Introducing MBAKA SATITIK: Ritualization of From by Sebastianus Hartanto.

An exhibition honoring and combining two generational methods of memory-keeping; photography and batik, the Javanese wax-resist dye technique.

In John Hardy’s artist residency, Hartanto unveils this ritualization of the batik process as his sacred act of memorializing his ‘froms’. This practice he calls ’Mbaka Satitik’ —‘until/from one point to another’, as every dot (titik) of batik represents a point of time, moments within a memory, “a particle of my body, of my from.”

Mbaka Satitik includes four rites of passage where the transformation of the cloth symbolizes the body in metamorphosis: Nyuci (purification), Nyanting (mediation/contemplation), Nyelup (absorption), and Nglorod (sublimation).

Introducing WELCOME TO THE ROAD: An Exhibition by Metis.

Welcome to the Road is a culmination of Enggar Rhomadioni & Prae Pupityastaporn’s one-month residency in Bali at the Metis Art villa in Seminyak, created specifically for contemporary art painters.

"The Road" is one of the central themes of Rhomadioni’s surrealistic series that recounts his first journey to Bali ten years ago, where he encountered tragedy, misfortune and unexpected generosity. It is also a guiding motif of the exhibition where many roads of different travelers lead into the heart of Bali. The island – with its impressionist sunsets and moody night skies depicted by Pupityastaporn – inevitably transforms every wanderer.
