During their residency at Eaton HK, July Weber continue their research around performing for and with non-human entities - focus on confronting(dancing) with our fears, through establishing and switching between different “fear-characters”, develop a sort of somatic schizophrenia and investigate into possible therapeutic and creative aspects of a physical dialogue with our fears. July is also collaborating with musician Makita in constructing a performative album of electronic soundscapes for different summoned fears.

FightClub is a new episode of the series of events by the same name by July Weber, where dancers, musicians and visual artists are invited to test out different formats of improvisation. Every time a certain chance-operation is involved which creates unexpected encounters. The plattform started in an off-space in Berlin Wedding and continued into different environments. In this new iteration, Weber will experiment improvisation with dancers from Unlock Dancing Plaza and musicians Michael Chan, Gold Mountain and Lawrence Lau.

Observing and discussing the archival methods and strategies of two seminal artists working across expanded performance-making, Re(Play) probes at the notion of re-enactment and the documentary impulse across the works of Dance artist Xavier Le Roy and Performance artist Melati Suryodarmo.

Over the course of the exhibition, which takes place under the Expanded Space sidebar of Jumping Frames 2023, Le Roy and Suryodarmo reflect on the entwined relationship of their artistic and life journeys through re-stagings of earlier pieces and concepts that reveal the tensions and connections between language, body, objects, and images.

A rhetorical delusion or heartfelt self-affirmation, “Welcome >_< Take a Seat Wherever (cringevibing on a downward spiral)” explores the emotive language of Gen Z as well as implications of being terminally online in a confusing, almost pathologized, schizophrenic state.

Taking humour as a point of departure, the exhibition looks into the why’s and how’s of memetic irony: why do these devices share an affinity among Gen Z, and how are these memes—in Dawkins’ terms and in a contemporary vernacular—disseminated? In an era where ironic expression is indistinguishable from sincere belief, meme makers conflate ‘based’ with ‘cringe’, readers take comedic scripts as half-truths. The virtual versus actual has become obsolete. So have art and memes that slowly morph into one another.

In true Derridean fashion, the exhibition plays with ellipses and clashes in meaning, langage, visual cultures, and clichés. As savvy gurus and prophets of microtrend cycles, cores and lores, the artists draw inspiration from their mediated realities. They make sense of their subjectivity—in the age of deepfakes, meta-irony, memes as cultural artefacts, hyper-referentiality—through video, sculpture, painting, installation, exe file, and appropriated design image-objects.

Two Readings by A.3.Lingo and Sunday Lai

Two Readings by A.3.Lingo and Sunday Lai bring together dual artistic practices that interpret the signs in our world through painting and video. Through meditation, Lingo paints records of her visions drawn from rural surroundings. Through observation, Lai makes digital recordings of momentary alignment in urban settings. In reading coincidence as signal and narrative, they make magic with the material offered by Hong Kong.

Take me to the River, Draw me a Star 為藝術家羅玉梅個人展覽,為香港逸東酒店於2023年地球月活動 Ways of Water 期下的節目。

Take me to the River, Draw me a Star

(Geography is nothing other than history in space, and history is geography over time.) [6]

Take me to the River, Draw me a Star

More info:

New Pessimism: Tropical frontier brings together a selection of works by Natasha Tontey and Riar Rizaldi, both artists from Indonesia. Natasha Tontey is a multidisciplinary artist and designer who has recently been listed as a ‘Future Great 2023’ by ArtReview. Her works have been shown in transmediale (Berlin), Auto Italia (London), Leeum Museum of Art (Seoul) and so forth, and are now showing at the Singapore Biennale 2022. Riar Rizaldi is an award winning artist and filmmaker. His works have been shown at various international film festivals including Locarno, IFFR, Viennale and so forth, as well as at the Centre Pompidou Paris, Istanbul Biennial and Venice Architecture Biennale.

For the last 10 years, Natasha Tontey and Riar Rizaldi have explored and investigated the notion of horror, terror, and bad taste in popular culture through a series of moving image practices. Their interest in observing and dissecting social, technological, and ecological issues is rooted in the landscape and social dynamic of Indonesia. Growing up consuming campy horror cinema in the 80s and 90s, science-fiction pulp literature, ghost stories, the underground scene, Indonesian soap operas, and engaging with social changemakings and indigenous movements, Natasha and Riar transform the codes of b-grade media and popular culture to generate fiction and narrative where ecological and social issues are dissected in an abstract and sometimes bad taste way. Recently, they label their work as a ‘new style of pessimism.’ A term they use to describe their artistic practice and pessimism towards the social and ecological situation in Indonesia—and also the world.

Feature a cross-section of works produced between 2017 and present, New Pessimism: Tropical frontier reflects the artists’ ongoing commitment to exploring the aesthetic of refusal, the campiness of social dilemma, and the horror imagery of social ecology in the tropical frontier.

The '90s, a beautiful time of self-expression, late night dancing and DIY fashion.

