First Implementation-Based Public Policy School in Indonesia
The National Education Day, leaves us thinking, what is the importance of literature?
Jordy Satria Widodo, an alumnus of SGPP Indonesia of Batch V says, "Navigating the vast seas of literature is akin to embarking on an epic journey, much like the Odyssey!
As a Literature and Cultural Studies lecturer, my greatest adventure lies in guiding the predominantly Z-Generation students through the rich types of literary works. Introducing them to the depths of poetry, prose, film, and music is akin to navigating uncharted waters.
Why do we use figurative language?
Why not simply state the facts?
These are the questions that often arise as students grapple with the nuances of literary styles.
Yet, they soon discover that within the realms of imagination lies a treasure trove of understanding and insight waiting to be unearthed. It's not just about reading; it's about decoding the layers of meaning and exploring the boundless landscapes of creativity.
At SGPP Indonesia, I gained a deeper understanding of the intersection of creativity and policy-making.
Here, I learned that imagination and innovation are not just the tools of storytellers but also the foundation of effective governance. In a world constantly in flux, embracing our capacity for empathy and imagination becomes paramount, shaping the policymakers of tomorrow.
… got my beans in a coffee cup next to my seat, catch the view and another good book to read... 🎵🎶🎵
A piece of Hanson's Penny and Me goes better with World Book Day and leaves us thinking: If one person reads one book, how many leaders can we create?
This is a story from our alumnus of Batch III, Donny Meirantika, whose leadership is inspired by world luminaries and the books he reads.
Donny serves as Sr. Client Director, APAC & Country Manager for Indonesia in TIMWETECH (TWT), a Portuguese Digital Enabler HQ-based company. Dony also promotes education, sport, and gastronomy by establishing Yayasan Milenial Madura, Indonesia Equestrian & Wening Archery Foundation, and Sabor Nusantara—the only Indonesian restaurant in Madrid, Spain. He also serves as Vice Secretary General or Wakil Sekjen P2N - Perkumpulan Profesional & Pengusaha Nahdlatul Ulama as part of his activism.
"There are a lot of great people's leadership and legacies that I read from their biographies, and I found it interesting to read a book while on my business trip. From the book, we can learn about many leadership aspects in each era and every civilization and nation's rise and fall patterns. And it inspires me to be a leader and create more future leaders for Indonesia Emas 2045.
Learning some case studies and gaining valuable insights from interaction and networking among peers and distinguished lecturers at SGPP Indonesia have led me to where I am today, and it fuels me to forward what I have learned to others."
What makes International Women's Day and Indonesian Kartini Day correlated?
Feminist scholars believe that women's struggle should not be divided by geography as it will fail us to understand the whole 'herstory'. Women's struggles should be seen as women's agency to establish sustainable lead(her)ship.
This post covers a story of women's leadership in the sustainable economy, as represented by our alumna, who plays a role as a female leader in a sector she is passionate about.
On March 5th, 2024, our alumna of Batch VI, Thilma Komaling, who serves as the Indonesia Tuna Consortium Strategic Lead, was invited to voice her journey in Blue Economy in Washington, DC. The event was hosted by Counterpart International.
In that event, Thilma had a chance to share her journey in Blue Economy, ranging from issues on air pollution to marine and fisheries and her insights on industries, from sustainable tuna to policy change. She highlighted the urgency of working to preserve nature, believing in our mission, understanding the economic benefits of sustainability, and creating our support system.
Here is Thilma's journey in the blue economy movement:
"It all began with pioneering Jakarta's Car Free Day in 2006, and now, it is replicated in nearly 400 areas across Indonesia. So, what drove me? The idea was simple: I was tempted to think about my future children breathing unhealthy air. Then, it led me to advocate for air quality laws, a pivotal moment in my career. And now, I focus on sustainable tuna fisheries, which are vital to Indonesia's economy and global conservation efforts.
Recently, we accelerated the launch of the Tuna Harvest Strategy, ensuring sustainability for fishers and our oceans.
Women do great things when equipped with knowledge, drive, and passion, contributing to economic growth and societal well-being. Let's continue making a difference, both economically and socially."

