Toko Gunung Agung is one of Indonesia’s leading bookstore companies. A pioneer in the intellectual development of a nation. HEAD OFFICE :
Jl. Moh. KH.
The origin of Gunung Agung bookstore dates back to the early 1950’s when the late Tjio Wie Tay (1927 - 1990), who later became popularly known as Haji Masagung, started a humble kiosk selling books, newspaper and magazines under the partnership name Thay San Kongsie in Central Jakarta. As the business grew bigger and more complex in the early post-independence years, Haji Masagung established a ne
w company that published and imported books, named Firma Gunung Agung. The company continued to grow with the support of poets, writers, scholars and journalists. Amidst all the dificulties faced by a very young Indonesia, Haji Masagung pioneered the effort to open the eyes of the nation through books. He organized Indonesia’s first book fair in 1954 which was highly applauded by the Indonesian public. In the ensuing years, Haji Masagung steadily elevated the company to new heights in both standards and quality and made the company into one of Indonesia’s leading household names. In 1990, the company changed name to Toko Gunung Agung as it is known today. After Haji Masagung passed away in the same year, his spirit and commitment to expand the bookstores were carried on by his sons who successfully floated the company on the Jakarta Stock Exchange in December 1991. With the ever increasing affluence of our society, we are also progressively increasing our book titles to include a larger selection of English and other foreign language books and magazines. Toko Gunung Agung stores offer a complete range of stationery goods aimed solely at satisfying the costumers’ needs for their intellectual lifestyle, no matter who they are. Comprising both local as well as imported items, a broad range of stationeries for the individual as well as for office needs are on offer. Departing from the more traditional bookstore and stationery concept and in line with the greater basic needs of this immensely populous nation, the stores expanded their non-book product lines.
