Sunday Staff Story:

Rosena is a hard worker, she is able to do most all of the process of upcycling with great efficiency, but she likes ironing the best. Due to her asthma, we don't let her do any ironing with the charcoal irons, but she is smitten over our move towards solar, because she is the master ironer with the non-charcoal irons!

We just love this photo from Erin who says she uses this pouch for markers for her kiddos all the time! Erin lived in Haiti for several years and was always a part of our test market. This was a prototype that never came to be. Tell us in the comments how you feel about this type of design. We'd love to know your input. (apparently it's worked well for Erin and her small artists for many years).

Sunday Staff Story:

In this new year we want to share more about the incredible humans that make your products. Every Sunday, we are going to feature a brief little glimpse into the life of one of the PeaceCYCLE family members.

Sissette is such a trooper. She has a special innocence about her that makes her particularly lovable. While she was never afforded the opportunity to go to school, and her processing of some things is a bit slower than others, she has a heart of gold and is a work horse like no other!

Sometimes we modify life a bit to help Sissette adapt. For example, long ago when we wanted to make name badges, she was unable to tell us how to spell her name. Many ideas of how it was spelled where suggested by staff, and we wrote them all down, and let her pick. So now we affectionately refer to her as "S-I-S-S-E-T-T-E" (but she doesn't mind, you can write it any way you like).

And when we made these hand made shirts, she desperately wanted to write PeaceCYCLE on hers..... so we did some dotted letters and she traced them to make her own design! It was an epically proud day!

In this new year we want to share more about the incredible humans that make your products. Every Sunday, we are going to feature a brief little glimpse into the life of one of the PeaceCYCLE family members. Welcome to the 2024 Sunday staff stories!

We start with a very short teaser. This is Achat, a very talented sewer making magic with plastic trash nearly since the beginning of PeaceCYCLE. His big news......... HE JUST GOT MARRIED last week! A huge congrats to Achat and his wife Maïka! More photos to follow. Keep watching here every Sunday to learn more.

We have such a beautiful story to share from some real-life PeaceMAKERS that are truly participating in our CYCLE of Peace.......

So siblings Anna and Will (11 and 5) had birthdays recently, and decided that when relatives and friends asked what to get for gifts, that they would ask for a contribution to share with the people at PeaceCYCLE (having heard about so much heartache happening in Haiti). Various gifts came in and they transferred the money via Venmo to share with people that have less in these times.

Will and Anna's mom made a Venmo transfer of contributions from aunts, uncles, grandparents and neighbors. But 3 days later, another Venmo of $1 arrived.... with this note, "One more dollar from a cousin for Anna's bday gift toward PeaceCycle."

Wade is a saver, he doesn't spend his money frivolously, he holds on to it when he can earn a little money. But when his cousin explained where she was sending the money for her birthday, he lovingly wrapped up a dollar to share with her to subsequently share with The PeaceCYCLE family in Haiti.

We have tears in our eyes about how much peace is being spread in this whole interaction. We have been deeply blessed by the monetary gifts of other relatives - but Wade's $1 means even more to us than larger amounts from high earners. We can't help but think of the widow and her coins with this story, and a huge shout out to Wade, Anna, and Will, as well as their parents who are instilling incredible values and sharing the gift of seeing beyond yourself with their children!

We pray that everyone can begin the new year with the love in their hearts set by the example of Will, Wade, and Anna.

It looks like poor Rudolph is quite exhausted after last night's adventures, but his PeaceCYCLE bags to transport all the treasures around the world remain in good condition.

*UPDATE December 28:
Shelove and his wife made it to the hospital in Mirebalais, but the doctors said the baby is still too small to survive on its own with the equipment they have available.... also, his wife has an infection. So they are treating the infection and keeping her in hospital care on bedrest and trying to keep the baby safe and healthy for a few more weeks if possible before they will perform a c-section.

Baby still maintains a heartbeat, so they remain hopeful, but there remains a lot of uncertainty.

Shelove returned to their home to get a few things with plans to then return to his wife, but on the way to his home there were SO MANY shootings and he is now trapped in his house and can't even leave to go back to the hospital. He wishes he never left, but is hopeful to get back soon.

A note from Rose on this Christmas Eve:

As the Christian world prepares today for the coming of a little baby, we ask for your urgent prayers for another baby to be born tonight. As you know, despite our best efforts, life in Haiti in recent years has been anything but peaceful.

Our dear friend Shelove, the amazing artist behind the metal art that we share with you, is frantically searching for a hospital that is open today to take his pregnant wife and baby in distress. These hospitals are not "closed for the holiday" - but closed because gangs have overtaken them, doctors have been kidnapped, or they simply have no supplies, electricity, staff, or otherwise to treat patients.

Shelove wrote with urgency yesterday:

"Since this morning I am at the hospital with my wife. The doctors say we must quickly take out the baby because her water already broke and the baby is in much distress. But the hospital doesn't have an incubator, and without it, the baby will die."

Keep in mind that Shelove and his wife were chased from their home/workshop nearly a year ago where everything was left behind when gangs inundated the metal artist village. Then, after staying with various friends and family for months, they finally had another place to rest their heads, until two weeks ago when gangs entered their home at 5am. They have been fleeing danger for a long time now, not to mention juggling medical concerns.

After some back and forth conversation and recommendation of where to go for better and faster care, some time passed, and then .....

"I have a letter from my hospital saying we need a cesarean and then the baby needs an incubator. But we went there (to the hospital I had recommended), and they are closed. Now I'm told to go, and we are now on our way, to another hospital a 2+ hour drive into the mountains."

As Shelove and his wife search and search for a place to give birth to their tiny baby, I find it uncanny the similarities to a story we repeat of 2000 years ago when a couple was told time and time again that there was no room. (And perhaps, just a little extra "glow" to the Christ story lived out in present day - it is not lost on me that the original effort they made to care for the baby was at the 'Holy Spirit' Medical Complex).

I have no doubt that a modern day Joseph, fleeing with his pregnant wife, would pull out his cell phone and made contact to anyone who might be able to help find a place for his child to be born safely. I have no doubt that a modern day Joseph, scared within, would put on a brave front and take scary routes with his wife through gang infested areas with shootings on either side and threats on his life, on the back of a motorcycle and jalopy old truck over bumpy roads to try to find a safe place for his wife and unborn child. I have no doubt that a modern day Joseph is not experiencing a perfect white Christmas with lights and presents and flannel pajamas and hot chocolate with Christmas jazz music in the background. Rather, I'm convinced that the modern day Joseph is struggling and is crushed with injustice and insecurity not of his own fault. The fears of safety and security for his u***d partner who is pregnant without proper medical care are his upmost priority on this night.

I have no doubt that a plethora of modern day Josephs live among us. One of them lives in Haiti and goes by Shelove.

Please pray for this young couple with child who is scared and anxious, and exhausted from long travels on this Holy night.

This Travel Tuesday we give a shout out to Herbert and his Super Pig for this great snowy picture from Nikolassee Berlin, Germany!
