For the closing of our Cooking Science theme, the students at Begawan Learning Centre opened their own restaurant for the day. The menu? Chicken kebab bites, basil roasted rice, and klepon pudding. The children took orders, cooked the food, bussed tables, and collected the earnings, all on their own. Well done! 👏🏼

Did you know we mill our Mansur Heritage Rice to order? 🍚 The day before making a delivery, Begawan’s farm team will mill the rice in our own facility, to ensure we keep our entire process chemical-free. After milling, the rice is best enjoyed within two months.

Hands-on, experiential learning is at the heart of our progressive education program at Begawan. Our students recently took a field trip to Uyah Kusamba Organic Salt, where they learned all about traditional salt-making practices. 🧂

For the last three months our students have been studying Cooking Science, one of 12 thematic programs we teach at Begawan Learning Centre. 🥘 In one session, the children cooked traditional Balinese dishes outdoors, such as lawar, tum ayam, and sambal embe. Afterwards, they ate together as a group, a local tradition called 'Megibung'.

Spotted: This handsome Bali Starling, looking confident and camera-ready! 📸 After being released from our breeding centre two years ago, this male bird has become completely resilient and independent in the wild. Small successes like these are the result of the combined efforts of our hardworking bird-keeping team, who are preparing to release more Bali Starlings into the wild in the coming weeks.

When you can’t wait to meet a new friend. 🐦 This free-flying Bali Starling comes regularly to our habituation enclosure in Bayad Village, where we’ve been preparing a pair of Starlings for release for two weeks now. He seems to be telling the birds in the enclosure excitedly all about their new home. Stay tuned for this upcoming release on our farm!

We’re so pleased to welcome these two Forsten’s Lorikeets to our breeding centre. 🐣 Forsten’s Lorikeets are endemic to Indonesia, and are an endangered species. These two hatched in our enclosure a few weeks ago. Our team is helping to raise these beautiful birds, and it’s a delight to watch them growing strong and exploring the world.

Our students at the Begawan Guru Learning Centre wait eagerly for each performance day. 🪭 During the close of our recent holiday program, these young ladies performed a Bali Starling dance. Teaching through movement and activities gives the students a way to participate in conservation awareness and connects them more closely to the story of these critically endangered birds.

For the longest time Begawan Foundation was all about nature conservation and progressive education for the local community in Payangan, Bali. Then in 2022 we added regenerative farming to our roster of initiatives. 🪺

Next month, a new chapter begins as we launch Begawan Biji, a farm-to-table restaurant that will bring all our programs together and expand our message and mission to a wider audience than ever before.

Heads up, parents: Begawan Guru Learning Centre is hosting its first educational camp this September in collaboration with John Tan. ☀️

Children can look forward to five full days of themed, integrative learning on Begawan’s regenerative farm, with topics ranging from farming to nature conservation to Balinese culture; while parents can look forward to enjoying Ubud in the daytime and exploring with the whole family in the evenings.

Profits from the camp will be reinvested into the Begawan Guru Learning Centre to give a quality progressive education to children from rural villages.
