Last week was a whirlwind of activity and excitement in Mumbai, where we enjoyed three exhilarating days at this year's 2023.
During the premier national event, Anglo-Eastern took part in panel discussions, showcased our knowledge and services at our award-winning booth, and were honoured with visits by various high-ranking government officials.
Of particular note were booth visits by Shripad Naik, Minister of State for Tourism and Ports, Shipping and Waterways; T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; and Shyam Jagannathan, Directorate General of Shipping.
If that weren't enough, on the last day of the summit, Anglo-Eastern was awarded for in Global Initiatives by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, which was a proud moment that further acknowledges our commitment to .
Well done and congratulations to our onsite team for all their hard work and contributions in organising Anglo-Eastern's successful participation in this noteworthy event. Another excellent effort!
Speaking on the panel at yesterday's "Focus on Maritime Safety and Security" session at the 2023 was our very own Swapnodeep Mondal, Group Director of Operations, who discussed and how this can contribute to maritime , and .
Optimisation tools are the enablers, but it's the people who use them to make the right decisions that make the difference, hence the importance of excellent seamanship and , emphasised Mr Mondal, who went on to share the following in-house metrics that highlight the tangible impact of fleet optimisation and crew behavioural changes:
- By reducing fuel consumption through optimisation efforts, Anglo-Eastern was able to save 50,000 MT in bunkers last year, which translates to 150,000 MT in reduced CO2 emissions and USD 32 million in cost savings.
- Proper usage of fleet optimisation tools can dramatically cut the time required for such critical tasks as passage planning by up to 70%, allowing the crew to focus on other key areas that can assist with overall efficiency and safety.
- Voyage plans prepared using our fleet optimisation tools are accepted 98% of the time, without any amendments. By providing the crew with optimised voyage plans that align with their specific requirements, we are able to streamline operations and minimise potential errors and delays.
- Our efforts have led to an average reduction in vessel speed by 0.4 knots per voyage. While seemingly small, the impact on carbon and cost reductions is substantial in light of the fact our managed vessels perform 25,000+ voyages every year.
- We have benchmarked the passages of our managed fleet across various vessel types, sizes, drafts, and information via traditional nautical publications versus modern AIS-based vessel traffic visualisation tools, and have reached out to hydrographic offices to recommend updates for the benefit of the entire global shipping community and efforts.
As a proud participant of this year's 2023 (October 17-19), we're enjoying the energy and excitement at this fantastic event! Our team is on hand to meet you at booth D-44, so come by and speak with us on how is shaping a better maritime future through our efforts in , , and .
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the third edition of the summit by video conference on Tuesday, signifying the importance of this high-profile national event, which is being attended by many of India's top dignitaries and industry members. Earlier, we were delighted to be paid a visit by India's Directorate General of Shipping Shyam Jagannathan, amongst others, and will be here till Thursday.
Last week, we wrapped up our highly successful 2023 : . It was an eventful two-day affair, jam packed with numerous insightful talks, networking opportunities, and performances, including a surprise guest appearance by world boxing legend .
Photos alone cannot capture the energy and whirlwind of activity, so we had this clip made to showcase highlights from the event. We'll be following this up with a speaker highlights video and more, so stay tuned and we hope to have you join us for our next conference, be it in Mumbai or Manila!
In the meantime, a big to our team that helped pull this event together and made it the huge success that it was. We'd also like to thank our seafarers, business partners, and guests who were able to join us for this momentous occasion. It was a true effort and production!
India’s newly appointed Director General of Shipping, Shyam Jagannathan, recently paid a visit to Anglo-Eastern’s flagship training centre in Mumbai to view the state-of-the-art facilities and inaugurate the centre’s latest installation: a dual-fuel engine and LNG bunkering simulator designed to train seafarers on the latest technologies as the industry transitions towards a net-zero future.
Mr Jagannathan was warmly received by Capt. K.N. Deboo and Francis Akkara of the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC), and Vineet Gupta, head of our India crewing division. Together, they toured the facilities, which were fully overhauled and redesigned during the centre’s relocation last year. Mr Jagannathan was also given a detailed overview of AEMTC’s extensive course offerings, which visibly impressed him, in particular our keen focus on upskilling seafarers to handle ships for 2030 and beyond.
Following the tour, the Director General of Shipping was invited to inaugurate the newly installed dual-fuel two-stroke engine simulator in the liquid cargo handling simulator room. There, the faculty explained the various aspects of dual-fuel engines, emission control regulations, LNG bunkering requirements, and how the new generation of engines differ in their sophistication compared to simpler conventional engines.
Mr Jagannathan was very keen to discuss how Indian seafarers can gain a competitive edge in the international crewing market. Proactive, quality training is certainly a key contributor, for which he commended AEMTC for doing and expressed his gratitude to the Anglo-Eastern leadership team for its continued strong commitment to India and the country’s seafaring community.
After nearly three hours at the training centre, a working lunch was held at AEMTC’s dedicated cafeteria, where they were joined by the day’s course participants. This was followed by a tour of the Anglo-Eastern crewing office and fleet performance centre, which are located on adjacent floors in the same building. Mr Gupta reiterated Anglo-Eastern’s commitment to India and in maintaining our status as the largest employer of Indian seafarers – a title we have proudly held for the last 13 years and counting.
At the end of the visit, Capt. Deboo presented a token of thanks to Mr Jagannathan, who conveyed his appreciation and a desire to involve industry members in various committees that he will be setting up in the near future, with a view to upgrading the training and examination systems in the Directorate General of Shipping and Mercantile Marine Department. His goal is to build upon the good standing of India’s certificates of competency in the global shipping community, and it goes without saying that we look forward to the opportunity to participate!
