The Philodendron verrucosum is a striking plant, known for its velvety, dark-green leaves with bright, light green veining once they reach maturity.

Even the underside of their leaves, coloured a faded burgundy in between the veins, showcase its adaptability to its native tropical environments.

Unlike many of its Philodendron cousins, this plant is hemiepiphytic, meaning that though they start their lives as epiphytes, clinging to trees, they eventually root themselves in the ground like most other plants.

Philodendron Paraiso Verde should be watered regularly in the summer months, approximately weekly, and in winter half as often, this also applies to fertilising. The plant should be re-potted yearly in spring into a generous, yet not oversized pot, to allow the root base to develop through the growing season.

Burle Marx philodendron is a low-growing shrub or vine that has shiny bright green heart-shaped leaves and reddish stems. It grows in clumps about two feet tall and two to three feet wide and prefers partial sun and moderate soil moisture.

The philodendron is a plant native to the tropical jungles of Brazil where it forms large clumps that can eventually climb nearby trees and structures. This philodendron is named for the eminent Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx who championed the use of native plants in modern landscape design. Philodendrons are not hardy in Chicago but are easily overwintered as they make excellent houseplants.
