“Unproductive” by Sai Pradhan
•Medium: Oil and Acrylic on Canvas
•Size: 91.4cm x 91.4cm
•Price: $25,000 Hkd
“This is a self-portrait. I suppose sharing context on the scene is me breaking the proscenium, as it were. With that in mind, I enjoyed making the reading light look like a stage light, and the curtains a bit theatrical. I put in a soft sense of darkness around the lit scene, and played with the paint to make it scrim-like.
The audience’s gaze, etc, mine included.
The title is a wink, because we live in a world where all leisure is often commodified, and everything is an activity in prescribed blocks of time. Time seems to be removed from life, and is often not our own.
Besides, women are often not considered “productive” unless they’re very obviously working in commonly understood ways, or having children. When I stepped beyond a corporate work life, I used to feel a weird sense of guilt just being. The guilt didn’t come out of the thin blue; it’s conditioning and social
disapprobation at work. I am still made to experience it at times, because many people simply do not take art makers or writers seriously unless someone becomes
“famous,” but l’ve learned that the trick is to carry on.
And...turn things into art.” -
“What is this giddying place, With no firm-fixéd floor, That I knew not of before?” “It is Life,” said a mask-clad face. — The Masked Face, Thomas Hardy, 1917
Admit it. We are narcissists. From commissioned portraits of kings and nobles to “leaked” nudes of celebrities, we can’t help but be obsessed with immortalising our image.
Young Soy Gallery is proud to present “Unmasked”, a group exhibition that gathers four Hong Kong artists, Mr Koo, Louie Jaubere, Jerome Leung, Sai Pradhan, and one international artist, Jake Scharbach, to challenge the tradition of portrait making, propelling viewers to see portraiture as a mirror that reflects societal conditions and the shared emotions of our time.
In Mr Koo’s ambiguous faces and Jerome Leung’s mouthless figures, the two artists draw references from their day-to-day encounters to explore the transformative power of emotion and the nuances in human connections.
While Louie Jaubere and Jake Scharbach’s mixed media works interrogate our preoccupation with celebrity and the power structures that dictate society, Sai Pradhan’s introspective paintings challenge the stigma around work and (un-)productivity.
“Unmasked” invites viewers to re-examine “portraiture”, prompting them to see beyond what is visible, abandon the giddy masks, and contemplate on the complexity of the human condition that makes each face.
Rip away mask-clad faces and reconsider the images people present to the world at Young Soy Gallery between the 26th of September until the 13th of October.

HONG KONG BABY GIRL by Kitty Wong - https://mailchi.mp/youngsoy/hkbbg
Young Soy Gallery is proud to present HKBBG (Hong Kong Baby Girl), an artist-in-residence programme featuring Hong Kong artist Kitty Wong. 🧖♀️🇭🇰🍭
Having spent her formative years in Canada, Kitty has been capturing the memories she has of her childhood city Hong Kong for over a decade. Her illustrations are a love letter to the city — drawing inspirations from the collective memory as well as the uncompromisingly strong women and iconic scenery of Hong Kong.
During her residency, Young Soy Gallery will be transformed into Kitty’s studio space where she will create a new body of work and invite the public to witness her creative process.
“HKBBG” (Hong Kong Baby Girl) aims to awaken the playful, vivid and sassy energy within every Hong Konger, celebrating the city’s dynamic spirit and those who embody it.
Join us at Young Soy Gallery between July 31 to August 13 to awaken the HKBBG in you as you see Kitty’s imaginations come to life!
