Erol Josue

Erol Josué is one of the world's best known and most highly respected experts on the centuries-old Haitian Voudou religion.

Ordained as a Houngan (a Voudou priest) in his teens, Josué currently holds the position of General Director of Haiti’s National Bureau of Ethnology, acting as an emissary for both his birthplace and his chosen faith.

Though tens if not hundreds of thousands of Voudou worshippers are in active practice today, the common American and European misunderstanding of the religion is colored by a history of racially derogatory media and general misguided prejudice. Josué regularly conducts ceremonies in his homes of Brooklyn and Haiti, performs dance workshops and concerts and lectures on the nature of Voudou, working tirelessly to destigmatize the religion in the eyes of a Western world that often discounts his beliefs entirely.

An acclaimed academic who has curated extensively at Haiti's Museum of Ethnology and who has taught in both French and English at museums and universities across the world, join Josué TONIGHT AT 7PM

The most anticipated Haitian celebration, Fèt Gede (Festival of the Dead) is an annual two-day tradition in which celebrants fill the city streets to honor the dead. Vodou practitioners, or vodouwizan, dress in white, black, and purple to emulate Bawon Samdi, also known as Papa Gede, who presides over all the festivities. Though people tend to celebrate throughout the entire month, the most concentrated events fall on November 1st and 2nd. How are you celebrating today?⁠