On Sunday, April 21, 2024, Blue Ocean Global Network, in collaboration with School of Government and Public Policy-Indonesia and Sampoerna University, conducted a roundtable discussion on the Blue Ocean Fellowship Program.
The discussion highlighted ways to increase the availability of good jobs & how organizations could do more to reduce inflationary pressures, and also new ways that government and the private sector can cooperate to achieve good outcomes and deliver high value to the economy of Indonesia.
During the discussion, all participants showed their enthusiasm in sharing their experiences and challenges as employers and creators of high-quality jobs in the Indonesian economy amidst technology disruption and the rise of AI.
This event marked a task completion of HE Mr Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno as a Fellow and our CEO, Ony Avrianto Jamhari, as a co-chair of BSOF this year.
Who the new Fellow will be and what the activities will be, stay tuned for more information.
The first online LIVE discussion with Endgame Narrator.
Learn from Gita Syahrani, the #150 Endgame narrator who has recently received the Climate Breakthrough award for her idea on how nature can be the basis to create a new economic path for Indonesia through sustainable innovations. This idea is put into action through Koalisi Ekonomi Membumi, a collaborative effort rooted in the culture of gotong royong.

Prepare yourself and some questions in your pocket!
"Working in digital literacy, especially for women, youth, and children, I believe empowerment through education is the key to facing the challenges of the digital age."
Ida Ayu Prasasti, a School of Government and Public Policy alumna of Batch V, shares her idea about the importance of digital literacy based on her experience as a Program Director at ICT Watch Indonesia.
In Indonesia, what I see as the biggest challenge is the gap in access and understanding of technology, often felt by women and marginalized groups. We must ensure that all levels of society, especially women and children, have equal opportunities to learn and thrive in the digital world. It is all about providing access and equipping them with critical skills and an understanding of digital ethics so that they can be active participants. Guaranteeing their rights to feel safe and comfortable in the digital space, free from all forms of violence and crime, so that we are ready for the 'Indonesia Emas' by 2045. And I have to emphasize that digital talent is a critical factor.
At School of Government and Public Policy-Indonesia, I gained a deep understanding of how public policy plays a crucial role in realizing these ideals. Public policy is essential to respond to current challenges and prepare us for the future. For example, public policies designed to support the development of artificial intelligence (AI) with an inclusive and gender-sensitive approach can create wider opportunities, especially for Indonesian women, to actively participate in developing AI technologies. Policies designed with this diversity in mind are essential in encouraging women's participation and crucial in advancing our society, especially in digital technology. By doing so, we can ensure that technological progress is equitable, inclusive, and sustainable.
What goes better with the International Women's Day?
Take more women in the discussion and decision-making process, then give them a microphone to voice up.
We want to thank the participants of the Blue Ocean Strategy Fellowship/BOSF’s public lecture on SANDIAGA UNO ECONOMICS VISION FOR INDONESIA: JOB CREATION AND AFFORDABILITY FOR ALL who have attended our event.
Sincere thanks are also extended to Mr Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, the Minister of Kementerian Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif, and the BOSF team.
Keep an eye open for another BOSF Public Lecture again sometime this year!

Do you know that your peers can influence your academic achievement?
A study by Yuan Zhou et al. shows that the peers of college students who receive scholarships are likelier to receive scholarships—the finding indicates the number of peers positively correlates with the likelihood of receiving a scholarship.
Selecting your peers is crucial as it affects your psychology, attitude, and behaviour. Having good friends in your inner circle can provide social and emotional support, reduce loneliness, and help you adapt to academic life.
Also, with good friends, you can see whether you are progressing by comparing and competing with them.
So, have you got good friends to support your academic growth?
Inclusive education, how far have we progressed?
Naushad Forbes, on Endgame #106, proposed four questions on inclusiveness:
1. How do we invest in people so that they have the capabilities to participate in the modern economy in a much more effective way?
2. How do we ensure that our institutions are such that they provide widespread access to people and don't keep privileges with the privileged?
3. How do we ensure that our institutions are accessible to everyone?
4. And how do we balance sorts of incentives and freedom with safety nets so that people feel secure enough?
Those questions align with our commitments as a school that emphasizes the international ramifications of policies, strengthens students' analytical skills, provides training in the complex art of policy implementation, helps students excel as leaders, and fosters diversity.
Also, with our partial scholarship, we help lessen elitized education so that more people can attend higher education.
Having 13 batches so far, our school has created over 160 Masters of Public Policy, who have become the extension of our mission for social inclusion by being leaders in societies where they are and contributing to societies in ways they are passionate about.
May this become a growing vertical going forward, and our school be a good practice of inclusive education that we are all working on together.