Following yesterday's teaser about our 2023 : and surprise guest speaker, it's time for the big reveal: Joining us at the event with his inspiring presence was none other than celebrated legend !
Affectionately dubbed by the media and his international fan base, Mr Pacquiao shared with us his incredible story of grit and perseverance, which saw him rise above poverty to become one of the world's most acclaimed boxers, winning titles in more weight classes than any other in history.
Mr Pacquiao is a true inspiration and we were honoured to have him join us. As the photos show, and as mentioned in our teaser, he was indeed a "big hit" with participants and made a "powerful impact" with his presence!
We’ve been counting down the days since our spectacular Mumbai Conference to bring our seafarers and clients together for another equally momentous occasion, this time in Manila, where we will be reprising our theme, which especially resonated with everyone who joined us in Mumbai earlier this year.
The two-day Manila event kicked off earlier today with this epic trailer, followed by a welcome address by CEO Bjorn Hojgaard and key talks by COO Carsten Ostenfeldt, CIO Torbjorn Dimblad, and Group Managing Director of Marine HR Vinay Singh, who shared insights on the latest developments and trends in the decarbonisation, digitalisation, and crewing space.
We have many other speakers lined up, both in-house and invited, including a surprise guest speaker who proved to be a big hit with participants this afternoon. Stay tuned to find out who made such a powerful impact on our guests and for further highlights from our 2023 Manila Conference!
This sees the global maritime community celebrate 50 years of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships ( ) – the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.
"A lot has changed in shipping in the 50 years since the MARPOL Convention was adopted on 2 November 1973, and IMO's commitment to protecting and preserving the marine environment has remained unwavering," said IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim. "The World Maritime Day theme for 2023 will allow us to celebrate this legacy, while also underscoring our dedication to building on the existing foundations as we move towards a brighter future together."
Let's stay on course for a more sustainable future by each of us continuing to do our part in upholding MARPOL and demonstrating that our commitment to protecting our oceans and the environment does indeed go on.

We are proud to announce the 100th installation of within the Anglo-Eastern managed fleet. The momentous occasion was celebrated on board one of our managed vessels last week and comes just months after announcing our commitment to the service. Needless to say, the response to the enhanced at sea has been overwhelmingly positive in respect to both and .
“We now have Starlink-equipped vessels operating in every corner of the world and we are delighted with the service," said CIO Torbjorn Dimblad. "We consistently experience internet speeds exceeding 100 Mbps everywhere that is available. Starlink-equipped vessels also have 90% fewer connectivity-related issues, with the connection speed enabling a 30% faster resolution of IT support issues, marking a paradigm shift in the way we operate."
The improved connectivity is transforming the interactions between ship and shore. Said Vikrant Malhotra, Managing Director of Group QHSE: “Our QHSE teams run frequent connects with our vessels to discuss incidents and learnings. This used to be a one-to-one conversation, but we are now running combined sessions with three or four vessels over a Teams video call. It is wonderful to see crews interacting with one another, and since it is now a shared experience between vessel teams, we are seeing stronger ownership and collaboration on process improvements.”
In reaching this , we engaged with our crew, gathering valuable feedback on all aspects of the service and its impact on life at sea. “The crew are overwhelmingly positive,” said Vinay Singh, Group Managing Director of Marine HR. “Initially, there were some concerns ashore that individuals would spend more time online and alone in their quarters, potentially affecting overall team cohesion. However, this has not been the case."
For 91% of respondents, time spent online has remained largely unchanged, while over 90% reported a boost in morale and improved crew relations. In their personal lives, the improved speed has allowed crews to connect with family and friends through video calls, stay up to date on news and sporting events, and stream media on services like Netflix. Many respondents have also embraced online learning, completing courses during their time at sea.
“It is well documented that an engaged team has a profound impact on safe, reliable, and efficient vessel operations," remarked COO Carsten Ostenfeldt. "We are pleased to see that the introduction of this technology has had such a positive development across the fleet.”
This milestone reaffirms Anglo-Eastern's dedication to being in deploying transformative technologies for the benefit of vessels and their crews. “We look forward to these contributions making the maritime industry more resilient, efficient, and interconnected than ever before," said CEO Bjorn Hojgaard.
We were pleased to take part in the two-day Offshore Support Journal Conference, Asia 2023 in Singapore. Speaking in today's morning session was Anglo-Eastern chief information officer Torbjorn Dimblad, who discussed ( ) satellite systems as a for the industry.
From transforming by delivering improved bandwidth and maximum uptime to improving communications for both the business and and ensuring flexibility for the future, LEO satellite systems offer a way to close the gap between offshore and onshore operations in a way never before possible.
The benefits also extend to ships, which can now operate as remote offices to the business – something Anglo-Eastern knows first-hand, being an early adopter of LEO. Since March this year, we have been installing on board a number of our managed vessels, which has brought immeasurable benefits to both ship operations and crew welfare.

Our heartiest congratulations to our Odesa team at Anglo-Eastern Ukraine, which proudly celebrated its 14th anniversary today as well as the recent honour of being awarded the title “Industry Leader 2022”, ranking first amongst seven top companies in the Odesa region. That's certainly a lot to celebrate, and it doesn't stop there!
Another cause to rejoice is the recent renovation of the Odesa crewing office and training centre, following damage to the premises caused by a nearby missile explosion a few weeks ago. Representatives of the Ukraine Maritime Administration visited the facilities and found it to be in good condition and were very impressed with the simulator installations and cloud simulator.
"Here’s to another year of teamwork, growth, and success. Your professionalism, dedication, and hard work have been the driving force behind it," said Capt. Andriy Boyko, head of Anglo-Eastern Ukraine, to his team. "We would like to thank you for these wonderful years of service, which we greatly appreciate.
