"The world chased, but never caught me" . This phrase of the famous Ukrainian philosopher Grigory Skovoroda illustrates very well the life path and creativity of Nikolai Yakovlevich Novikov, Kolya Novikov, as many people in Odessa have called him. Being outside any system, professing his values and his philosophy of being, balancing between bohemia and the criminal world, walking on a thin edge of extraordinary talent and madness, stubbornly cutting off the superfluous, secondary, focusing on the main thing in his life - to create, to draw! - this was the way of development of this artist's skills. As Novikov wrote about himself «... my only goal is painting. This is my last hope: to draw, write and delight. I really want with all my soul to be useful in art". Unfortunately external forces too often interfered in the life of the artist...
Nikolai's childhood can shed light on his future protesting, anti-social stance... His mother died in 1942, according to contemporaries of the artist at the stake from the hands of the N***s, and indeed we often meet a female figure in the flames in his work. His father returns from the war without both legs, moving on pads begs at railway stations, and eventually dies of drunkenness.... Kolya's younger sister does not survive either, dying in an orphanage from an unknown disease... The future artist and his brother balancing on the verge of survival are forced as children to gain experience in thievery... As a result, Kolya's brother chooses the criminal path, and this is one of the reasons why there is so much criminal symbolism in the artist's paintings...Kolya Novikov's creativity is a reflection of his fate, his character.
Homeless by choice, living without a passport and often without means of subsistence, unrecognized during his lifetime, Nikolay Novikov is an absolutely original phenomenon in the history of the Ukrainian art, the scale and uniqueness of which has already swayed minds and hearts of many European viewers and art collectors. It is not for nothing that many famous art critics call him the Ukrainian Egon Schiele, and Novikov himself considered himself a follower of Van Gogh's philosophy....
The gallery “Galerie Les Noms” organises exhibitions of Nikolai Novikov in European countries in order to introduce the viewer to the diversity of Ukrainian art that goes beyond the usual limits of perception, created absolutely independently, resisting the oppression of the system...just as Ukraine is now fighting for its independence, this artist did not let himself be captured by the framework of the USSR system, the framework of everyday life and socially approved standards. A madman, a rebellious genius, a marginal, a holy fool or even a prophet? Everyone will see something different in these works, but they are all united by one thing - Nikolai Novikov's gift as a fine draughtsman who possessed a line of rare beauty and expressiveness.

В зале Босе художественного музея «Рижская Биржа» (Рига, Домская площадь, 6) открылась персональная выставка живого классика украинского изобразительного искусства Ивана Марчука «Прерванный диалог».

«Если бы меня сейчас спросили, что является высшей формой сотрудничества музеев, я бы сказала - это не только научная работа, конференции, это возможность любить друг друга и помогать друг другу, - сказала, открывая выставку, директор «Рижской Биржи» Дайга Упениеце. - И тут я имею в виду коллег не только из Одесского музея, Киевского центра реставрации, но и Херсонский музей, с которым мы стали большими друзьями. Эта выставка небольшая, но это наш подарок, это наше желание быть вместе с Украиной».

В свою очередь, в своей речи министр культуры Латвии Наурис Пунтулис отметил, что латвийские музыканты в первые же дни после начала преступной войны России провели акции в поддержку Украины, а неделю назад участники движения праздника песни собрали четыре тонны окопных свечей.

«Сегодня мы открываем выставку Ивана Марчука и продолжим своим духом поддерживать Украину до полной победы», - сказал господин министр.

«Весь мир сейчас восторгается украинской армией и спрашивает, откуда силы у украинского народа? - сказал в своей речи посол Украины в Латвии Олександр Мищенко. - Корни этой силы и в работах Ивна Марчука, и в музыке композитора Валентина Сильвестрова... Иван Марчук всегда боролся за украинскую культуру, за украинские традиции, его преследовали во время тоталитарной власти, которая была против свободы и демократии. И никогда украинский народ теперь не овладеет нация с тоталитарным мышлением...».

Краткий обзор выставки провела ее куратор Вита Бирзака, рассказавшая и о самом художнике. Как она сообщила, сейчас представлены десять работ Марчука, впервые в Балтии, выставка проходит в сотрудничестве с директором Galerie Les Noms Юрием Гуцу, которому и принадлежат работы.