Starting the year 2024, a new publication by SGPP Indonesia’s student of Batch VIII, Tarikem Saryam, comes to us to echo a lesser-discussed issue in the academic field, TERORISM.
In the paper titled “The Role of Civil Society Organizations in the Formulation of Presidential Regulation Number 7/2021 on Eradicating Extremism and Terrorism in Indonesia (Case of the Wahid Foundation, the C-SAVE, and the Inklusif Foundation) published in the PCD Journal Universitas Gajah Mada, Tarikem highlights how the three models of CSOs—The Wahid Foundation, the C-SAVE, and the Inklusif Foundation—partake in eradicating the violent extremism and terrorism in Indonesia.
Using Arnstein’s ladder participation as a conceptual framework, Tarikem shows that the three CSOs have contributed to the impetus behind the promulgation of the referred policy.
Congratulations to Tarikem Saryam. We applaud the publication of your outstanding academic paper.

Hi, all thesis makers. How are you doing today?
Look, you've almost reached the finish line! And all those tears, sweats, and sleepless nights will be paid off.
As you've been this far, let's take a step back to take a breath and ponder. Do you still remember the feeling when you were receiving the LOA? Can you bring back those good days studying at our green campus or even online during the pandemic? Can you frame the feelings of spending time with your classmates and lecturers on the wall?
To complete that contemplation, Loping, our student of Batch 12, will share his academic journey at SGPP Indonesia.
"I first knew SGPP Indonesia in 2016. Since that moment, I considered SGPP for my next academic milestone.
As someone with an International Relations Degree focusing on Multinational Corporations, I've seen that public policies often make businesses succeed or fail. I also notice that each policy can affect a nation's citizens positively or negatively.
Interestingly, each moment of the lecture has been special to me, with guaranteed outside textbook insights coming from each lecturer's experience as an expert in their respective fields. One of the most special lectures is the Public Policy Case Study: Healthcare by Pak Gita Wirjawan. The lecture left a mark on me, and I would like to take data-based articulation of thoughts as a habit after that lecture.
I think SGPP Indonesia has added another young man with big dreams. In the long run, I would like to contribute to making beneficial policies in Indonesia, especially in my hometown, Riau Islands."
That is a beautifully written experience by Loping. Loping serves as a National Key Account at Smartfren. He works with the Head Office Management to ensure high-quality telecommunication advocacy in every nationwide region.
Wish all your worries vanished under the vast blue sky.
Have a lovely Monday, folks.

Vandana Shiva, an ecofeminist, argues that nature shrinks as capital grows. The growth of the market cannot solve the very crisis it creates.
For that reason, we include 'Social, Technological Innovation, and Environmental Sustainability' as one of our courses. The course is taught by Ibu Ani Adiwinata.
Have an amazeballs Monday everyone 🌼

Where do we start creating a global village?
Alex Omari, an SGPP Indonesia alumnus who serves as Country Engagement Lead for Eastern Africa at FP2030, shares his story as the first-ever African graduating from SGPP Indonesia.
Joining SGPP was a no-brainer. I think SGPP created options and alternatives for students who wanted to further their studies during the COVID-19 pandemic by offering virtual option classes. SGPP focuses on re-inventing the study of public policy beyond Indonesia and as the main block with support from other pillars such as Health, Economics, Governance etc. As a health professional, my area of focus was health policy, and I was interested in understanding how, for example, the reproductive and maternal health policies compare for the Kenya and Indonesia scenarios.
So, to me, studying at SGPP was a blessing, more so contributing to the Strategic Review-Journal as a writer and website contributor on public health and health policy matters. The technical guidance and knowledge I garnered at SGPP were immense. I utilize this in my current work, engaging high-level health policymakers in the East and Southern Africa region in 23 countries. Understanding the basic foundation of Public Policy is essential; I am a living example, and I say that ''Studying remotely can indeed be rewarding and impactful."
With my proven experience and desire to work with and around policymakers in the health sector, my endgame entails lending a voice, pushing, and advocating for better global health policies to attain sustainable and equitable development for ALL.
SGPP Indonesia is now a household name in Kenya and Africa. Before my studies, I doubted whether people knew about SGPP Indonesia from the African continent. I am extremely humbled and honored to be the first-ever African graduate from SGPP Indonesia and the first-ever alumni from this world. The world is indeed a global village that needs to be connected.
Putting on an event requires a lot of work, but it’s so worth it.

