is relevant or not.

Try to listen to the key words in the recordings. For example, words that are repeated. When the speakers repeat what they have said or request another speakers to repeat something, that information is usually important. Words which are, the names of people and places (Proper Nouns) that spelt out for you. Also, the transitional and signalling words such as but, however and while, are words to show a change of idea or opinion.

Challenges young adults learning English face in Hong Kong.
Many students do not realise just how difficult the DSE listening exam is, until they start to do the practice papers in their senior forms. Some of them can easily understand what the dialogue is about but cannot spell the words, whereas others, just do not have the ability to keep up with the whole conversation and are completely lost. It does require years of speaking and listening practice.

Students can self-practise by watching the English news, with English subtitles. This does not only enhance their listening skills but at the same time, also helps them to learn and recognise new words. Both Old and New English films and TV programmes do help, but try to avoid reading any Chinese subtitles and see how much they can understand.

There are other effective ways to improve your writing skills. When it comes to argumentative essays, the first paragraph is always the introduction and the last is always the conclusion. It is advisable to have a topic sentence as the first sentence of each paragraph. It allows the readers to grasp your idea and arouse their interest in the topic, so as to keep them wanting to continue reading. Short stories and journal entries are exceptions to the rule as these forms / styles of writing require a much wider range of verbs, adjectives etcetera so as to describe the feelings or the scenes vividly.

Challenges young adults learning English face in Hong Kong.

There are two parts in the HKDSE writing exam. Part A is compulsory which can be any types of topics while Part B contains eight modules. Apart from lacking of vocabulary, Hong Kong students seem not know how to apply what they have learnt in years into their writings. The simplest one, for example, punctuation. All they know is just comma and full stop but somehow they occasionally use them incorrectly . By using different punctuation marks, different feelings can be expressed. For instance, an ellipsis (...) indicates a pause or omission of words in a sentence; a semi-colon (;) breaks a long list. Using punctuation marks appropriately can help you gain higher marks in the exam, do not ignore the importance of it.
