The Great Eagle Group Scholarship Signing Ceremony was held on 21 Apr 2023. We are honoured to receive a scholarship amounting to HK$1 million over 5 years from the Great Eagle Group to support ENVR undergraduate students. At the ceremony, Prof. Jimmy FUNG, Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning), Prof. Huamin QU, Director of Interdisciplinary Programs Office, and Prof. Alexis LAU, Head of Division of Environment and Sustainability, delivered a welcome speech to express their heartfelt gratitude to the donor for their generosity and support to our students.

Mr. Alexander LO, Executive Director at Great Eagle Holdings Limited, also shared his view on sustainable development in Hong Kong and hoped that this scholarship could groom future sustainable leaders. The session continued with the sharing from our EVMT student representatives on their fruitful journey during the study. Students had an in-depth discussion with the donor on the career prospect and sustainability issues in the field.

[💬A Dialogue with Students and Young Professionals on Environment and Sustainability – Challenges and Opportunities]

The Dialogue with Members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. HAO Jiming (郝吉明) from Tsinghua University and Prof. ZHANG Yuanhang (张远航) from Peking University was successfully concluded on 21 February. The dialogue has provided an excellent opportunity for our current students and young professionals to meet and chat with two honourable academicians to learn from their thoughts and insights on sustainability. We hope that this remarkable experience sharing could cultivate more young talents in the Environment and Sustainability field.

📝Speakers Biography

Prof. Hao has been recognized for his outstanding work on Energy and Environment, Air Pollution Control in China. As one of the main pioneers and leaders in China's air pollution research, he made significant contributions to the policy-making of acid deposition control and vehicle emission control in China. His research on the characteristics and mechanism of complex air pollution promotes the implementation of joint prevention and control of regional air pollution in China. He is also one of the experts actively leading different academic initiatives in climate change and promoting synergic reductions of pollution and carbon under China’s double-carbon policy.

Prof. Zhang is one of the leading figures in the field of atmospheric environmental chemistry in China. His research has integrated measurement technology development, air quality science and pollution control policies, and achieved prominent breakthroughs in the mechanism of atmospheric oxidation enhancement and haze pollution formation. He has steered the development of national key R&D programmes on ‘Air Pollution Causes and Control Technology Research’, and significantly advanced the understanding of the formation and environmental impact of urban and regional air pollution through his pioneering research. His research also provides outstanding scientific and technological support for the government to develop the air pollution prevention and control technology system.

Government officials, business executives, financiers, investors, technologists, and climate action practitioners discussed Hong Kong’s adaptation and resilience planning in the face of climate change with scholars of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) at the University’s three-day Climate Adaptation and Resilience Conference (CARE2022) which was kicked off with the Science & Policy Day on 10 Dec and attended by about 1,000 participants.

The discussion was extended on Day 2 (11 Dec) by academic scholars in greater detail, and concluded with the Policy & Green Finance Forum on Day 3 (12 Dec).

[ | Strengthening Hong Kong’s to Crises ]

is proud to organize Hong Kong's first large-scale climate adaptation event - Climate Adaptation and Resilience Conference (CARE2022) from 10 to 12 Dec, attended by nearly 1,000 key players from across the public and private sectors. With the support of HKSAR government bureaux and departments, the three-day conference aims to facilitate policy-relevant discussions among government, financial regulators, business and professional stakeholders, NGOs, and academia to strengthen the city’s resilience to climate crises.

The multi-and-interdisciplinary event kicked off with the Science & Policy Day last Friday (10 Dec), offering a comprehensive presentation of Hong Kong’s adaptation plans and projects by the Government, followed by in-depth discussions at two workshops. The discussion was extended on Day 2 by academic scholars in greater detail, and concluded with the Policy & Green Finance Forum on Day 3 today.

Winter Camp is an annual activity organized by ENVR which aims at arousing students’ awareness about environmental and sustainability issues. Through interactive activities and inspiring field trips, students are able to reflect on the environmental and sustainability issues in Hong Kong🌿.

In this trip, we will be visiting Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park and Mai Po Nature Reserve. In Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, a protected area that contains 60 types of hard coral and 120 species of coral, students will have chance to experience the beauty of marine life and learn more about the local marine diversity. In Mai Po Nature Reserve, there are different types of wetland including gei wai (traditional shrimp pond), fishpond, mangrove, reedbed and freshwater marsh etc. Students can capture pictures of the mudflat biodiversity, birds, mudskippers and views within the mangrove forest. We hope students would be able to analyze critically from different stakeholder perspectives on ecology conservation at the end of the camp.

*This is a recognized event in the "Self-directed Experience" component of CORE1905: Behavioral Foundations of University Education: Habits, Mindsets, and Wellness. Students MUST attend the full event in person to obtain 6 hours.
^ Each successful applicant should pay a deposit of HK$1,100 to confirm his/her participation. Upon successful completion of the Winter Camp, a refund of HK$600 will be made to each participant. NO refund will be made to students who fail to complete the whole activity.
# Priority will be given to Year 1 students. The Division of Environment and Sustainability reserves the right to make the final decision if the number of applications exceeds the enrollment quota. The organizer may cancel the trip due to non-attainment of the minimum number of participants (i.e. 12).

ENVR has co-organized the EVMT Alumni Buddy Program with the Environmental Management and Technology Alumni Association (EVMTAA - HKUST EVMT Alumni) and Environmental Management and Technology Students' Society (EVMTSS - Environmental Management and Technology Students' Society,HKUSTSU) since 2021.

This year, we have organized a luncheon for the Buddy Program and we are delighted to have 30 alumni from four main fields of industry including Business and Commerce, Consultancy, Government / Statutory Body and NPO and 28 current students join this joyful gathering . Our current students have gained practical advice from the alumni on planning their EVMT studies, university life and career path. We appreciate the continuous support from our alumni for building EVMT a close-knit community!

Using the state-of-the-art technology, a research team co-led by Prof. NING Zhi, Associate Professor, and Prof. Dasa GU as well as Prof. Zhe WANG, Assistant Professors of the Division of Environment and Sustainability at HKUST, have instigated a series of investigations in collaboration with the EPD and the Government Flying Service (GFS) to develop the monitoring and sampling system for the capture and measurement of vertical and spatial nature of ozone, as well as the key precursors critical for ozone formation and transportation. The research was featured on EP8 of the “New Vitality” TV program by Our Hong Kong Foundation.