Our two students, Sisi and Tita, are now joining a two-day workshop on the Blue Ocean Strategy Fellowship in Singapore. This workshop aims to support the team of our incoming Distinguished Fellow, Dr. Sandiaga Uno, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, in problem identification of public policy issues of significance, formulate a solution framework and implementation strategy and provide storytelling approaches so as to deliver a series of public lectures between October 2023 - April 2024 headlined by Mr. Sandiaga Uno.
Does life get content and fun after graduation?
Our alums, Pratiwi Maharni and Isyfi Afiani, share their fabulous friendship story:
Isyfi and I were commenced in 2018. Since then, our lives have changed, but our relationship remains the same.
I have known Isyfi since the beginning of our class in Batch 3, and we maintain this friendship until this very day. Our friendship is not perfect. Yet, it's challenged with lots of ups and downs. We argue, agree, laugh, cry, travel, and make time together. But most importantly, we share the same dreams and visions.
One of the dreams that we can share is that we want to pursue a PhD in the near future.
I am going to pursue a PhD in Public Administration because it focuses on government and governance, which aligns with my professional work as a policy analyst at the Ministry of Trade. Also, this program allows me to develop my knowledge and skills in leadership and public speaking. Who knows if I can be the next Gita Wirjawan 😉
Meanwhile, Isyfi is going to pursue a PhD in Education and Society. With this program, she expects she can deep-dive the role of female leadership in improving the PISA scores through literacies. Her background as an English teacher at Lembaga Bahasa Internasional, FIB, Universitas Indonesia and a translator for the Endgame with Gita Wirjawan podcast will surely help her work on this issue.
That's the life after SGPP that we can share here. Wish us the best of luck!
Today, we are proud to recognize Hot Maringan Samosir, SGPP Indonesia student, Batch XI.
Hot Maringan Samosir has just received Satyalancana Karya Satya (Civil Servants' Long Service Medal) after serving as a civil servant in the Government of Binjai City for ten years.
His current position is the Head of Section of Finance and Program. In that position, he is in charge of preparing a strategic plan as a guideline for work programs and budgets for 5 (five) years.
SGPP Indonesia takes immense pride in our alumni and students' achievements and constantly encourages them to achieve new heights in academics and careers.

Can Indonesia be the next leading country?
Last Saturday, Ibu Gracia Paramitha, Ph.D delivered a lecture on Indonesia and Its Interconnected World with a topic on hemisphere division (East and West)—historically established as the impact of the invention of the 0-degree longitudinal concept in Greenwich, London—and its relevance with today’s issues.
According to her, Indonesia’s attractiveness can make it the most beautiful flower among the blooms. To support this idea, she illustrated Indonesia’s attraction using two different cases: the Bandung Principle – Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the BRICS membership offer.
During the session, she encouraged the students to be very involved with the topic by dividing them into work groups to work on relevant case studies. Excitingly, each student group showed their enthusiasm for solving their cases. As a reward, she sang the SDGs song at the end of the session.
Apparently, a good song can go together with a heavy-duty lecture like this mandatory course at SGPP Indonesia 😉

Just four days prior to the airing of this episode, Taiwan's former president, Ma Ying-jeou, made a historic visit to China amid rising tensions between the two countries.
In his speech, he stated that "We are all Chinese," making this the first major political action of its kind since 1949.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Taiwan's current president, , embarked on a diplomatic journey to the US and Central America over the following two days.
This highlights the dynamic nature of the issue.
Speaking in her civilian capacity, Oriana Skylar Mastro, a Chinese military expert and strategic planner at the United States Air Force's INDOPACOM, helps us to get into the minds of the Chinese military in seeing what she describes as “the most important issue to the Communist Party.”
She also expresses her frustration towards leaders across the globe for failing to take significant measures to deter a potential Taiwan war.
She boldly predicts that the flashpoint is likely to occur in 2027.
