Caribbean reef sharks are viviparous animals that give birth to approximately 3 to 6 pups every two years. The gestation period takes approximately 12 months. Caribbean reef sharks are considered to be one of the top apex predators on coral reefs and as a result are extremely important for coral reef health. Despite their ecological importance, Caribbean reef sharks are threatened by overfishing and other human induced stressors that cause coral reef degradation.
