I am so happy that next week I am going to do a Dalcroze Eurhythmics workshop for 9-10 years old children in local school.

This time they are going to move with nature such as sea creatures and waves, to feel different kind of accent and dynamic in rhythm. Hope they enjoy to experience beautiful music with the body and learn to sing beautiful song.

As an adult who was traditionally trained in music, I really wish I had learned about rhythm this way - through the ear and body. The Dalcroze movement games are imaginative while cleverly integrating the fundamentals of musicianship. The children are encouraged to move their whole bodies during the entire class, which is perfect for their attention and development. My child has enthusiastically said each week that the exercises are, “So much fun,” and asks to go back again. I can tell that he is really enjoying the creative expression. Jessica Yu

Our Story

I started my journey of Dalcroze Eurhythmics after being inspired by a book ‘Rhythm and Movement’ by Elsa Findly in early 90’s. Meeting my first Dalcroze eurhythmics teacher passing by HK in 1995 started my journey to different countries including Australia, Switzerland and the U.S.A. for summer courses. Ultimately, it led to my study for a Dalcroze Certificate in the U.K in 1998 and after that a two year degree course for a Bachelor of Music and Movement in 2007 at the Jaques Dalcroze Institute in Geneva, Switzerland.

I started using Dalcroze Eurhythmics in 2000 to teach music to young children and have been using it ever since.

I relocated back to Hong Kong in 2009. Since then I have been teaching all ages in different tertiary, secondary and primary schools in HK as well as teachers, professional artists in dance and music. I started the HK Dalcroze Center in 2010 to promote this education in HK. Syntempo is the new name of HK Dalcroze Center.

In 2015, my experience of teaching dancers led me to study Laban’s movement theory and practice at the Trinity Laban college in London UK for a ‘Specialist Diploma in Choreological studies’. I have passed all my exam of Specialist Diploma in Oct. 2017. I shall receive my Certificate on 6 July 2018 in Trinity Laban graduation ceremony.

From listening to moving to perceiving to expressing, concept learning is through a continuous layering process of experiencing in sensing which covering sound and it’s physicality.

Rhythmic movement bring joy and our focus energy for the better of our artistic self and the better as a musician and artist.