Иван Марчук родился в 1936 году в Москаловке Тернопольской области, Украина. Он учился в школе прикладного искусства имени Ивана Траша во Львове и там же в Институте прикладного искусства. В советский период своей творческой деятельности Марчук находился под постоянным контролем Комитета государственной безопасности, вплоть до 1988 года. Его не приняли в Союз художников Украинской ССР, как представителя андеграундного искусства, хотя уже в те годы на его счету было более пятнадцати выставок в разных городах тогда еще Советского Союза. В 1989 году Иван эмигрировал в Австралию, позже переехал в Канаду и США. В 2001 году после терактов 11 сентября в Нью-Йорке вернулся в Украину.

Сейчас на его счету более 150 персональных выставок в Украине и других странах мира. Ему присвоено почетное звание народного художника Украины и лауреата Госпремии имени Шевченко. В 2006 году он стал членом «Золотой гильдии» Международной академии современного искусства в Риме, насчитывающей 51 художника со всего мира, был избран почетным членом ее Ученого совета.

«Марчук все жизнь усиленно работает и продолжает это делать сейчас, - сказала госпожа Бирзака. - У него своеобразные способы творческого проявления. Марчук не причисляет себя к какому-либо жанру, он живописует сюжеты, схожие со сказочными, фантастические фигуры, но есть и гиперреалистические портреты и магические композиции».

Инициатором этой выставки стала живущая почти с начала войны в Латвии Мария Волина, художница и общественный деятель, ныне куратор нынешнего проекта и представитель вышеупомянутой украинской галереи в Латвии.

«В это тяжелое время Латвия оказывает огромную помощь Украине, моему родному государству, - сказала Мария на латышском языке, без бумажки. - Наши народы вместе в достижении человечности и гуманизма в мире. Весь народ Украины благодарен Латвии за поддержку. Наша галерея предлагает работы лучшего украинского художника, чтобы выразить свою благодарность».

По словам Марии, Иван Марчук интенсивно работал над созданием индивидуального живописного стиля и в итоге создал своеобразный прием художественной выразительности, который он называет «плионтанизмом» (от укр. "пльонтати" – "плести, заплетать, соединять"). Вместо обычных мазков он как бы следует за ниткой и плетет кружевную сетку на холсте или картоне.

To support the efforts of Ukrainian artists and galleries to maintain the continuity of the creative process in the conditions of war, Art Museum RIGA BOURSE in collaboration with Galerie Les Noms displays works of Ukrainian artist Ivan Marchuk (Іван Марчук). From January 26 to February 26, 2023, exhibition "Interrupted Dialogue" will be held at The Bosse Exhibition Hall of Art Museum RIGA BOURSE.

Artworks displayed at this exhibition belong to private collection of Yuriy Gutsu (Юрій Гуцу) - founder of the gallery Galerie Les Noms. The curator of the project is a young Ukrainian artist and social activist Mariia Volina (Марія Воліна) - representative of the Galerie Les Noms in Latvia.

Ivan Marchuk has worked intensively to create his own pictorial style, and eventually created his own art technique, which he calls pliontanism (from the Ukrainian пльонтати – to weave, knit). Instead of painting with the usual strokes, he traces and weaves lace networks on his canvas or cardboard. Marchuk does not recognize his style to belong to any sophisticated classification, because he has done artworks in nearly all genres imaginable: landscapes, portraits, and something fairy-like. He paints fantastic figural and floral compositions with elements of surrealism, but also hyperrealist portraits, enigmatic landscapes, and abstract expressionist compositions.

The artist was born in 1936 in the Moskalivka village, Ternopil region (Москалівка, Тернопільської області). He studied at the Ivan Trush Lviv School of Applied Arts and the Lviv Institute of Applied Arts. He was subjected to harassment and persecution by the State Security Committee (KGB). Until 1988 the Union of Artists of Ukraine did not officially admit Marchuk, but at the same time, he had more than 15 exhibitions in different cities of the former USSR. After that, in 1989, he emigrated to Australia, then traveled to Canada and the USA. In 2001, after the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York, the painter came back to Ukraine. Marchuk has held over 150 personal and 50 collective exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad.

Ivan Marchuk is awarded the honorary title of National Artist of Ukraine. In 2006 the International Academy of Contemporary Art Golden Guild in Rome included Marchuk in its ranks and elected him as an honorary member of the Academic Council.Today, the Golden Guild consists of 51 artists from all over the world. This is the first time that a Ukrainian artist has been recognized by such a high-level institution.