Enter THEN / NOW - an exhibition by Hong Kong photographer Kary Kwok and record release by British rave producer James "The Magus Project" Banbury.

THEN / NOW features 25 photos shot on 35mm at 1995's Alternative Miss World Competition in London where Kary puts the audience in the subject and looks at how they use "outfits' ' as a form of unique expression. In addition, installations and documentaries delve into the audio-visual THEN / NOW project that takes form as an 8-track vinyl record released on independent Hong Kong label Silk Road Sounds. The vinyl features original productions revived from James Banbury's 1992 techno/breaks moniker, alongside remixes from West London brokenbeat producer Wheelup, Hong Kong experimental producer ASJ, Berlin’s Knox-Om-Pax, and acid/jungle specialist Rec Mirage.

The audio-visual partnership by both Kary and James highlights the nocturnal and nostalgic energy of the yesteryears, especially in parties at the likes of Kinky Gerlinky, Taboo, The Wag Club, Heaven, and The Brain.

The project explores how music, art and fashion can be imaginative tools to address political and social issues under the then Margaret Thatcher regime - a time when fantasy, love and clubbing provided escapism to the throbbing underlying social issues that Britain was facing.

Kary’s photos will be on display from 26 January to 1 February at Tomorrow Maybe in its entirety. Attendees are invited on the opening evening to partake in scribbling and writing over the images, merging the past with the present in continuation of club culture’s DIY fashion. Segments of the newly graffitied images will then be cut out, re-framed and displayed in the Foodhall as part two of the THEN / NOW exhibition display from 3 to 19 February.

Tomorrow Maybe at Eaton HK will host GROUNDING a collaborative exhibition with Sample Magazine and Lettercult from 10 December 2022 until 2 January 2023.

The multimedia exhibition is based on the contents of SAMPLE’s ISSUE 27 “E pur si muove” and ISSUE 28 “Terra Forma”. Artists Lazarus Chan Long Fung, Winnie Yan Wai Yin, Wong Winsome Dumalagan, and Tang Kwong San have been commissioned to create new artworks under the theme of GROUNDING.

Following a geology visit to Hong Kong’s Port the artists considered the ground and the Earth as a whole, using the experience to explore their thought processes before and after an imaginary landing on an alien planet, and make the initial experience of encountering a new land tangible again. Located in the North of Tap Mun, Port Island is a ‘red island’ with a distinctive landscape filled with reddish-brown conglomerate and siltstone. The four artists collected rocks and sands from the uninhabited island, observing history through the warping and cracking of rock strata to imagine the transformation of the land. The show’s themes consider the project of starting a new life on an exotic planet.

The title of the Jumping Frames Expanded Space 2022 Edition, “Body-dis-ordered” is a tangent coined out from the festival main theme this year: Body Non Body. The exhibition explores the dysfunction of both human body and the mechanical/ algorithmic system, and how they collide with each other in the language of video, installation and performance.

In a collective contemplation to re-organise embodied memories and body order, the inherited system and independence between bodies, subjectivities, politics, place, and movement, what emerges through the works in this collection proposes a certain engagement to access possible unfamiliar flow in which our body’s own reaction and participation gives shape to the experience.

Co-presented by Tomorrow Maybe and Per.Platform, the 3-days event ‘Fluidity and Impermanence’ explore the notions on questions regarding the material, space, time, body, gender roles and sexual identity, relating them to the fluidity and impermanence nature of performance art, and body as the main medium in the creative process.

Intended to show the diversity and open-endedness of live art, Fluidity and Impermanence investigates the action of artists as artistic expression and engages audience participation in the creative process. The selected proposals from the open call encompass diverse forms of performances, including participatory art, endurance art, lecture performance, performative installation, etc. 18 artists from various backgrounds, such as performance art, theatre, visual art, and media art, will showcase performances from ephemeral (30 mins) to durational (5 hours) specifically situated in the gallery setting of Tomorrow Maybe. On the last day of the festival, there will be a 5-hour group improvisation by 8 local artists, resulting from a performance art workshop led by co-founder of Per.Platform, Florence Lam.

Two performance artists from Japan Yuki Kobayashi and Towako Sano will be the artist-in-residents in Eaton HK from mid July to August. During their residency in Eaton HK, the two artists will share their practice and exchange ideas with local artists, in addition to presenting their performance pieces in ‘Fluidity and Impermanence’. Monique Yim and Yuki Kobayashi will also be providing mentorships for the artists in the show.

Tomorrow Maybe

Tomorrow Maybe opened in late-2018 with a programme of exhibtions that takes Hong Kong as its starting point. Located in Eaton HK, a new hospitality company that marries social change with contemporary culture, Tomorrow Maybe offers a lens into the city for first time visitors and at the same time proposes nuanced readings into the familiar for those who have an intimate relationship to Hong Kong. Projects include new commissions by artists based in Hong Kong, works by international artists providing counterpoint perspectives into the city and group shows by young curators.
